Benedikt, why ditch the gate? It had a cool design (peaks echoing the towers of the city etc) and I thought it nicely balanced the whole comp. Plus one could guess the topic without knowing it with the first version, not so much over the updates...

And while I'm posting, here's a 3D model I half assed for mine.

vibhas_virwani: Hey, nice start. I was intrigued by the unusual technique you applied. It looks very much like something from a TRON movie. Very digital and futuristic. With a touch of retro :p Good stuff!

Bendedikt: That is cool, solid entry. You'll be up there in the race! I do like the cool gate of your first picture the best though. What made you get rid of it?

Benedickt - Oh that is so beautiful! I love the detail. It's also well out of reach for people who can't fly Nice work!

I haven't even started yet! Need to get a move on!

    love it Benedikt

artozi checked out your skbook amazing.

Kan Muftić each one of them could be a winner. Thats what i need to learn tumbnails.

Hideyoshi. Ok i am a bit drunk and i shuld not be posting but damn i hate the way you make it look so easy and quick. always loved your stuff and would love to pick your brains on how you do it.

This is what i have so far.

This took ages and i have still no idea what i am doing.

I am one of these people that only learn from mistake. And i have to do same mistake 20 times before i cop it. Annoying.

Kan - Def the 1st one is my fave.

    Here's mine so far .

I started on a underground version as well, which I like better, but unsure.

heres some more progress , i think i might actually finish a piece for EOW this time !! some feedback will really help

@reymus: i think your piece is coming along really nicely . but is the perspective of the "walk" or "bridge" in front , correct ?? i just thought that it was the only thing which looked off to me so far so i did a little paint-over (i really hope you dont mind) only trying to help

@mitze : looks like a good start , ill be looking forward to ur piece developing
@Kan Muftić : my favorites are the top and bottom left ones
@dragon4lunch : thanks for the encouragement

I always think I'm painting something decent and then I come here and see how wrong I was. Amazing entries...

Artozi - I remember you from Deviantart a couple of years back, you were good then but damn, you've improved like crazy!

Benedikt - What a great atmosphere!

Mitze - Wow, your gate makes me feel very small. Very dynamic and looks exactly like a Mages' Guild gate.

Smuli - Great! You could add some stalls and more pedestrians or a crowd watching that argument to add to the feel of a city.

Vibhas - Thank you for the correction .

    Disappointed but trodding along..

    @ Reymus
Nice. Looking good with the grand landscape in the background. Maybe dampen the details on the left side of the cliff edge. I think it takes some attention from the delicate gate.
    @ smuli
I like the snake ornament. Nice design and holds a god focus in the picture. Nice to have something happening between the figures in front of the gate.
I think it will bee very nice I you render out the buildings. Bee careful to have the shadows corresponding to the hight of the buildings and figures.
    @ xbert
    Good start
    @ vibhas_virwani
    Great landscape. Magic colours.
    @ Mitze
Nice perspective and colours. Grandiose gate. Could be nice to have some persons in there.
    @ Kan Muftic
Great thumbnails Nr.5 my favourite. The firs wip is grate to.
    @ SouMeng
Good start. Interesting design. I like the desert colours.
    @ Benedikt
    Fantastic. Great rendering.
    @ Vyse
    Great.
    @ artozi
Both designs absolutely grate. Wonderful style.
    @ oren90
    Interesting design on the gate.
    @ TSonline
    Good start.
    @ Nightblue
    Nr 5. is my favourite.
    @ Hideyoshi
    Grate. Looks very majestic.
    @ PMaz
Nice. Perhaps work on getting the picture together.
    Ragnj
Good. I vote for the Gothic and dark look.

update I took recent attempts, kinda merged them together, added more dramatic perspective and viola!

smuli: I have never expected these kind of words! I thought I would never meet anyone from old times who recognize me. I used to be shy and quiet I just suck at internet communication and it seems to be the only way for me to talk with such talented people like on this forum. Anyway, thank you! I indeed did work hard and I am very glad you have noticed it. It gives sense to the struggle.

    Best!

    magicians dragon gate

Basic layout for my attempt. Just need to create a connection between the magic user and the jaws opening, might add cogs instead of the lights on the side of the jaw. Will probably add more magic symbols on the rocks above the dragons head and add some more detail to the right foreground as it looks a bit plain at the moment.

    last minute aaah

Kind of wonky, but I wanted to try showing a gate made by ancient wizards, where they bound an elemental to seal the open gates. There is no physical door, but anything passing through without permission would be rebuffed/frozen/vaporized/etc. Beyond is a city of magic half-hidden in the clouds.

"Look carefully my boy, there are few wonders of True Magic left in this world such as this. While we wait for the warden i shall teach you the Making of..."

WIPs, I don't know which shape of gate yet!

Been really busy with game project that I haven't picked up my wacom stylus in ages. I've discovered this thread pretty late, haha, I wonder if I'll even finish in time.

Here's the thumbnail of what I think I'll be going with Let me know what you think.

ok, I know that environments are not my thing but I thought I'd participate this week anyway even though I'm not going to poll.

    magician gate WIP2

I've sketched in more detail and added some crystals to make the foreground more interesting. Still plenty to do, hope I can get it done on time!

Well...crap. I thought we had more time for this, or I wouldn't have slacked so much today! We'll see how far I get tonight I guess, but I figured it was time to show some progress.

Great job electricbill - you're the only one so far to use sigils and seals in your painting.

I for one would love to hear the story surrounding your image. The addition of the crystals is a nice touch too.
