Going into visual developement for animation

This is going to sound strange. Could someone tell me in a lot of detail how competitive it is? I dont hear this enough and I feel strange.. Like I'm forgetting. Which is creepy

I'm in university now for an animation/illustration hybrid
Also... in lots of gory detail lol.. what can I expect when I get out of college... How much time should I spend in internships? So far I've had internships here and there but they were more like short-termed commissions. You have to be careful about not getting too many unpaid internships. How do you know when you have enough of those under your belt already?

I'm hoping to storyboard, paint backgrounds, and do concept work..

Also, I know its key to show only your best stuff, But is there anything I should refrain from showing? If I'm really into cartoon character design, should I make sure to put realism in alongside ?

    Lemme know. Thanks
