    Chow 192 :: Atlantean Anarchist - HOST : Afekay

    ROUND #192 :: Shila'h Andralzzi, Atlantean Anarchist

    DESCRIPTION

    Shila'h Andralzzi, Atlantean Anarchist

Man or woman, Shila'h is a feared anarchist, rioter, agitator, and insurrectionist, causing unrest and violence in the once utopian city of Atlantis. At the head of a dissident faction called "The coral reef", s/he is an obscure figure, renowned for being an excellent orator and a crowd manipulator. Without going into a Manichean description, s/he is neither nice nor bad, just an idealist living in an environment of idealists, from whom s/he doesn't share the same conception of "perfection".

Special Thanks to Afekay, Winner of round 190, and Guest Host this Week!

    Extra Note from Afekay!

"The purpose of the topic is to focus on the psychology of a character. Shila'h is living in "perfect city", but not the way s/he wants. We all have a different conception of an ideal, there is no good/bad things about this. S/He's a leader, but you may know only very few things about her/him and her/his life, that's what I called an "obscure figure". You can portray her/him alone, or arguing with her/his troops, or taking part of a fight, etc. Is s/he a noble? A folk? Part of the politics? Atlantis is legendary city, you can imagine it the way you want: ancient, contemporary, futuristic, it's up to you.

I voluntarily choosed to let some parts of the subject open, I judged that it was yet enough restrictive."

    SPECIAL WINNING PRIZE!

Round 200 is coming up soon, and to celebrate it we will be granting the winners of the next few rounds their chance to host chow! You'll be asked to supply a topic for the chow after the poll for your entry is complete. So, the winner of this round will choose the topic for 194.

This will continue until there is a host for 198, and then 199 and 200 will be the lead up to the new queen and the new queen round!

I always envisioned Atlantis as a city very similar to ancient Greek civilization so this is kind of a cool topic IMO and I'd like to try I think. That being said I'm trying to understand part of the brief:

"s/he is an obscure figure, renowned for being an excellent orator and "

What is the meaning of obscure figure? Someone of small stature physically? Or a character who is not necessarily rich and/or well known until the scene we're about to depict brings them to the forefront of the anarchist movement?

I wish there was more of a physical description we can go off from. Right now the brief is open other than attempting to portray someone who can work the crowds.

Giving it a try this week.... Trying to get that 'rebel icon' feel to her... the face of the rebellion, strong and beautiful, but not the brains of the operation.

    Something like that.

Since Afekay didn't specify, I'm currently very post-sinking Atlantis right now!

Looking good everyone! Its a great topic. Congratulations, Afekay!

@Niva: This is just me, but I don't think they meant to use obscure to refer to the physique. I think its more literal, referring to their character as being dim, mysterious, not cookie-cutter. Or as Merriam Webster would put it, 'Not easily understood.'

Couple of sketches. Started with the colour one and realised how messed up the anatomy is.
Got some references and sketched out the next two.

    Which one to go with?

I am leaning towards the last one as I want to keep it simple (not bite off more than I can chew like I usually do).
    Thoughts?

(sorry about the dodgy sizes...its late and I cant be bothered fixing)

Carnifex - like the stance - powerful but understated
Kittymeow - lovely sketches, I like the second 'action pose' one
Kisou - Nice pose as well

I'm going to do a pre-sinkage version. nice topic

Kittymeow84: I agree with Angel - the more active pose carries a little more character to it. Something seems a bit off about the arms and shoulders in the current sketch though, kind of hunched.

    WIP:

Assuming the original historic setting with Atlantis on the verge of sinking...

Shila'h proposed as a Joan of Arc figure, driven to hysteria over the idea that the constant rain threatening to drown Atlantis is a clear sign from the gods. Though the city is regarded as a utopia by it's own people, Shila'h is certain that the gods are displeased and fast losing patience. She wanders the streets preaching and scribbling messages of anarchy on the walls. An increasing number of people are beginning to listen to her rants about blaming the corrupt leaders in charge but will her followers be able to take action before it is too late?

    >_>

Shila'h wanted to be a man... So I let him. I hope I can achieve that cool painterly effect I've seen so many of you do... First stage:

Hi to all. I have not been drawing for a long time, but these days I have enjoyed the daily sketch group, so I was thinking of giving this a try. I still have problems using the digital media, but if I do not try I will never receive the feed back that I need to improve. I will try to keep it simple...like small steps at a time. Ciao

    Hi everybody!
Letīs see if I can finish something this time! Iīll do my very best, even though I have a bunch of work to do...

@kisou: Hey, thatīs pretty sexy! She wonīt have to talk much that way...

@Carnifex: I love the masks! That was my first idea, too. I also like the greek-looking patterns, and even though itīs just a sketch yet, I can feel that personality!

@daestwen : Do I really have to say something? I lover her nose.

@kittymeow84: Pretty nice so far! I like the idea of keeping it simple. Maybe adding some tribals to the face to make it look more native?

@Missile: Itīs so great that you actually made up a story! Pretty nice work so far!

@Pixeltuner: Really cool! How long did that take you? I like the colours!

    @NoShot: Thatīs energy! Love it!

@AzureLure: Nice work so far! Maybe she should strech her right leg more, sheīs a little in danger of falling out of balance.

@ Tres_Chic: I instantly fell in love with your style. Iīm gonna stalk you from now on.

@Paolo13: Great idea! I love that suit!

Iīm going for some kind of cyberfishsamurai-style. Makes no sense but hopefully looks cool in the end.

Well I had this idea of a woman anarchist who is publically crucified, but while on display she starts speaking and incites the crowd into an outright revolt. The crowd overwhelms the soldiers who have crucified her and reach up to take her off the cross as she's screaming down at them all.

Here's a sketch I made in GIMP to start off with. I know she needs to be fixed, I'll work on that if I have time.

Really fast sketch, was working for hours on some other ideas but didnīt really like them. Trying to go for the modern kind of anarchist, like the joker from batman or the guy from V for Vendetta. Real simple atm, mainly for pose, gonna add alot more naturally, and make it obvious that itīs atlantis, cause i can see that might not be too clear yet ^^

    Wonderful starts everyone!
This one is so outside my norm, so I'm going to give it a stab... so just some sketchy ideas right now. I'm leaning towards the second one, but advice/feedback etc very much welcome!

Thanks everyone for the tips!!! I went with popular consensus and started on the middle, more dynamic pose. Feeling much better about this already. Colours are neater too.
I know the legs are a bit long/arms too short but meh - I will leave that for now.

Will also add details like the coral in the hair plus tribal tatts (scarification even if I can pull it off?) soon.

I'll take the time and do some crits for peeps tomorrow cos I've been slackie on that front and it's not fair to not give back

Let's see if I have what it takes. First sketch, posing and getting the feel of the body type.

EDIT: Aaaand the second phase of the sketch. With the first one, I thought I'd put him in some kind of tavern of sorts, but now he sits in his house probably plotting something, or writing a speech.
