Thread: knut's Sketchbook
March 16th, 2010 #1
Hi everyone. I am totally new in this section so i will start with a few numbers of sketches, made by hand and one or two of them colored in photoshop. To be more specific, the colored woman is my very first try in using photoshop. Most of these sketches are made for a serious game i work on. I wanted some kind of special characteristic, so i hope to suceed it first with the fat, non symmetrical, black outlines and the big masses of shadows and colors. I will add more sketches in the following days, included others which are irrelevant to the game.
I' d like you to write anything that can help me, all the negatives, photoshop techniques etc.
Look at the later pages for updates. Thanks!

This is a testing piece of the backround image style of an adventure game. It supposed to be in Corfu Island. It has many issues though. Waiting for your comments.

Hi Knut. I see you are developing your own style. By doing so you would profit a lot by also studying anatomy. The last sketch, for example, her head is too big.
Keep working hard!

At last some critigue! First of all thank you for the reply. I am very pleased if you say that it has "a style" indeed. As for the heads, i was to make them bigger but i think you are right, i overdid it. Also, yes I HAVE to study anatomy cause all my sketches are from my imagination which of course comes from observation. Have you got any propositions about anatomy books etc? Online or not.

Hey you have quite a charming style going on here! I especially liked the expressions and pen work in post 5. Your lines convey a lot of personality in each character. I can't really critique as I'm still new, but I do agree with Ivan's advice about the heads being a little too big.
As for anatomy resources, a lot of people here recommend Andrew Loomis and George Bridgman. Glenn Vilppu's stuff might be of aid to you, too. There's a thread with some links that can help you: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=160487

Sorry guys for the Greek but KingKostas is from my place so i could not resist! We were saying once again and that i must learn anatomy!

Hello everyone. Some updates for today. My very first try in studying anatomy, woman body and dirty legs! Next is ... depressed Attilas (!) and Fidel, the dog/ cat duo of my neighbour. I must get faster if i want to draw animals real-time... Anyway, they made me the favor in some positions (no, didn't use animal violence!) and stayed still.. as still can be. Next up is something quick just for fun, so, many mistakes and didn' t care
Pencil on paper.

Looks like you are having fun with your studies. That's great to see. Keep up with the anatomy works. I like how the feet and animals came out. Looking forward to seeing more from you!
May 9th, 2010 #23
Coreanseoul thank you very much for your comment. The truth is i try to find time cause that's not my actual studies... Some more updates for now, an old sketch of Krysztof Penderecki (composer) on the Threnody score and ... the feet of my room-mate (left) and mine while digesting pizzaa... I liked the shadows on the 1st (of the bad scanning) so i kept it. Pencil on paper.

Κώστα να σαι καλά, δε φαντάζεσαι πόσο κουράγιο μου δίνεις. Για την ακρίβεια ήταν ένα τσακ για να ξαναρχίσω και πάλι καλά που μ' έσμπρωξες!
SO, guys i' m sleepless for almost 2 days so i am posting something last i just finished. I named it "The burden" but didn' t exactly know what the result would be when i started. I made exaggerating perspective to almost all the objects, trying to give the sense of fictional (not that i could do realistic persp ). Not finished yet (the sky is empty but maybe it's better that way due to the full of lines rest of the paper) but i' ll see if i get to it again. Maybe some colouring sometime.
Blue pen on paper as usual. Critique is welcome as allways.

hehehe probably needs some kind of perspective even a basic one.
Try to study perspective so that later you can play with it and do whatever perspective you want.
Set your horizon line set one point on it, and then everyline must go there.Ok its not exactly like that but try doing some studies with simple objects like a cube or something.
Do some sketches and probably we will be able to do some paintover
May 14th, 2010 #27
Thanks Kostas! I have some books in mind about the persp issue.
I just finished a piece for the adventure, one of the female protagonists. I tried to makes her in a way that she has a characteristic look (body, face, position etc) and no the classic beauty. It need some final touches i think but i have to go now. Critique please!
