    Unauthorized use of art

I'm not sure this is the right forum for this... I didn't see any forum specifically for the business of art, so if this is inappropriate I apologize (please move the thread if so).

Anyway, Illustrator Chris Buzelli had an illustration used by a CBS journalist without his permission - he complained, and the pic was removed, but the journalist's response is troubling to say the least.

Eventually both the director and the VP of the Society of Illustrators getting involved (in the artist's defense, obviously).

Read it here The artist's initial comment is #3, and the journalist's response is #6, then the discussion continues for a while.

The journalist then goes on to write a whole column about how art and the internet is supposed to work, which just makes things worse...

    -Chris

I am actually really glad to hear that! I assumed CA would have picked it up, but couldn't find anything...

Nah, I don't think that's needed. Although a sticky containing a FAQ on how to handle various kinds of copyright infringement wouldn't be a bad idea.

I think a forum for the business and legal side of art is a good idea.

I was more being snarky than serious, but yeah a business/legal area might not be bad.

Larger than the forum though, is there something we can do? I mean, I know humans are stupid meat bags and our voice wont reach every ear but this happens a lot, we all hate it, can we help? Jason Manley, as we've seen, is a warrior against this shit. We all look out for one another as best we can, but is there something constructive we can do? A campaign? A non-profit org? With all these changes and evolution that is scheduled for CA to revolutionize the art world, should we add "art thief activists" to our skill set? Thoughts?

The internet is filled with people who don't understand copyright.

It's quite encouraging to see the amount of people who came to Chris Buzelli's aid though.
