Can I come have Christmas dinner at your house?

Ironical that it's on the same page with a snake and skull hahaha.

I really love your lines, but I think you can really impress us if you can figure out how to create a sense of depth at your edges. That's where the mass is lost!

Keep on goin, and Happy Holidays to you!

kiwigarbage - haha yeah sure there'll be loads of food so the more the merrier! you are right I'm working on my linework and edges with ink and pencil at the moment. They are improving but it feels very slow.

    hucumkedi - thanks again

LtPlissken - no worries. Yeah definitely agreed!

Second page of recipes with some art. This moleskine is the first sketchbook (of 7 in the last 9 months) that I really feel an attachment to. Hopefully over time they will start to be objects that I genuinely am proud of and value.

Another study from AustenFM's sketchbook. Each time I do one of these I learn about inking so I'll probably end up doing a few more (not tonight though I'm shattered)

Woop wooop chugga chugga .. etc etc.
Your moving places man, its really interesting to see where you go and what youve done.
Ill come in and rave about something when I see it... but not for now, I dont need to tell you to work. Your SB is even bigger than mine now!

Have a great christmas too buddy.

Edit - I thought of something.
Your clearly using 2 size of pens on these inks, so where you do try and pay more attention to making the line weight change more subtley. Practice that steady hand for really nice strokes that join up with the small lines. They tend to dominate the small lines otherwise.

devastacio - thanks for linking me that! There are some incredible inks in there.. might do some studies of those later!

    ryanoir - you too man

PHATandy - thanks for stopping by again, that crit is seriously useful! I will try and make it less noticeable in the future and use more variety of pens/techniques.

OmertA - checked out your sb too and you've been working hard also! Merry christmas

    matty_mcmullen - thanks

I woke up this morning at 6:30 had some green tea and started drawing! Forced myself to get up at this hour as every now and again I like to make myself seriously draw alllll day. I do that anyway but in a much more focused way whereby I don't have friends come over or distract myself.

Started off by checking out some sketchbooks and saw that PHATandy had some nice links to modern "masters" so I looked up Katsuya Terada. - WOW. Incredible stuff so I did a copy in watercolour of one of his Zelda pieces.

Caterpillar Sketchy - complete rip-off but wanted to recreate the style without doing a copy.

P.s. does anyone out there know of a good comic art website? I'm wanting to do more watercolours like the one above because it goes well with all the inking I'm doing currently.

You only went and picked my FAVORITE Terada piece. I love his Zelda pictures, he brings so much life out of those little 2d sprites etc etc. Beautiful.

With regards to comics, your better off knowing a series or an actual comic artist and going from there. Theres an abundance of crap comics out there and even the good ones can still be badly drawn. Try asking for reccomendations and look up similar comics or artists other works and stuff. Youll find the really good comic art by word of mouth really, ask people in sketchbooks like TheGnolls or Austins, they probably have good tastes. Ill give you some reccomendations too if you want.

PHATandy - yeah I looked through loads of pieces to find my favourite. yeah I'd love to know some comics if you know some good ones (I have never read a comic the whole way through other than MAUS and Batman: Dark Knight Returns

devastacio - thanks for the links. I don't have time to check them out right now but I will have a look a bit later on tonight!

    Zat - thanks very much

Right.. I did end up having a little break to make some cranberry and apple sauce for the chicken tomorrow. But then I got back to drawing and started doing some figure studies. Absolutely crap line width and weight. Recently I started doing studies with a HB which is a lot less responsive for this kind of style.

Memo to self: switch back to a 2B for less render-based work.

Either way I'm fairly happy with them just for their simplicity. At the moment I'm attempting to cut down on sketchy lines and get crisp lines that are reasonably in proportion.

Hey there. I like all the studies I see, my favorite is of course the "HERES JOHNNY" piece haha. I like the zelda piece too, it has a nice, 70's simple feel to it, looks like it should be in a comic book..a zelda comic would be sweet. Anyways, great stuff man, keep up the great work! Cheers!

LtPlissken - yeah terada is awesome!

    Brahimpag - no worries

qlotzan - Merry christmas to you too!

Here are some studies from christmas day.

First the AustenFM study which I decided to add some colour to. I just can't get enough of watercolours!

Second.. Two studies from Nathan Fowkes's Landart page

Finally, a landscape from harry potter in watercolour (again)

Even on christmas day there is some time to get art done!

ryanoir - thanks buddy. Yeah watercolour is seriously fun and I think in the hands of someone who really knows their stuff (not me) it can be one of the most incredible mediums I know of.

Here is a small small section of what I've been doing today. Some drawings from photo references in practice for a life drawing class I've signed up to on the 19th of January. only 5 weeks long and one day a week for 3 hours, but I'm determined ot squeeze every ounce of learning out of it.

I noticed that my drawing has been VERY linear recently and had almost no variation in line width/weight. Time to remedy that.

My own first then some I saw from another sketchbook which I loved. (Mine are based on this style of drawing with the pencil almost as a paintbrush for laying down values)

    Hey there,

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas. Those watercolor studies looking good. Should get my hands on a traditional media as well. but self-studying everything could be overwhelming. btw did you try digital watercolor in Painter? tried it once when i got hold of a demo of Painter 11. Looks cool i must say. But takes loads of processor cycles.

Well i started the 'Drawing heads and hands' by Loomis. Well, little different than Riven Phoenix's stuff but i feel Loomis approach is well balanced and more practical. Im trying to combine both types. Anyways when drawing female heads Loomis books are the best yeah?

Ill drop by later mate. Keep up the good work.

Hey Tom hope you enjoyed your Christmas. These watercolour studies look good. I'm glad to read you will be going to life drawing class in January. Don't worry that it's only a short course for a couple of hours a week; mine are only 2 hour sessions once a week but I value the time with a life model above all other studies at the moment. You will get loads from it and progress very quickly I'm sure.
