    Volcano eruption on Iceland

This thing has grounded flights all over the place, and its apparently raining ashes in iceland..

And of course, lady luck being the bitch that she is, I have a friend visiting from the states next week, making a stop on iceland no less.. I hope the airspace has been opened up by then..

    Anyone else affected by this?

The way news are presenting it here makes it sound like Icelanders are loling because the wind blows it south-east on the rest of Europe while they're not getting much of it. I have some relatives who live around 150km north (birdflight) of the thing and they're also like, "Wut volcano, sky's r blue here."

I just received an email from my brother who is stranded in London on account of the volcano.

He says the news reports are of a million travelers stranded, but wonders who counted them.

The truth will set you free,
but first it's gonna piss you off!

Yeah, really sorry about that guys...:/

I'm actually staying in south Germany, so I'm not experiencing this first-hand. But before the second big eruption, I knew of quite a lot who took a hike to see the volcano, including my brother. I wish I could've, must've been awesome to see. And paint

I still hope the wind direction will change, so that flights can start again. I got stuck in Heathrow myself last January on my way to Germany during that big freeze for over 24 hours, so I get how frustrating that is. But there's not a lot one can do when it comes to Mother Nature.

Here's just hoping that this won't make Katla erupt. Then first we can start worrying, is what I hear from the geologists.

Well i have a sister who was supposed to fly to Cambodja over Thailand tonight, and that got royally nixed. So i can see how this can come over as a royal pain to people with travel plans.

Yeah, Katla is a mean biatch. According to geophysicists, what is happening now is barely 1/10th of what could happen if she'd decide to erupt.

We're just hoping that the wind doesn't change. because then we'll get all the ash fall etc over us in no time (I'm located in the southwest corner of Iceland).

Had some really odd skies over here yesterday, no doubt today and tomorrow will be the same. Big red sunsets, and because of the airtraffic ban there's not a single white stripe in the sky, very very strange to have a pure sky somehow.

Fingers crossed nothing really big is going to blow up next. People stuck for traffic is a bad thing, but that's nature sometimes. Things blowing up and killing, now that would be worse.

Yeah, this could get really interesting yet. All flights to Europe from here in New Zealand have been cancelled until further notice. There are even travel warnings out saying not to attempt to go half way (asia or the us) as accommodation is full.

Love the look of this particular eruption though. Spectacular!

Blah, this sucks so much. I have been apart from my boyfriend for over two months and was finally going to see him again today, now I don't know if it'll be weeks or months further ahead in time. Of course I get that it's for safety reasons, and as I'm hysterically scared of flying I really appreciate that - BUT it doesn't mean it doesn't feel crappy as hell.

It must be really bad for the people of iceland that will have to deal with the health issues of this too, I really feel for everyone affected by this, be it health issues or people separated from their families. People who complain about missing a football game should think twice before going berserk about this though...

    From the Beeb

Volcanologist Thor Thordarsson said if the volcano maintained its current phase of activity, then the eruption could be over in "a few hours or even a few days" meaning the atmosphere would clear shortly afterwards.

But he added: "If the eruption has a phase change and starts to produce lava... then we might be in for a much longer haul, an eruption that might last for months or even years, with a quiet period in between intermittent explosions."
Could be interesting as 3 people (10%) of my office is affected.

Look on the bright side, everybody. With all the foreign travelers trapped in the US and unable to return home, I feel fairly certain the average IQ of this country has gone up at least 40 points. Not a bad thing, even if it is temporary...

Yeah, it really is a huge problem for those planning on leaving. My boyfriend should have left for Austria earlier today, but because of flight cancelations has lost several thousand dollars for a trip he's not going on. There's an estimated 6 million people stranded in airports in Europe right now.

OK so he's saying that the volcano erupted because the Health Care Reform bill passing here in the US and it's supposed to be some kind of punishment ? .. No I think actually Rush IS the Volcano and America's being punished by the obnoxiousness that erupts from his mouth.

Anyway hope no one minds. Here's some random news footage.

PS: It translates into something like this:

Put 30 billion euro in the trashbin at the Icelandic embassy tonight, and we'll turn off the volcano.

    DON'T call the police!

Oh my god those pictures are amazing. What causes the lightning during the eruption? It looks incredible, like some sort of nature event in science fiction. It's red in some of those pictures, making it extra awesome.
