    My Sketchbook

Hello! I'm new around here.. eek. Also still pretty new to painting in photoshop, although I've painted with oils for about 7 years, and used photoshop pretty extensively for photo editing. Long story short, I had the software, and the hardware (currently using a wacom bamboo) to give painting a jab so I thought I'd have a go...

Both of these were done this week, I was messing around with a sense of depth. I felt it pretty much failed in the pic with the road, because it looked pretty flat, hence the other pic which was actually second.

The second pic is pretty cool, I like the light reflection in the background, upload some more pics!

Hey Whizzardd, I'm new around here too... and I just started painting in PS as well. Nice work. I really like the atmospheric perspective of the second painting. Well done!

That's right man, we all start somewhere. Keep pushing yourself. I'm learning the hard way too. If I can offer some feedback, try adding some dramatic lighting - hard shadows/contrasts are always a good way to make things pop. Also, blocking in a quick background can help define the edges around objects as well.

Thanks a lot, I'll bear it in mind It seems whenever I add harsher tones in I end up blending them out again, without really meaning to. It's quite annoying haha

Looking better! The dark background really helps the face pop forward. Remember to also take into account reflected light. Are you using any reference or working straight from your memory?

No reference at the moment, nope. Thinking about it thought, it would probably make more sense to start off with one at least for the basics. I'm away on exercise with the army until Monday but I'll be sure to have a go and upload at the start of next week. I wish I had time now to be honest, I've had a few ideas about using layers for shading too that I think will probably work better than the way I've been doing it.

Was a bit sick of trying to learn to paint faces, so decided to mess around with some atmospherics for a bit...
