Tyrus - Clever with the basket .

JanJager - I like the harmless look of the pic, reminds me of if Dorothy would have woken up after Oz.

Update, totally blew this chow, might have to start over or bow out.

also gonna be starting late (later tonight, to be specific), and also don't know whether I'll finish in time, but since certain elements of it are already in my sketchbook (not the first Oz I've tried...), I will at least get one character done...

*grins* anyway, my own take (for which I *will* at least get the BW up!) is: what if Kevin Smith had made an Oz film? *grins* Adrian Edmondson as the Tin Man is my only solid influence right now, but I've got ideas for all four...

fdisk: The left hand of the lion is actually a right hand. It is bent outwards instead of inwards when it should have been the other way if that makes better sense.

Making some progress but kind of hating it right now. Just having to do all the fiddly small stuff.

Wow! There are some truely amazing pieces evolving on here. Looks like I'm not going to be able to finish. I had to work yesterday and now I have to spend today moving >_< Will do my best to try and get as much done as I can though.

Good luck everyone. It's going to be a tough one.

Stoph, I LOVE your image, really original!

Ok folks, I think mine is almost done - but PLEASE if anyone sees anything that is glaring in this (I added the tinman and not sure about him really, but I think it makes the image recognisable as wizard of oz rather than just a rossetti chick riding a lion!).

Again my concept was to imagine I was Rossetti and how I would paint this idea if I was him! (Rossetti being a Vicotrian artist). So I kept the colours muddy and muted.

Any crits most welcome - thanks!

Reymus: I totally love the rendering of his jacket!
Jager: The comical and fun mood of this sketch look really cool, I'd love to see this finished!
Oren90: thank you Your stuff is looking pretty nice so far. Try to use a little more colour variation to keep them from looking too dull. A little tint of blue/violet or pink here and there can give them a brilliant look
zaorr: REally cute! The lion looks a little squeezed in, though, maybe you could extend the canvas?
hideyoshi: awesome strokes, great designs! But I wouldn't expect anything else from you
fdisk: that's a pretty cool lion! yay for pink hair
stoph: great values and even greater design!
crossmirage: I like the dynamic look of your tinman, and the metal already looks so shiny
kittymeow84: I like your idea a lot. But you should work a little on your composition. Theres nothing to keep the viewers eye inside the picture plane.
paolo13: That's a pretty weird design! I like it, expecially the expression of your tinman. Watch your colous, though, the look a little dull right now. Get some reference for blonde hair e.g.
migsta: these are just too cute! I'd really like to see more
Artbymanon: I really like that idea. The lion looks pretty cool so far, and so does dorothy. I also like your composition a lot. Looking forward to seeing more

Well, here's what I got so far. I gotta stop painting every one or two hours because my eyes start to hurt a little. I'm not used to paint digitally anymore D:
I went with the red dress. Any crits welcome as always
Still so much work to dooooo D:

    yo! quick decision help:
    A or B?

artbymanon,i think you desaturated too much. i'd put some back into the leaves or something, maybe alittle on the lion's mane. also, the tinman ruins the picture, sorry. edit: i don't know what you did,but i looks better in the finals thread.

Wow, thank you all so, so much for all the feedback! I'm sorry I didn't thank everyone sooner, but the weekend imploded like it normally does and I ended up working overtime. I haven't had a chance to be online or even touch my drawing until today, and I'm working tonight as well. I will seriously bust a hump to get this done and hopefully the slight extension on Monday will see me through to final for the first time in probably a year >_> Thank goodness I'm off on Monday.

Jessi - You are my hero. Thank you for taking the time to do a PO, I think your suggestions are exactly what it needed I don't know if you're currently working for anyone out there in Dallas, but if they ever need an extra body I would quit my night job and haul butt to Texas at a moment's notice for the opportunity to work with you in person

Markus: You're right, and your suggestion goes hand in hand with Jessi's paintover - I need to make Dorothy more prominent so she isn't overwhelmed by the bg. I promise I'll finish this time!

Time to get crackin'! Sleep is for suckers.

    (EDIT) Some quick comments first:

AvisNocturna: Looking good! You're starting to get some nice depth all around, but be careful of tangents - right now you have several that are flattening it out in places. For example, the way the trees frame the Tinman and the Scarecrow: the leaves line up right at the Scarecrow's elbow, making it hard to tell what's in front of what. I would shift that over so there's some overlap of his arm over the treeline to push him in front. Some of the advice Jessi gave me would work well for you too - try adding some of the blue sky color to some of the trees and leaves right at the edges of the opening to soften them up and fade them out, so they'll look a little farther away. Even if the grove is relatively small and close to the characters, there would still be some indications of trees and leaves further behind them. I hope that makes some kind of sense, lol. There's also a tangent at Dorothy's back and the arm of the Tinman that you might want to tweak.

ArtbyManon: I think the lion and Dorothy are lovely, but I do have to agree that the Tinman is a little distracting. Also if you get a chance to revisit before the deadline, it might help to do a little hand painting over the leaves to add some variety and blend them in some. Right now it's very recognizable as a general brush preset. Otherwise a beautiful finished piece

Dang! 4:30 pm! Why is time against me...

Hey dudes - thank you for the feedback - well, to be honest i added the tinman because my lovely boyfriend said 'but its just a chick on a lion, how has that got anything to do with wizard of oz' - so i thought, hmm, i should add the tinman!!
WHY did i listen to him!!??? I can take out the tinman no trouble - my sister said the same as you guys are saying regarding him not fitting in.

Carnifex - all i did was ad a texture layer of canvas! it seemed to improve the tone. I'm gonna have a fiddle though!

Agnostes - Oh no, I just mentioned it because it seemed off with the film poster, but still having the Valve logo, etc. on it. It'd be fitting to put your own logo on there as well was my thought.

    ok. Entries are looking fantastic!

    Update time.

Not sure i'll be able to finish this in time. Glad theres a few extra hours but i'm not sure it'll be enough. Dont want to rush the piece and totally ruin it. I'll try my best though. Got a ton of stuff to do on it. Anyway. Here it is. C&C welcome.

Yeah, know what you mean, Stinger, landlord changeover and the associate paperwork has killed any chance of me finishing this in time... maybe someone or somethin' out there is trying to tell me something, but we Durbins are well known among friends and acquaintances as stubborn buggers, so I'm gonna do my best to do the next one from day one, darn distractions aside!

Still, a lot of *fine* entries, and looking forward to voting and seeing who gets to choose the next ChoW!
