    Digital Paint Fumes

Finally worked up the nerve to join, yadda yadda yadda. I'm an illustration major at Columbia College in Chicago. I came here to get a heck of a lot advice and criticism, so have at it. Thanks for stopping by.

I'll try to post some paintings and life drawings soon.

Oh dear, your last picture scares me much! But it can be true~ I quite like your flower sketches - what is the Paranoia thing about? I think that's your best - the link doesn't work, i'm curious

Ha, I felt the bottom needed something so I just made up that fake organization website The assignment was to make something like a throwback to the 1930's wpa posters using any subject matter So I just went for something simple since I don't usually use flat colors on purpose. Thanks for checking out my sketchbook!

Hey guys, Here's an assignment from class where I had to turn my classmate into a character; he was a fan of detective novels and pulp stories. The rest is a few sketchbook pages and some drawings I was messing around with for the above cartoon. The pencils don't look so hot after scanning in, Ill try to get better at that. If anyone is checking this stuff out tell me what you like about it or if it makes you wanna vomit please feel free to share. Thanks!

Hey guys. Here are some recent paintings I've done. I just started using oils this semester and I LOVE THEM. I was always intimidated by them, but I feel pretty free when I'm messing around with them, they are quite fun. But other than that I've been pretty busy at school and I can't wait for the summer so I can start posting every day or so. I'm starting a painting tonight that I'll hopefully have up in the next few days. For now I'm telling myself that not many people are checking out my sb cause I'm not posting as often as I should. THAT WILL CHANGE I SWEAR!

First painting is the first one I did (what a friggin blast) The orange in the second painting is so gross. I couldn't mix the color exactly how I wanted (wouldn't mind some tips for mixing) but I assume that comes with practice. The colors aren't showing up on screen as I would hope. But, See you guys soon. (p.s. all paintings were just wet on wet in one session)

Hey all. Classes are over for the semester, so I will be posting much more often. I am going to do a lot of painting this summer, I cant freaking wait.
Here's an illustration for an autobiographical book cover I did for class. I was actually really happy with it, scanned in the pencil then colored and everything in photoshop.

So I've been lazy with posting lately, but I have been drawing a lot regardless. Here is a couple figure drawings and two oil paintings I've done lately. I swear I'll be back within the next couple days to post some more.

Here are some silhouettes I did for some warm up because I was feeling sloppy today, and a time traveling character I started working on tonight.

Here is a self portrait I did this morning. First go at acrylics in a new moleskine. I had no idea acrylics actually dry THAT fast. Cheers

    Hello

I see what your saying, youve got only one post by someone else in this entire sb, i have no idea why that is, cause this stuff is great! I love your use of color in your paintings. The life drawings look good, and the woman wearing black looks fantastic. The time traveler character doesnt look as good as some of your other stuff, kind of cartoony, but i guess that what you were going for. Overall great stuff, you are a very talented artist, i hope you progress in your artistry, and i hope more people check out this awesome page. Good luck!

I like what's going on here and I really enjoy your use of color in your portraits.

What I notice though is that a lot of your paintings are pretty rough and generalized, like the landscape ones. Maybe it would be helpful to do some color paintings where you try to include as much detail and accuracy as possible?

And yay for summer breaks. xD

And here's my sketchbook. Help me out with some c&c?

Hey, great stuff you got going here, had a question for you, do you know what the differences would be in curriculum in a illustration major and an entertainment design major? cause i'm planning on going to art center in pasadena, ca, and was wondering if you knew anything about that...

Seamus- Wow, you are way too kind. Thanks for stopping by, good luck to you too!

eclectic rhapsody- Thanks for the input, I think you're right about the detail. I'll hopefully get going on a painting in the next few days. I appreciate you checking out my stuff!

olivepalm- Thanks for stopping by, I have no Idea what the curriculum would entail!! Whats even sadder is I did some research and I really do not know, sorry!

So today I have felt completely discouraged with my work, and just feel like barfing. Allthough the comments I have gotten cheered me up a great deal. Here is a VERY small update on the time traveler. I have a layer with my values for coloring, but it is really really awful. I'm going to put a lot more work into this before I show it again. Here are also some dumb sketches from today, some studies, some from my head. Later guys

    Barfing? D:

    I can relate.

I'm quite interested in those monkeys, that yellow and blue woman and her monochrome friend, but is it weird that the blue and yellow woman reminds me of a really artistic rendition of the Marge Simpson character? I mean, what with the yellow skin and tall blue "hair."

But yesh. You should totally try drawing your dreams.

And here's my sketchbook. Help me out with some c&c?

