    shipping fine art

    hi,
im getting ready to ship a painting to new jersey from san francisco...i've never shipped an original work of art before. fedex says they only insure art up to $500. this painting is valued at $3,000. i'm very nervous about potential damages and losses...anyone have experience in shipping fine art that could give me a heads up on what to do? it is on watercolor paper, so i plan on rolling it and putting it into a tube...i have been told i should double tube it.
any tips on preparing flat canvas work for shipping would be great too since i will be shipping one to hawaii soon as well.....
    thanks so much

I ship hundreds of my pieces a year to my galleries around the country and I use Fedex Ground, I insure the work for the net price I get paid from the gallery. In my case 60% of retail.
Fed ex says it wont pay for art but they have actually reimbursed me for a damaged painting about 8 years ago. I figure if I insure it for the price and they take my money, they have to reimburse if it gets damaged. I use airfloat strong boxes to ship with; they are reusable and better than wooden crates.
    here is a link

Get the ones with the fiberglass and foam there are instructions how to measure for your painting.
Make sure you let the gallery know that you are sending them a reusable box and that if they lose it you will expect them to reimburse you for it.

    thanks dpaint
since fedex only insures up to $500, i assume you go through a 3rd party for insurance?
