Awesome updates as always Darren!!! Living up to the username as always!
Incredible work on those goggled wearing portraits, excellent rendering throughout but especially on the goggles themselves, nice use of distortion in the faces themselves a nice yet convincing change.
Beautiful rendering on the pencil drawing also!

    Cool cat too!!
Looking forward to the next update!

Thanks guys, Mister Bigglesworth is awesome. So affectionate, I think he is a siamese cat?

Anyway, here is a quick value sketch, just tonal practice, small version and then the large version so you can see there are no details =)

Hope this helps you guys out =)

Looks really good. In the looseness youve created lots of nice detail in and around all those tentacles, good texture too.

Amazing work as always Magic Man, love it everytime you post! Thanks for the inspiration!

Aw, thanks guys, I really do appreciate the comments, always makes me feel nice. I'm glad you all like the sketches and they help out some.

When I was young, I used to try to get my art better to make other people smile, I can't see you, but hopefully you sometimes smile =)

    Cheers, Daz

If not smiling its probably because Im just doing that frowny sort of concentration face as I try and understand what you did, like how you get your rendering so slick and even looking.

    Heres a couple anyways..

When I was younger I wanted to grow a mustache just like Vinnie Paul's. Now I'm a bit older and wiser and realise its way too much work.
But never the less I am a portrait of shaved happiness every time you post something so thanx a mill for that.

Hey, Darren! I added you on facebook (this is Jon; same last name on here) a few days ago. I've had this account for a while, but I've yet to comment on anyones thread yet... 'til now, haha.

You're stuff amazes me, and always is inspiring! As I said on my comment on your art on fb, it's the best inspiration I can find. Your rendering on your work is just top notch, especially on the digital works. Would you be against uploading your brush set? I'm eager to practice drawing digitally!

    Heya friends of mine =)

Thanks again for the lovely messages, y'all rock!

Here are some graphite renders for a private commission, the piece of paper is about 4ft x 3ft, I never rendered anything even half as big as this before in pencil, so it has been a massive learning curve! I'm hoping it looks okay, after working on something for a long time, you forget whether it looks okay or not, eek.

Work wise, things are going really well, been commissioned for another two sci-fi type illustrations, another indie Xbox game cover, did some art direction a week or so ago and also landed some pitch document design work with a UK/US film production house and probably will do a bunch of concept for them also. So thing are travelling a-smoothly.

Also got a couple of awesome plaster busts, they rock man!

Also attached a photo of my humble little home office hehe, this is where I spend 95% of my time during the week, it is my fortress of solitude =)

You know, some people need to be around other people so much. I'm not one of those people, I'm a social dude, but I'm an introvert in extrovert skin. I feel the happiest alone and creating, I was brought up to think that this was a bad thing. Now I now that for me, in my work, this is one of the biggest blessings I have. I am a lone wolf, that is my nature =)

That's not to say I don't love being around with other cool peeps. I hang out with some awesome guys and girls every Sunday Sketching. I really love inviting people along, so if any of you are ever in Melbourne, please let me know! I would love to meet you in person! I've invited quite a lot of Internet friends down to sketch with us and they become good friends, its the whole "we are all artists" feel ya know? You can joke about art stuff, something I just cannot do with my family or older friends, they just don't "get" it.

Take care my friends, I hope you all have a lovely day!

    Much love, Darren

darren you have a beautiful rendering technique that i love. just wonder how you do it, i wonder each day and each night, it eats me up in side, its kind of a disease, you bring so much confusion to a young lad such as myself.

Thanx for the long shout out and invitation ... Hmmm ... I wounder if my canoe will take me as far as Melbourne. Just know that if you ever planning a trip to sunny South Africa ... Mi casa es su casa.

The pencil rendering is coming along damn fine.

Working on a title cover image for a small indie game =)

Just started a couple of hours ago.

Small version and larger one with brush strokes. I'll post the steps later once I've finished.

This sketchbook is like a never ending orgasm.

Every piece you posted has some significance and personification to it. It's just a joy to go through each and every single one of them, and not just skim over it but rather stare it because every line and detail you place in your work delivers a sense of meaning to it.

I subscribed to your thread sometime ago but couldn't hesitate to post. Please keep posting!!

that pencil drawing was really nicely done man, i love how you did those patterns at the bottom! YOu must have some patience! The digi is looking good so far. i'm wondering if its worth cropping that left shoulder to give the muzzle flash and gun more room to breathe? Just a thought. Keep it up!

Excellent job on that mural drawing. i didn't know those people at all but i feel you captured there who they were.

a young and happy family whos lifes were cut short. you know a piece of art is great when it works pure emotion into the viewer (me).

Overall you sketchbook and story are very inspiring, hope you the best.

Heya guys! I was demonstrating how to sketch in colour to one of my private students.

About 40 minutes as I was also explaining what I was doing as I went along.

Hopefully it helps you out, these are the major steps:

    1. Quick outline - this won't be the final image, but is the basis for a pretty strong image. I made my pencil sketch fast and loose.

    2. Block in general colour values, don't be afraid to paint outside the lines. I like doing that as it requires I paint it out and gives a nicer feel to the image.

    3. Cleaning up, the image is at the ugly stage, doesn't look anything like the final product, but that's fine, don't worry and it will work out =)

    4. Nailing down on some details, being a bit more careful with smaller brushes.

    5. Blending and details.

This was a pretty fast sketch, no where near finished, but it gives an idea of process.

    Daz
