    Wip

I'm going for a moth/gentleman-esque type courtier. A little bit dark, a little bit creepy. A little pretty. Not sure if I'll be able to finish this one (the deadline is on Sunday??) but I think this leaves some room for an epic queen design.

here's a bit more progress, not as much as I'd hoped though...

i wanted to set mine around mystical Indians. this guy is supposed to be the guard who everyone needs to speak to in order to meet with the Ruler. he's patient, forgiving and wise. but if he's messed around with he'll kick some ass with his magic cane.

Bit of an update, need to start building the background in now to that the pose makes a bit more sense. Need to replace the trumpet too, I would add it in and finish it, but I suspect I wont have time to be sitting polishing just a single complicated prop

awesome characters so far, cheers everyone!

an update (text from the first post - "Queen, beautiful as she is, requests from courtier to wear these. So she always felt desirable, sexually attractive.")

changed his pose and gave him a bottle of wine. also in his right hand he has handcuffs

will pull out more details and finish it by tomorrow.

Here's hoping I finish on time!

I suppose no matter what I'm drawing, there will always be some sort of question in my mind about it. A work of art (even cartoon art) is never really finished; it is abandoned.

Update. So many great entries so far, everyone has such an interesting take on the brief. I wanted to make the mechanics more clockworky for mine, but time is running out. Time to go with what I got and burn the midnight oil.

EDIT) Sketch almost finished, almost time for some colour.

For some reason I can't see all the pictures I hope this loads up.

My update, changed my mind back to the first sketch (thanks for feedback ArtbyManon!) and the hip hop version wasn't working out. Anyway here's the overdressed gossip of the court, always there to hear what's going on and passing it on

    EDIT: update

Really impressed with some of the designs so far. Bendragon, Pinback and Megadubitably especially - great work. Looking forward to seeing the finals.

Had very little time on this so far and not sure if I'll get it finished but here's how she's looking. Going for a corrupt (dagger/hand behind back, bags of bribes around her waist etc.), right-hand advisor to a queen in a sci-fi meets Japanese/European medieval setting. Really trying to make her give an uncomfortable impression while retaining that regal/noble quality and making her quite difficult to read outright. Any feedback would massively appreciated - I'll try and get round to doing some crits later tonight when I get home - cheers!

Wow... there's some great stuff going on here

Last update before final render, adjusted some stuff and added a big-ass sword.

Couple of WIPs, such as they are... (thought I'd better post something before I go back to hitting refresh on the TAD thread...)

EDIT: Added a third WIP, not much, just noodled around with some details during the TAD workshop thingy...

A few crits - sorry for anyone I've left out. As ever, feel free to ignore.

Suneater: Nice armour and weapon. I also like the actual character species you've come up with. Some crits though - his right hand (viewer left) is looking a little awkward and for a walking pose one of his arms should be placed further back - it's a bit unbalanced atm. Maybe have his sword arm swinging backwards? Also, as far as rendering goes, the lighting seems inconsistant and the shadows are very vague in places. Another grumble is that I'm not sure how well it ties in with the brief. I'm sure it's plausable to have a soldier who is also a member of a king/queen's court, but the design says to me that he's ready for battle rather than taking part in debates or social interaction. Sorry for moaning, I really like the design in general and the colours, just those few things that stick out.

Oren90: Looks like it's still early days but I like the idea. I know he's not human but the open hand is looking a bit odd. You could maybe reference human hands but make the fingers longer/more twig-like.

Athemis IX: Really nice design. The only thing I can moan about is that she's maybe a little too symmetrical. Maybe giving her a different accessory on one arm or something could help.

Monkeysills: I know it's early days, but a couple of things - her face is a little off, perspective-wise, and apart from the wings outline I'd never have guessed she was a fairy. Some accessories or a glow maybe?

