    Timaz's Sketchbook

    Hey, I'm Thomas, and I'm Dutch. Born on 24/10/1994.
    If you have clicked on this sketchbook, PLEASE give me critiques, because I need them.
    Anyhow, about me.
    My hobbies include drawing, (thai)boxing, bodybuilding. I'm not good at any of those, but I'm trying to improve on all of them.
    I don't know yet if I would ever want to do something with drawing - however, my study right now allows me to able to become virtually anything, so I can always fall back on something if drawing doesn't work out.

    Okay, so I managed to still crank this out.
    Should have lightly shaded the left side of his head.
    Scanner doesn't scan as light as I thought after all, but most contrast was lost.

    Hey there, why don't you just adjust the contrast and brightness after scanning, in your graphic program?
    Quite a neat sketch to start a sketchbook, waiting for more (:

    I can't upload anything today, because my scanner doesn't want to scan the whole picture. It's got nothing to do with size settings, because I'm using the same settings as the first picture. The scan preview is also fine, it's just the final scan that sucks. Any help is greatly appreciated. (It's a P713w, FYI)

    Scanned these (from yesterday) directly to my USB-stick.
    Hate the female drawings, they look too bulky, and their legs are not long enough.

    Took a while since my last upload! Luckily we have vacation right now (and homework). Have been doing Posemaniacs recently, and planning on continuing with them. I don't think those sketches are something I should upload: I think that's more practice-work.
    Some House sketches (I downloaded the newest episodes, and stopped them at times when I saw an interesting pose; can you guess which people I drew?).
    Some Bridgman sketches, too, but the pictures in the book are very grainy at times.

    Studies from George Bridgman's "The Human Machine". I am going to buy the book, along with two others from Bridgman.
    EDIT: I know one drawing is in it twice, I'm just too damn tired to fix that right now.

    I'm back, after a LONG time-off.
    Was busy with school, thaiboxing, working out, etc. etc. you know the excuses. Want to get back into it.

    You're doing the right kind of work, just do more! I think it's clear from these that you're focusing on the construction - I like how you've built up the head sketches from House and the Bridgman sketches look good too. By the way, if you didn't buy those books yet, you might want to consider Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life instead. It includes The Human Machine and five other books. Keep it up!

    Was on camp, so that's why there were no uploads in a while.
    I made a promise to myself that if I want to get good at drawing, I will have to draw (at least) 2 hours a day. 1 hour will be spent drawing from Mr. Bridgman's books, the other hour will be more free drawing. In that hour I also try to draw lots of stick figures as described in Mr. Loomis's book.

    Can anyone tell me if this is the way I should work from Bridgman's book? Cause most of this is just copying. What I'm trying to focus on is also to get my pen strokes light.

    1 hour of bridgman, 1 hour of doing lots of andrew loomis stick figures, using pictures from a reference book. The last hour is not upload, because it has been done on copy paper. I have also tried to focus more on my lines, to get them more fluid, and in one stroke.

    Vacation drawings

    Drawings on vacation. Sorry, they're very light, as I can't be assed to make them darker in Photoshop.
    These are not all at all. But, I had uploaded the first 35, and then they were suddenly gone. So now I'm going to upload 10 at a time, per day.

    Again gonna post in batches. Mostly studies again, so boring to look at, But I'm trying to push myself to make something from my imagination.
    I also have set some goals in a notebook where I also keep my weightlifting log, on the other end of the book.
    They are:
    -Scan every Sunday.
    -ASAD (A Sketch/drawing (as long as it's from my head, with maybe a little reference) A Day)
    -Reviewing every month what I drew, and see (hopefully ) progress
    -Upload every day ( a min of 1 drawing, and a max of 5 drawings, this way I'll have a bigger chance of people critiquing me)
    -Every day, write a log of some sort, with ideas for drawings, things I discovered, how other people progressed, etc. etc.

    Studies, bridgman. I forgot to tell that I tried a different way of doing studies - first off, you copy the drawing, then you close the book, and try drawing it again. It works wonders, but it's really boring. I now know pretty much every muscle bridgman shows in the arm.
    Right now drawing some different body types - bodybuilders, sprinters, marathon runners, etc. etc.

    Screw the 3-drawing limit, I will just use that as an excuse not to draw.
    Took me some time to completely understand the way of drawing hands as Bridgman shows it.

    I injured my ankle, so I have trouble walking to the scanner, so I can't post for a few days. Sorry.
    EDIT: Ima scan! Two of the drawings feature my injured ankle, and yes, it's drawn correctly, it's really that swollen.
    EDIT: Forgot to turn them around. Also, I don't think I'm gonna upload much studies anymore - I will do them, but I don't see the use of uploading them.

    Wasn't very productive, and that I regret. I am going to try to be as productive as possible during school, but that's going to be very hard. Very hard does NOT mean doing nothing at all, it means that I will have to become more efficient at understanding school work, and that I have to be very intense in my workouts (and drawing time).

    It's good to see another fellow dutch artist here =D
    There is a couple of things I think you can do to improve your skills and quality of drawing. First off (and I dont know whether or not you are doing this already but it looks like you aren't) working with pencils it's always good to have a couple of different ones around - I can recommend working with a 2B and 6B pencil - this to create thick dark shadows to contrast the somewhat lighter pencil work you've been doing so far.

    Another thing is that I see in your works that you do a lot of anatomy studies but when you are drawing from life (especially the foot on the couch) I can see that your perspective is a bit lacking. Being able to paint characters is just as important as the ability of placing them. I suggest starting to make simple studies of your room or house =) Hope that helped a bit!

    Great job sticking to the studies! I don't know if you're drawing from mind more than you're showing but I think it's good to do that to reinforce what you've learned. Like when you've drawn the muscles on the arm, draw a page of arms in invented poses. Your figures from mind could benefit from using the two boxes Bridgman teaches. I can see you've used a Loomis mannequin but the figures on your second last post seem to lack some sense of bulk on the hips that I think the boxes would've given. It also seems like you've rounded up the anatomy a lot. I think you'd make the most of what you've studied by trying to stick to Bridgman's structural approach because by rounding the limbs up they easily come out looking formless. And another thing you could try is copy some figures from photos and see if you remember the muscles from the muscle charts.

    Not all I drew, I also drew a sketch in the metro, and did some anatomy studies in the metro (mainly legs).
