Boostin' my creativity! Come help Javin improve!
Hay! My name's Javin!
I'm not going to school for illustration, but it's a fun thing to do in my free-time.
So I'd figure I'd post my daily artistic messes and hopefully have you guys help me improve.
Sounds sort of fun, right?
Here are a few paintings I've done lately. They are all really just speed paintings of me trying new techniques and ideas. I'd really like to improve on my environment skillz.
Some little environment scene that started in Alchemy to generate shapes. I'm totally un-pro at coming up with ideas so I think Alchemy is pretty sweet.
This is a scene of a bus stop that I did from a photo ref.
Believe it or not this is an apple. Just a quick still life I did in about an hour. I think I got the general point across haha.
And this is an portrait photo study type dealio.

Umm yah! I've noticed I have a pretty keen sense of color. Not pro or anything, but I understand what's going on.
Alchemy is a life saver for generating ideas. I love using the Type Shape generator and just goin' to town.
I'll probably be posting in here daily. I can't promise that it will all be superb, but hay whateva!

I guess I'll post this WIP here too.
It's gonna be some sort of futuristic building with a balcony overlooking some ragged city...while the sun is setting...YEAH!
I started this one in Alchemy as well.
I can't shape out the building so I am currently bringing the balcony part into Sketchup to make something sweet then do an overlay in Photoshop to paint.
I started this project with really positive intentions, then realized I don't really like structural type stuff as much as plants and stuff.
Well here she be, mateys! Argg!
*Updated WIP is in the post below.

Here is a speed painting done using techniques I learned from towy!
He's probably who I'm most inspired by this week. Hah.
30 minutes done in Photoshop CS3 starting from two random pictures of me.
March 26th, 2010 #8
hehe not bad ; )
you should continue when you think it isnt finish for you, the speed paint get some technic too with brush and textures, that can be long get what you want ithe style what you want; you can use some real pic like mattz painting for work quick, like part of the sky, write link for your sketchbook (signature) too
i m not the best for speed paint check other guys too on this forum (SamsonsReaper for example )
if i have time maybe i will explain my technic about landskapes, a was learn alone almost
so you can do it too

Good start, some nice textures in the enviro's.

Here is a painting from this morning.
After towy told me about SamsonsReaper, I went and checked him out and his videos. All I can say is wow. I must have captured like at least over infinity inspiration points just this morning!
So I took a picture a friend sent me over an IM a few years ago and BAM! Made it into this scene of a guy pushing a boat off a crazy looking sandbar type thing. It took a little over an hour to make.

Man...these last pieces exude style!!! Love it man!!

Here is one from last night and a bit this morning.
I'd say probably 2 hours of work on it, but the whole first hour was me trying to figure out a composition haha. It started off from a picture of this girl I know in lederhosen in a forest, and a picture of me on my laptop.
It's some birds flying over a wintery, lava-y scene to get to that big rock thing far off in the distance.
I'm not too sure about the lava hole. I really want it to be there but it doesn't seem like it's 100% real.
I'd love some feedback on it though.

Here is a WIP. It's supposed to be some people on donkey's traveling on some mountain pass type dealio. It just looks a little off to me. Suggestions would be great. I think I'm gonna leave this one for a little bit until something comes to mind.

Here is a little speedpaint from yesterday and today. I think it's around 1 hour total. I'm not the greatest at anatomy, but it's a homeless guy carrying a bindle.

I've been busy with video work the past couple of days so I haven't had too much time to paint.
I basically just like the colors in this one. Only spent about 45 minutes on it. I really should take the time to actually finish a piece and develop it more.
Maybe next time!

Here's another piece I've been working on.
Some sort of run down futuristic city.
I'd love some comments!

Here is a work in progress.
Movie still from The Life Aquatic!
April 10th, 2010 #21
Here is some more progress on the Steve Zissou painting.
I'm actually very happy with it as it is.
Some things seem a little off, but I can't put my finger on it.
It would be nice if anyone had any ideas how to improve it.

It's a buffalo drinking from a stream.
April 18th, 2010 #27
Just a real quick photo study.
And a spoon...they are so hard! Ahhhh! Any tips for future spoon paintings?
I think I got the colors pretty nice though.
Lolz update: My step sister just saw the spoon from about 5 feet away and was like, "Why did you take a picture of a spoon?" I was like, "OHHH...YES!"

I've been doing a lot of vector artwork in Illustrator lately.
It's been fun!
Here is a few. Tell me what you think! I know vector stuff doesn't get posted on here a lot, but art is art!
Here is an illustration of my friend Ben. He is always sitting at his computer in the most awkward positions.
Satirical take on big cities. It's a double-decker icecream truck / hotdog stand.
SAM-U-RYE! It's a samurai sandwich! Hi-ya!
Illustration I did for a friend for a website. The site is called The Plagueround. It's a video blog dedicated to infectious diseases. They wanted some cute germs.
Here is a quick Photoshop portrait study. I just really liked her expression and the composition of the picture.
I have also redesigned my website into a blog!
Go take a look if you want!
