Im back for more.
After 3 years of whatever its been. But hopefully this time its gonna stay (my others werent bad efforts though i thinks ).
A little run down, im now 21. This means im now in the second year of university, im studying Illustration at University College Falmouth in England, and its awesome. It also means i have about 1 year to get good enough to get a job - which i plan on doing, and doing well.
So.... lately im trying to do studies as much as possible, i do life drawing in Uni and do projects and stuff. But im trying to get into doing work outside of uni as much as possible, and posting daily.
So. Some photo studies ive done the last few days. Trying to work on brushwork and style a little bit. And a few other bits and pieces.
I really appreciate some good crits. See if you can find holes in my work in general (overtime). Problems you might see reoccurring etc. Or glaring issues with any of my pics i guess.
Ill be posting back soon no doubt. Its nice to have an outlet for my work, so ull see more, especially when i get some printer ink so i can use my scanner. The fact that my printer stops me using my scanner when i dont i have ink - is an entirely different discussion.

A few other little bits and pieces i found. that ive done recently.
Work for an information illustration project i did about World War2 and some background work for an animation me and a friend did.

This is some really nice stuff. I'm glad you are back, not that I knew you from before but you show lots of promise and are an artist to watch. Keep up the work and you will definitely get where you want to be.

Another study of the day and an oil painting from life.
I was working on my animation visual development today, just doing lots and lots of thumbnails might post that up at some point at the weekend. When i have my finished characters.
My hellboy comics came today,
so its Mignola Inspiration day
Youll probably be seeing some hellboy in my animation drawings from tomorrow. haha.

Some more bits and pieces from tonight.
Im gonna finish up my 2 animation characters tomorrow, so ill post those up with some thumbnails for sure. Probably a study too since i didnt do one tonight.
As youll notice, im all over the place. I do ALL kinds of crazy stuff.
Which also reminded me i need to get into some ID stuff, vehicles and guns and stuff.
Adrian Smith was my awesome picture i found today.

These are just some of the thumbanils and design stuff ive been doing for a little animation i came up with.
Its about a robot and a homeless guy that live on the roof tops of Paris.
This is about 6 of the 15 or so pages of designs i did.
Im not super happy - but i learned A LOT about design, iteration, drawing stuff with variation and all that. It was worth it.
Im gonna colour up my final characters, and do some backgrounds. And then study time i think

Ok so todays work.
I finished off designing my two characters and then put them together in a little colour rough. And my Work In Progress of my first of 2 'shots' so to speak.
The two characters are gonna be in the foreground of this one.
Theyll be in the next one too.
Also when i did this, i had this idea of the style i wanted in my head - especially using the square brushes for rooftops and walls etc. And obviously bright colours for it being an animation. Anyways it got me thinking about an image i saw a while ago that was like that.
It was by Brun on Gorilla Artfare - and it turns out it influenced me a lot. Mine turned out similar. Although his stuff is a million times better.
So thanks go to Brun i guess for inspiring me i guess
Second environment and this one finished for tomorrow. And i definitly need to do a study tomorrow.

Sweet sketches there! Those Moebius styled ones are great!
I also like the bunker piece a lot! You could try to push the depth in your environment pieces a little maybe, playing with soft edges, atmopsheric haze etc.

I wrote out a post. and then CA crashed out. So my post got lost in the nether. So god knows where it is, all i know i have to retype it. So im gonna be brief - cus im annoyed now.
Koinoi - thanks bro.
Sickbrush - yes, im alive and ready to go.
Hideyoshi - thanks for mentioning that, its something that happened alot in the image ive been working on. Was having lots of problems with atmospheric perspective and getting stuff to overlap etc etc.
I had a hard time, but i got it a little better, not a lot though. ALL THOUGH, i did learn a shit tonne - like i should probably consider it from the beginning more. not think about it right at the end.
I didnt get to do my second one, but i learnt alot from this one so...
My shitty final, and a Nude i spent the last hour doing instead of sleeping which is 1 brush,1 size only (well for 98% of it).
So now ill be late tomorrow morning for my crit-session in Uni cus im a sleeping bitch (i need my 10 hours!!).
Also ive been looking at Sammy today

Bendragon its funny you should say that. Half way through this painting, i was like, damnit if i had a more defined light source, everything would have much better clarity.
I had a tendancy to go for dramatic sort bloomy light sources.
Anyways environments is something i always used to like, especially landscapes.
So im gonna try reeeaall hard to get back into them and take what i liked about them years ago (before i did a 3 year binge of making sure my characters stopped being horrible, im about half way) and work up some new enthusiasm for them - along with some ID stuff too
Lots to do and so little time.
The other environment for my animation.
Just looking into parisian architecture and some nice viewpoints with all the nice light below.
Realised how important planning is. There are a million different reason why this painting is not relevant/wrong for my project. Like the buildings, its not dirty enough, not enough tents/more criss crossing in the composition. Not Hobo-ey enough etc etc etc list goes on.
Hopefully ill get used to planning my drawings out much more.
Its probably not safe how much i LOVE JAIME JONES - i want his babies.
I think i need to get better at seeing stuff i like and going OOOOO i wanna do that. Hopefully admitting that will help me get better with focusing on what i really want to do myself (still dont know what that is yet though).

