Round #171 Giant Amphibious War Beast

    Topic:

    #171 Giant Amphibious War Beast

Time to get epic folks. The year is 4010 and after the effects of the Great Melt in 2056 as it would be known, the world has begun to regain its balance as the polar ice caps start to reform. But unseen to the small population of humans after these epic events is the damage and unexpected mutations that occured under the vast seas that covered 95% of the Earth's surface. As the salty waters recede, and fresh water which became a scarce commodity after the disaster starts to become more plentiful, bands of men used to sailing the mighty oceans begin their fueds for sovereignty over these precious areas. Wars break out and of course great beasts are recruited to act as the guardians of these rare sites. Your job is to design these beasts which have been chosen solely for their size, and ruthless temper.
So, make a war machine, a species which appears to have been bred (even if by Mother Nature) only to fight and destroy that relies on water to keep it wet because of its amphibious nature. You can include a rider(s) on this one and very light accessories such as harness and so on, but everything about the warlike aspects of the creature must be part of the creature's anatomy, not a bunch of stuff attached by the wranglers. Also keep in mind that this is a giant, roughly the size of a humpback whale. Include some reference to demonstrate scale. Last, have fun. That's an order.

    Deadline:

    Friday March 25, 2010.

    Finals go here: http://="http://www.conceptart.org/f...d.php?t=180865

I'm so in. Going to try a different approach this time and really plan it out. Trying to sketch it out on the comp first and really work on my values. I'm going for a snapping turtle sorta thing.

Sha-BAM. I couldn't wait. I had to whip something out. A crustacean counts, right? I mean, it's kind of the perfect war-beast

I am so in on this one, awesome concept! Since I did a whale/serpentine creature for the last COW, I think i will looks elsewhere for inspiration. Hopefully I can come up with something unique

Mfrank - Really like the initial design, you can already get a sense of its epic size.

(lark - Its looking good, although remember its an Amphibious creature, At the moment I am getting the sense of a deep sea creature, maybe if you show it emerging from the waves? Dragging itself across the ground?

Fiddzy - Thanks! I'll be pushing the scale of it in the final art

(lark - Killer sketch! I dunno how amphibious it would be, though 0_o

really nice topic - going to post some sketches later -
and i secon fiddzy - amphibous means that the beast needs water to keep skin moist but is albe to walk on land - an giant octopus or shrimplike creature would be quite far from amphibious- i think the difficult part of this is that the amphibious animals (on earth) have soft skin and normally - i think - no claws and stuff - they seem to rely more on poison, fast toungue-attcks and other original strange weapons - not so much on sharp teeth and claws.

Life on earth is expensive, but it includes a free trip around the sun every year.

That's true, Vaghauk. But it's about concept. Amphibians do some oxygen absorption through their skin. There's nothing stopping you from having the thin skin over most of the body and working through claws and stuff elsewhere. But who says it has to be a claw either?!

ardescoere- i mentioned the claws -cause of mfranks creature - i think when scorge puts amphibious in the topic he intends that the monster should be mainly amphibious not crustaceous or whatever - nothing keeps us from mixing up other elements into the creature - but i guess the challenge in an concept design is to stay as close to the topic as possible. When you say its about concept - i agree - thats what i meant.
so if somebody declares to design an amphibious creature with crustaceous or whatever elemets - its allright - but i guess just choosing another anmimal-family as declared reference ,like - lobsters ,squids or wolfs is maybe a bit off-topic. Why not look closly what amphibious means and use this as the primal inspiration. Its easy to design an crustaceous warbeast - the slimy and posenous nature of the amphibean world gives an different challenge.
anyway - i´m just trying to be constructive - i really like the entries so far and nobody should be restricted in his imagination.

Youre talking about amphibians though Vaghauk, Amphibius just means it can live on both land and in water. When we talk about concept creatures that doesnt really require a special look.

An amphibian approach that uses poison and slimy toungs etc is a pretty cool idea non the less.

yeah - you are probably right - its an semantic question - everybody is totally free to interpretate it on his own way. Anyway - i think an concept-creature better fits somehow to its own concept and that might look totally different - of course - but the description/concept got to fit to the topic - if it says amphibious creature but represents an wolf or squid it should come up with an good reason for that different look.

Vaghauk - like what Ragnj said, amphibious dose not mean that they have to be amphibians, there's a big different. An amphibious creature can look like anything, it dose not have to have Frog or Newt like qualities. The term amphibious means that an animal/plant/vechicle ect... can live/operate both in the water and on the land, Crabs are amphibious because they can do just that, yet they don't have any resemblance to amphibians. Of course that dose not mean a design can't incorporate amphibian features, infact I think that's a really good area to look at and draw inspiration from.

    Hope that helps.

    Anyways now to my concept.
My current idea is to design a giant amphibious Clam like creature, which literally sits almost static in the middle of its protective site, like a large and potentially beautiful monument. However despite its appearance its actually a deadly guardian, which attacks anyone trying to steal from its owners watery home, protecting the site with its telepathic abilities and hidden tentacles. Able to control the very water it lives in to attack its enemies using the power of its mind.

Here is a super quick sketch to get across my idea....

    Any thoughts?

ok- you are totally right. Its probably my lousy english... for me being right - it would have to say AMPHIBIAN creature !!! sorry - i mixed the terms... i take everything back.
i´m a bit emabarassed being so narrowminded.... thanx for pointing me to the right direction.

Man I wish I had a tablet at work, I've got a sweet image in my head, but since the Turtle idea has been taken I'm gonna have to go with a giant mutant frog-like thing. It'll be my first COW and I'm excited.

So far all the designs are really good.

Its been covered, but Amphibious just means ability to use land and water. I think a good reason for the different look you're speaking of is covered in the mutation part of the theme description. There's no reason in 4010 a mutant squid couldn't have mutated to cross bridges of land or something. Hell, pet octopus squeeze out of their tank and into other fish tanks just to eat em up, and crabs use land and water. Either way, I'm excited about the designs so far and to see what everyone ends up with.

Just really wish I could start drawing now...

edit \/\/ you could incorporate the slime into its weaponry/defense

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to change it up a bit. I think it needs to be a bit more land able.

Mfrank- yours looks pretty badass. Can't wait to see the final!

BananaHUNT- looks great, good to have another first timer in on my first attempt.