Ivan Turcin: Nice (but scary!) take on the character. My only gripe really is that some of the areas aren't properly defined (e.g. the cuff and the hand holding the bottle) but I'm guessing they're on the to-do list. Looking forward to the final.

Pinback: Very early, I know, but a couple of bits look off anatomy-wise (like the legs and arms). Also, some of the details are quite hard to make out at this point, and there's maybe a bit too much going on in some places. I really love the general design though, keep it up!

Designfox: Nicely done. Good sense of time-period and that he's in with the nobility. A few crits... not sure why he has a sword (and possibly armour). Like with Suneater's character, the sword is giving the wrong impression for this brief, at least to me. His right arm (viewer left) seems to just be hanging awkwardly. If it was brought into his body and formed into a fist then it could work, but it just seems to be a bit of an unlikely position at the minute, One last thing, which probably isn't a real issue but it's bugging me - the thing on his pec armour. I'm not sure what this is meant to be but it's reading as a modern police badge to me at the moment.

JanJager: Nicely done. Even the bordering shape gives the sense of era.

Asterisks: Some proportion/anatomy issues and if you squint it's very hard to see the character at all against that background.

Dumpling: I like the native american idea and the stylised look.

Bendragon: Love it! The design, lighting and gesture are spot-on. Very reminiscent of a Bioshock splicer. Gets my vote so far, really hope you finish!

HellHullandHalifax: Very nice design. Just a couple of minor niggles - his jaw below his right (viewer left) ear seems to be sticking out a little too far, and also his left (viewer right) shoulder is pulling the focus with that high contrast/brightness.

I guess this is my final, I'm quite happy with how he turned out.
    C&C would be much appreciated.

edit: thanks for the heads-up, Veshkau, I'll let the piece sit overnight and adress the shading and the wonky hand in the morning. As for your other points, you're probably right that it doesn't quite fit with the brief. Even so, I had bits and pieces of this character whorling around in my head for quite some time, and this Chow gave me the reason to work something out, so even if I don't make the selection, I'm just happy I got to finish.

In the meantime, I cooked up some background (warning, lots of words)

    Name: Ruivkar Valainen
    Race: Raam
    Gender: Male
    Age: 56
    Height: 7’ 2”
    Weight: 390 lbs.

Few members of the Divine Queen Belazekalah’s court are as intimidating, or dangerous, as the mighty Raam, Ruivkar Valainen. The Illuminator-General of the Orders of Truth, Ruivkar is wholly dedicated to the Queen, and any who dare blaspheme or question her under his vigilant gaze are in great peril indeed. It is rumoured that Ruivkar can smell a heresy brewing from miles away, and it is the greatest fear of many simple townsfolk that he will come and put them all to the torch. At court, however, rumours are mostly confined to how the Queen acquired such a subordinate; it is well-known that the fierce Raam people abhor Belazekalah and everything she represents, yet her highest officer is one. The Queen has never revealed anything. As for asking Ruivkar himself, that’s a good way to meet a sticky and untimely end at the tip of his massive blade.
However, as any Raam can tell you, the reality is simple, and a little sad. The story would have it that Ruivkar was once a mighty Raam warlord and sorcerer. When his pride lands were invaded by superior forces, he refused to admit defeat, and though he sent his pride away to the great city of Carnaea, he himself stayed and fought. Hundreds of the fell Queen’s soldiers did he slay before the creature Herself made an appearance. The ensuing sorcerous battle is said to have shook the very ground, but after three days and three nights, the accursed Queen brought low mighty Ruivkar. What vile magic She used to convert the warlord to her cause none can say, but ever since Ruivkar serves as the highest military advisor in Her employ, and as an example set to the Raam by the Queen: I can break your kind, and eventually, I will…

Veshkau ~thank you for constructive critique and your time! much appreciated. I'm still working on his hands, and have a lot of problems.
This is my first Chow, and it seems this is the best place to push yourself as an artist and grow.
Same as you, I'm looking forward for your final.
