ROUND #196 :: The Wizard of Oz
    DESCRIPTION

"The Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum, 1900

Dorothy is a girl who lives in a farmhouse in Kansas with her Uncle Henry, Aunt Em, and little dog Toto. One day the farmhouse, with Dorothy inside, is caught up in a cyclone and deposited in a field in the Land of the Munchkins in the Land of Oz. The falling house kills the ruler of the Munchkins, the Wicked Witch of the East and Dorothy sets off on an epic journey along the yellow brick road to find the Great Wizard Oz who can send her back home. Along the way, she meets a Cowardly Lion, a Tin Woodsman, and a Scarecrow who become her traveling companions.

Pick any one, two, three or all four of the main characters - Dorothy, the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow or the Cowardly Lion - to (re)design. Give it your own spin if you want - you can set it in the 1930s midwest like the movie, the original Victorian context in which it was written, or any other time or genre, just make sure the essence of the characters and the story is still captured in your design.

Victorian style after Gabriel Rossetti. I wanted to imagine how he would have (perhaps!) painted the characters. His women are very recognizable so this is why I chose him instead of someone like say J W Waterhouse (who's work is gorgeous too, but there are other artists of his time who painted similar girls). I picked 'the daydream' to pose the girl and chose silver slippers instead of the hollywood red as I thought it would be more fitting with a Victorian feel.
I also found a rather fantastic image of an old victorian pewter watering can which I used for the head of the tin man.

Dorothy: A barmaid at a Strip Club turned Mother of Misfits, Dorothy has to keep a steady eye on her companions to prevent them from doing something stupid...or dangerous.
The Lion: A scout for his tribe, good at hiding and crouching...perhaps too good, because he's lost them.
The Tinman: Without a heart,he's not one for sweet talking or big thinking...his is the way of pain. Only for others,of course.
The Scarecrow: His brains may be missing, but the instinct's there. If there's danger,he'll sense it.

My first CHOW! I am a bit nervous about it as I'm not sure I qualify for it yet but I liked the subject so much and I figured I should have a try.
I picked the Scarecrow and I was thinking to go on either a goofy look or more into "I'm sad, I don't have a brain" feeling, I decided for the last.

I hope I got everything right, as I read the rules and all at least 5 times before posting .

    Dorothy in Oz

I loved this round. It came at just the right time. I did it and finished. Glad I didn't go with my first idea and I did the unthinkable. I coloured/ rendered without complaining. Looking forward to seeing the final results. It's amazing seeing everyone's unique perspectives on this.

Oh yeah and thank you guys for CHOW. I know I don't always post but I do lurk and it's very inspiring. Yes it blows my tiny mind sometimes but I do live through it.

Trying a more cartoony, simple style. I like the grimdark elements in the Tinman's backstory, but I wanted to get a kid-friendly look in as well - hence the adorable, romantic Cyborg Woodsman was born

Hokay well didnt finish the others but this is what i got of the cowardly lion.I know im a horrible i live in kansas and didnt finish all of them

scared ex-soldier in the military deserted them cause was to scared to fight and die, was pronounced dead and has hid in the shadowy forest ever since, every sound or approaching person makes him nervous and worried he will be discovered, hopes to get courage from the wizard so he can return to his tribe and finally become the man they want him to be.

Hopefully photobucket is okay for uploading... the direct links should be to larger versions of the WIPs. There were a few more things I wanted to edit (got great feedback from here~) but time didn't allow it. :c

Overall I'm happy, and I think this was great practice. As for the story behind the picture... here the Cowardly Lion is having to live up to his kingly duties to protect his kingdom from invaders, but would rather be enjoying himself and picking pansies to put in his mane. He can use a shield because he's awesome like that. :B
