Really want to get good at quick, expressive sketches. They're just full of movement and character. If anyone can recommend or link me any examples of artists who work in this way I'd really appreciate it.

Wow! Nice updates, Thomas. Love the last sketch. It's quite loose.

qlotzan - thanks for stopping by again. and for the kind words too. I'm not doing any studying other than self-tuition at the moment. Not even life drawing classes for a few weeks because of the school holidays. TAD is still a distant dream unfortunately until I get myself sorted with work. Anyway, I can keep practicing and learning and one day I might be there!

I started to draw a portrait of my gf but it turned into something a little more strange

haha Tom you really made me laugh with the portrait of your girlfriend, how on earth did you end up with that! LOL. I'm sure you should be seeing her more like your last drawing "3/ small colour/figure study" My, she must be understanding. Good stuff though, keep it up.

Nice man, those women sketches are very interesting especially the colors, but i'd try to avoid the white lines on this last one. They are some kind out of the whole style.
Keep up with the figure studies!

Marian - haha should, but I was pretty distracted by the mother-in-law and I just scribbled away!

knut - thanks, and I appreciate the crit. I agree with you on that one, it was a spur of the moment thing which didnt really work out.

Ok.. so I've posted it before. and probably will again. But Joseph Zbukvic is INCREDIBLE and he needs to be learned from - so I think I'll accept that challenge! I've been wanting to get into watercolours for a while now and as I will move to teach english in central america in only 4 months, I think itd be a great medium to learn before heading away.

Here is just a starting set, of flat washes, graded washes and some simple pieces. I think I need to get my hands on a decent set of brushes too, so maybe I'll invest.

Anyway, along with sketches I'll be posting these regularly from now on, even if some are a bit boring. Ive also been doing anatomy study and I think finally its starting to stick! But anyway, I'll post those tomorrow.

Marian - haha yeah well shes a pretty evil creature. And I can say that because she never reads this thread. I hope so, I feel very far away from now

As I'm always trying to explore new ways of learning to draw and paint, I stumbled across some dvds on watercolours on amazon. Then I saw that they are available on lovefilm. I subscribed, watched them both and they were great, and only cost me a couple of pounds a month to rent. I really recommend subscribing (there is a free 30 day trial period anyway) and getting your paws on some otherwise expensive art instruction dvds!

Anyway, this is (hopefully) for a friend of mine's album, to be released late this year. I sent it to him as a first draft so who knows what he'll think of it. Probably several more in a similar theme to come.

LOL Tom I hope you never get really, really famous and have some journalist find and quote this! Thanks for making me have a good laugh all week.

I like what you've done thus far for your friends album. Good the way you've 'grunged' it to go with the feel of the scene. Is this something that might get printed for a 'hold in your hand' CD or would it be a digital download type?

Jephyr X - thaniks for the kind words

Ok so Ive had another bash at something western themed for them, although I haven't had the feedback from the first yet I know they liked that last ostrich piece at the bottom of the last page. Here goes:

Doing great here. I felt the colours were off a little in one of your latest pieces, so thought I'd do a little overpaint. I only realized after I did it that you may have intended for a night or evening scene, but if that were the case the colours are off anyways.

If you wanted a day scene then it looks a little bit odd. The main reason for this is that the sky is too dark and it seems unnatural that way. I lightened the sky and shifted it towards a blue-green rather than a blue-purple. A bit more saturation to the ground and a little shift in value as it recedes also helps a bit. Lastly I softened the edge of the sky where you fade it off to white. The texture at the edge of the coloured areas is okay on the ground since ground is rough, but on the sky looks odd so I made it nice and smooth.

    Hope these changes help!

    And then you do this?

That is insanely good. The color harmony and rhythmic strokes over the water are scrumptious... like the best Red Leicester Cheese.

I do feel a kinship with your absolute obsession for drawing; but your thread has shown me that there's still an extra gear. Thanks man... I'll have to crank it up a notch or two.

holy shit, are you inspirational or what! In such a short period of time, incredible improvement. Love your careful use of line, very deliberate, I scribble way too much. I look forward to starting at the beginning of this thread and learning from you

p Sage - wow, thanks for going to all that effort to reply, I appreciate the feedback. I'll be honest I've worked my arse off but its been totally worth it up to this point, and there is still a long long long way to go. I look forward to seeing what you come up with yourself from now on!

carakhan - thanks, although yeah I often try and get out of being so deliberate. Its a result of my natural tendency when drawing, and doing so many studies over the past year! I'm trying to loosen up at the moment and find some sort of happy medium.

Thanks for those encouraging comments guys! - and for the votes of encouragement! This thread is approaching five stars now and I'm god damn gonna get it there if its the last thing I do!! I'm still working away, but had a mental weekend at nottinghill carnival, going out in Reading and generally partying at night and seeing art museums in the day. I went to the national portrait gallery on sunday and bought a serious bit of kit - a proper easel. Anyway, as a result of that I did the above oil portrait. And then this one too. Also, a couple of pages from my sketchbook which I've partly posted before, but with more added now.

I love pencil and I might love oils even more... more experimenting to come.

You have really strong linework. Your paints are a little behind, though.

Nice work. Great shapes in lines in this latest.

I'm determined to get some watercolour skills, starting with some zbukvic studies. Study number one and two. One thing I've come to realise today - its almost impossible to reproduce the actual colours and effects of a watercolour using this sort of scanning - I'll have to do some research into how to go about doing it properly.

Hey, love the watercolours, especially the lone sailing boat, very atmospheric.

    Pen drawings are excellent too.

    Watching!

Vritra - thanks again. I'm going to churn out these watercolour studies over the next few weeks whilst intermittently doing my own and learning the techniques needed for learning about edges and atmosphere (for starters)

AlexTooth - Thanks, I'll be updating more of both pretty much daily

Ok.. so watercolours GO! Another Zbukvic study, this time I took far longer to do it and achieved a much more accurate result, and learned a couple more techniques for producing that edge variation I crave in my watercolours. Anyway, this one took about 2-3 hours I imagine (not exactly sure). Again, the scan puts it to shame, but its better than not posting anything!