Why didn't you finish the girl in the black suit? it's very nice - I think your strongest is the guy screaming, it looks very organic and real paint. I think there's a big improvement from your first posts to this - and in short time too.

I share your pain, I'm going through the same feelings as you! I can't comfort you, if I could, I'd be helping you! XD

    Keep it up!

eclectic- Ha, I guess I can see marge now too(...for the record The old Simpsons is my favorite show of all time). And I totally had an illustration worthy dream last night that Ill hopefully get too

neovirtu- Thanks a lot, I'll get around to cleaning up the black suit one, thanks for stopping by again.

Overall I'm still in a total creative slump, I have just been doing dumb sketching in my book. Here's a speed painting done in photoshop from the other day. I'll try to get over myself and have some work to show next post.

Hey guys, July was a freaking busy month for me. I've been productive tho. Here's some recent stuff.

A Sorolla photoshop study (fucking awesome painter who I've never heard of until recently) and an oil painting on cardboard (great combo) used photo ref. The proportions are all wonky but I was pretty happy with it.

Take it easy, I'll hopefully be back soon.

    mmmmmmmm, paint fumes......

Bah, I blah blah blah blah, bizzerp.

Here's some recent stuff, in order of completion. The cityscape's composition blows, it come out of speed painting and I didn't really know where it was going. I've been trying to get better at composition, if anyone could recommend some good resources that'd be awesome! Maybe p.m. me if you don't wanna bump the book. Well conceptart, I will hopefully be back with some goodness soon.

    -artists i'm currently obsessed with
    el motherf**cking Coro.
    Tommy lee edwards
    joaquin sorolla
    sterling hundley

Also, if you haven't checked out, the sidebar-comics podcast. It steps outside of comics into conceptart and commercial illustration. It also goes through the artists processes pretty in depth, valuable stuff

    Hello internet,
Here are some more figure studies. I completed a figure triptych study, I'm pretty sure I learned a lot doing these. I've been having a lot of fun painting these, they're part of a figure painting demo I have to do as a project for a class. I can barely draw with a friend looking over my shoulder, I'm not sure how painting in front of a room full of people will go. The last was done in Acrylic, I will definitely consider using them instead of running to oils next time. a la bapsi inspired me to work on my line work, so I'll post some of that within a few days.

Man conceptart.org friggin rocks for inspiration. There's nothing like seeing million people who are kicking your ass to get you going. Here's some line work as promised. I got out of class early last night so I went to the Tojo gallery here in Chicago for life drawing. Very glad I went, the last ballpoint is the hour pose, which isn't finished but was fun. Also a dab of some acrylic to finish the post. I have an itch for some digital so I'll try to be back soon, hope the work isn't too boring.

Later guys, everyone keep tearing it up,
    Matt

    Hey guys,
I feel pretty embarrassed for not posting in so long.
Here's a sketch for an oil painting I want to get started on the second I find some wood,
    a self portrait,
a few studies, I tried sealing a few sketchbook pages with matte medium used oils on them, it's is pretty fun and has a good texture too it.
And I also included a WIP. I tried an environment using Sparth's method of using the custom shapes tool in photoshop. It's great, it got my heart going just laying down shapes and pulling out forms and what have you. I swear I'm trying to work on my composition even tho it looks like ass right now. It needs a lot more work but I am happy with its current state. Props to Sparth, what an amazing fucking artist

take er easy, thanks for stopping by

I'm liking your recent work fellow Chicagoan. That last digital is very cool, mood and the open composition works well. The lady in red in your sketchbook is great too. Watch out for the proportions on the Sargent study - her face is too stretched out. I'd recommend slowing down when you work and making clear, distinct values in your work. Right now they seem a little muddy because there are way too many values competing all over and in the end it doesn't read very well.

    mmmmmmmm, (digital) paint fumes......

    ....oh Hi

I am extremely embarrassed for not posting in such a great while.

Gamerhomie- Much freaking obliged my chicago friend. I appreciate your advice, you're totally right. Looking back at those studies, they are really terrible, I'll have to revisit the Sargent study. It means a lot to have someone of your caliber giving some sound advice.

First piece, Editorial, almost finished, I need to flesh out the homeless man on the bottom and render out the gun/bayonet the main character is holding. I also am still messing around with the top right corner of the
piece, which is bothering me.(maybe I am not almost finished.)

Sorry for the glare on the oil and the blown out scans

The last piece is a quick sketch with oil on top of charcoal on bristol board. very interesting experience

    Good day, thanks for looking
(p.s I am shitting my pants waiting for the new Radiohead album)
