I like your idea, but the shadows on his skin look quite muddy. You could fix this by going over them with a warmer colour on a layer set to Soft Light (this works well for highlights too)

    Looks good Liffey, few things;

    - closest arm looks a little long
    - his eye line looks skewed compared to the chin of the mask
    - it doesn't quite look like he's holding onto the gun. his hand's just floating above the handle it seems. moving it down would be a quick fix.
    - rimlight/bounced light hitting him from behind might help his silhouette stand out more. Either that or lightening the ground. EDIT: ah you did add a bit in the last update.

    Good goin'

You're going in the right direction, 'specially if you take Jason Rainville's advice. Personally I'd go for somewhat starker shadows, just to give him that little extra crispyness. Probably just a taste thing, bah.

    Nice going, keep it up!

I think this will be my finished entry... But just in case, any suggestions? I think this is the strongest background I've ever painted, but it still lacks something (maybe I'm being harsh on myself?)

Well, considering this is quite a warm, monochromatic piece (not sure if that was what you were aiming for), you could try and work some cooler tones into it. It also looks to me as though both his hands could use some extra attention in terms of shadows/highlights.

Love your tattoo design, by the way.

Thanks for the feedback paolo13. Think the problem with the image being flat comes from wanting the character to have a more stylized cartoon look, and to have a more slender body than that of a butch beefcake. So Im having a bit of trouble getting some depth in without the shading looking too harsh. Willing to listen to any tips on this, but I think it just comes down to practice. And the grass is only a temp thing untill I work out what to do with the feet, but I do want long grass in there, just not as dense.

Thanks Jason and Suneater! I tried to fix those issues.

GoGoJojo: It doesn't really seem like a character to me. Maybe you could fix this with a more purposeful use of tattoos like Jason Rainville is doing, but I think I'd rather be able to see her face and see more design elements outside of the tattoos.

Lady Chestnut: Make sure that it's clear what are tattoos and what is clothing. Right now I can't tell whether it's lace or tattoos.

Suneater: I think it would look more natural if his hands were held up more, more alert. Also the feet look really goofy, the bone lines aren't nearly that long or defined, and the toes need to be separated.

Whistler: Her hand looks like a manikin hand, see if you can make it more fluid and natural. Also you might try for more interesting lighting, whether with cool or warm temperatures.

Jason Rainville: Can't think of any critiques, looks great!

gloombunny: the pose seems unnatural, like she's about to fall to her side.

Big thank yous to paolo13 and Liffey for taking the tie to critique me. I kind of suspected it wasn't right, but oh well there's always next time. I'll still try to make it more chow worthy though, even if it is past the deadline (stupid finals). And I'm glad you like the idea, paolo13. Sorry I don't have anything useful to add, just wanted to say thank you.

OMG, These Entries are looking AWESOME!!!! I am not sure if I am gonna be able to finish on time, I have relatives over and I now have to start house hunting fun fun... I'll try though, perseverance is the best medicine.
And I want to thank all of the people that gave me Crits I really really really appreciate it! It helped my piece out quite a bit so thank you all. I apologize for this being so general but I am in a bit of a rush right now to get out the door.

I will be back on later and hopefully be able to crit and work on my piece a bit.

    final

    Thanks for the comments guys

Paolo13 - yeah, I know about the full figure thing, I suck at drawing legs and I should draw them more. Unfortunately, I was almost late as it is so I had no time to add lower legs. Next time

Liffey - dammit. Saw your crit too late. That hand does suck come to think of it. Ah crap.

Guys, just so that we're TOTALLY CLEAR (as I know there has been confusion, since people seem to think they've already missed it in the thread), the deadline is at 5pm Eastern Time, which is currently in Daylight Savings. That means you have about 16 hours from now to complete it.

Well, it seems we got until monday to post, cool I'll know it.
By the way excuse my french but...I'm french , I'm not quite bilingual.
Just one thing about the fullfigure thing ; is this obligatory or just more appreciated ?

    At this point of the party I will just express what I love the most in the final thread;

Jason Rainville; Incredible light. Very dark and classic character I love it, one of the best for me.

The Whistler; I like the expression and pose, a little like a bored beauty..nice work.

Tokotewhero; That kind of samuraļ is very refreshing (maori style, yeah). And I love your painting technique.

Daestwen; Another favourite for me...Fine outline and great soft colors. And sexy !

    Paolo 13; I like the style ^^

I can't wait to see the final thread of JessiBean, PixelTuner, Reymus, Ithoual and other...

Wonderful looking stuff guys! I don't have time to crit unfortunately, but I'll try in the FINALs when it's done.

Well, started on this yesterday, and I definitely won't have time to finish with 3ish hours left. But, it was an awesome topics so I had to at least put something up.
