    Another day at the Office

I've been kicking this one around a while and finally got motivated to finish it when I saw this months image challenge over at Gnomon of Dante's Inferno. I got inspired for this one a few years ago driving down a wide open country road just east of the foothills between Boulder and Louisville CO. In the middle of blistering hot August day, a couple of road workers were filling potholes and touching up the asphalt with these long propane torches. It struck me as a sort of vision of hell to be out on such a hot day dressed in protective gear and torching a wide open, heat rippled expanse. Anyway that vision stuck with me for a while until I've finally purged it this week. I kinda want to start all over again from scratch as I feel like there's a lot of problems but it was liberating to do something not work related (so rare these days). Anyway thanks for looking

This is awesome. I like the nonchalant attitude of just another day at work. I think you really nailed the mood of your described highway workers.

That's a great piece of work, really well executed. Agreed with stinky's comment above, the characterisation is fantastic. Although, had they been UK roadworkers they'd all be in the cab of a truck on (another) tea-break.

Stunning piece, can almost feel the heat!

I like how satirical this is, this guy is just causally burning people while listening to his ipod, really great work!

I love the fact that he has a stogie in his mouth - just to add to the heat and smoke!!

Looks great, Ray. I love the natural look of the fire storm behind the main character.

Wow! Nice work! Good concept. But I wouldn't want to be that man doing that job. And great on the details. Was he really wearing an ipod or is it an added detail from you? =)

espaki: Thanks Nate! I've been diggin' your work too man. Your figure studies are growing by leaps and bounds.

goilo: Heh! Yeah I think second hand smoke is redundant in hell! Thanks Goilo

    Larriva Art: Thanks John!

ArchDesign: Thank you! I don't remember if I saw headphones on them or not. In any case, the earbuds idea hit me pretty early on to really give it that extra punch.

Hi there - it was good to meet you the other day at figure drawing. I quite like this one - it's the guy's expression that really sells it. The iPod is great too.

(BTW - I also took a look at your sketchblog and none of the images seem to be showing up. Clicking on the spot where the thumbnails usually appear on blogspot pages takes me to a Google server error page. Maybe it's a network thing - I'm at work at the moment.)

Take a look at my series of in-depth critiques, like this one of Salvador Dali's hidden portrait of Lincoln.

Scott's Sketchbook: Check out my sketchbook. Will swap C&Cs.

Thank you Scott. It was a pleasure to meet you too and nice to be able to put a name to the face... As for the blog I think google was having some server problems earlier because it seemed all blogspot blogs were having trouble earlier today. See you next time!