I had a full day of life drawing, all 6 or so hours of it, it was awesome. We were trying loads of different stuff today though, mainly pushing the figure in a more imaginative way, like people were doing caricatures, adding costumes and pushing the figures size and shapes etc etc
Was very fun, learned a fair bit i think, but my work wasnt great, so ive got only got a few of about 15 i did.
Starts off with a Blind Drawing, so no looking at the paper. Then some normal stuff then just experimenting with size and shape etc.
Id show more but my shitty camera cant handle it very well and photoshop barely helped with these ones.
This, just because Andrew Ley is so awesome.

Good to see you posting again Andy! Looking good, your work has definitely improved a lot. Im enjoying the style youre going with for the animation. The colourful cityscapes are quite nice, remind me a bit of tekkon-kinkreet colour-wise. Might wanna sharpen edges a bit more though, i think the characters placed into the environments stand out too much.

Ill be back around for a while this time. I think posting on CA is what i need right now, and hopefully ill be keeping it that way. And hell yes, edges are a huge problem in my work, its like the way i paint dictates i should have NO edge control at all so everything is VERY soft. Its something ill look into for sure. Cheers.

Just a photo study tonight.
I got a great idea for a landscape/environment sort of study that im gonna do soon. Ill explain when i do it hopefully itll help.
My complete lack of edge control is on show now.
It also affects my level of detail to. I find it impossible to do High detail areas, so Obviously my backgrounds and more vague shapes/colours come out better. Hence why the rocks and grass look shit, i kinda gave up working on them.
But i like the cloud/mountain scape. I think im learning about economy alot. making sure what i put down is important rather than just slapping as much down as quickly as possible.
Literally have no idea which picture to post.
All of Sergio Toppi's work is amazing, saw his work at a tiny exhibition in Paris, and picked up 2 of his books. One a comic, the other an artbook.
Scans do absolutely NO justice to his work when u see originals, or even in print.

OK, so my little study/plan i had going on.
Basically i took a Mike Mignola panel i really like from a Hellboy comic i got. And painted it up. I think it works because his work his SO super simple, but compositional awesome and really strict lighting/contrast. The original was about 3 colours, 1 gradient and about 3-4 big areas of black (the near graves + hellboy, and the tower and rocks.
This is an image i quite like, so im trying to think about what i really like about it and take that forward. And push that into my own work. I think ill be doing this sort of study/conversions a bit more - taking others artwork in a different medium and looking how i can learn/apply things into mine in my own way. Like drawings i like - into my own paintings.
I specfically like the sort of 'gradient' painting. Like the way the tower slowly gets lighter downwards - even tho it kinda doesnt make sense.
Also - some little areas of lighting and how he applies shadow to different textures/objects.
Anyways, ill try and find a picture of it online or something, the original. I was working out of my comic in front of me.

Thats a great exercise to try! And you did a good job of it, the mignola look isnt there, but his strong design and composition are.
Edges look stronger, too. Guess he;s the man to look at to practice sharp edges. That dark tower top is something James Gurney mentioned before being an effective compositional device, even when it makes no sense it seems to lead to good design. Something about the dark top against light sky, and the bottom being midtones washing each other out really seems to work well.

But yeh Mignola is really great too look at it. He sort of simplifies his images down to pure shape and composition, and everything else is kind of a subset of those, so its awesome to learn from.
A took a photo tonight and did a paint of it. BUT the lighting was pretty dull and the colours were too. So i moved the light source, and altered the colours. Was just experimenting here with a bit of everything - still working on my use of brushes and my construction of the paint strokes and shapes etc.
Thats probably what needs the most work really. I feel like i have a REALLY bad way of simply applying the marks, so that im building form in the wrong way or something. Its something im gonna try an understand more and then adjust.
Someone ive been looking into is Good ol Tom Scholes AKA IdiotApathy here on ca. I cant decide whether to beauty of his painting comes about from they way he builds shapes (he builds the colour and form conciously by building towards it) or whether it is something that comes about because of the way he applies marks (the blends of colours and painterly look form through the way he paints on a basic level).
Its a sort of conscious/unconscious argument - do u try and force style of painting. Or do you find a natural way of painting, and hope it has some style built into it.
EDIT - Or Maybe im crazy and just thinking too much. Need sleep.

Yeh i know what u mean.
Its a toss up though - i really tend to dislike the usual hard-round rendered to hell concept art you see a lot of, but it seems like one of the best ways of painting in photoshop. I love the use of photoshop, but i like most the stuff that looks the least like its been done in photoshop, haha.
With this one it tried to work in hard brushes to start with and then start to use textured stuff later on.
maybe ill have more later, but theres a party tonight, so that might cut into my work a wee bit

And a little couple days project ive been working on, a book cover.
Book is a collection of short stories by Clark Ashton Smith from way back in the 30s in Weird Tales magazine with HP Lovecraft and Robert E Howard. Its called "The Emperor of Dreams".
The book starts off with a small verse from one of his stories later in the books, which is where the books gets its name.
Just trying for somewhere between a good design based cover - and a good illustration.
Some thumbs - then more refined thumbs - then some photoshop varieties. Im gonna use the last one. But will see how much i stick to it.

The last thumb (the one youre going with) is definitely the best one! Id play with colour more to get it more dreamlike, though just changing lighting could have the same effect. Something I liked in the thumbnails was that the "iris" in the centre was larger, almost touching the edges of the shape its inside of, makes it feel a bit more intense imo.
Cant wait to see where this one goes, always wanted to try a book cover myself.
