Like this isn't what I do every day =P I'll try to come up with something new and interesting. Or maybe develop a specific species for a creature type I've previously invented?

I think this one might be a good one for me to make my first COW... But then again, maybe the lack of themes will make it harder?
I'll give it a shot tho.

Ouch.. this is the hardes topic yet!
I suggest people to really go outside their comfort zone for this one.
Like go do a lot of thumbs, look at things around you and try to approach this topic in ways you usually wouldn't.

I'm a dragon guy. I love doing dragons so thats the first thing I came up with but I won't settle with that.

Me too - I'm a dragon guy myself.

Yeah, definitely gonna do a lot of thumbnails and work to challenge myself with something outside that comfort zone.

So I'm in. Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
    Have fun!

On second thought, how can I compare with the other people who do this every day? My creatures are usually pretty dumb. Maybe my time would be better spent finishing my thesis proposal =(

If you feel you need direction, do what I do in times like these...write down a bunch of words that you'd like to explore, throw them all into a hat, shuffle them around, pick three, and base your design around that; this will give you the chance to come up with random themes you want to explore, possibly adding in a couple that you are comfortable with, while giving you some guidelines.

Wow! Awesome topic here! I've been waiting for this wild card to come up for awhile to not only participate where I can but to go ahead and witness what is on other people's minds and what they will dream up with the creative freedom =]

DefiledVisions:Yeah, I think I have seen a few of your dragons in your sketch book.
And yes, they blow my mind.

I might actually have time to put a little creature together for this round.
Fancy that. But college homework can be a fickle mistress, so I might only get the weekend.

    sketches - PLEASE CRIT

Tell me about which ones seem original or not. I'm really thinking of going with the middle one in the last pic. The upper left one in that same pic might be a juvenile form.

EDIT: added numbers.... haha forgot that part.

Meganite there are some interesting things going on in a few of those, however there are two things that I would like to make note of. for one, if you are looking for a crit on a collection of thumbnails, it's best to number (or letter) each one so the people you are asking can give you a simple answer, such as "number 8 concept"

another suggestion, try creating your thumbnails using a solid hard-edged brush (shape doesn't matter) and just add and subtract from a bit of a profile shape until you are satisfied with where it is. the line sketches for a thumbnail are difficult to distinguish what is going on with them as small as they are. I kinda like the centipede looking ones myself, though. I am not really sure what's happening with a lot of them in the way of form.

Meganite, those look great. Some of them reminds me of this concept art by Peet Cooper for Diablo 3:

    http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/_images/artwork/ss92.jpg

Maybe you can get some ideas from this?

Anyway, I'd personally go with 3rd page's top one, the one that seems to be swimming/flying, with some long membranes or bones or whatever they are, attached to the back.

    >ahem< (microphone feedback sound) Is this thing on?

May I have everyone's attention please?

Ooh! I guess it is on. Great.

All righty. Well, I have a bit of a special announcement to make.

As I am sure many of you have noticed, the definition of the word "Week" in "Creature of the Week" has become rather elastic and unpredictable. I have to admit my responsibility for letting things get to that point. Work combined with life has made it difficult for me to keep up the forum the way it should be kept. As such, I have decided it is best that I step down from my role as moderator of this activity and to chose a new leader I know you are all going to love having as the moderator of "Creature of the Week."

Becoming moderator of COW just about a year ago was really one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me on ConceptArt.Org. I really enjoyed my tenure here, watching young artists grow, having seasoned professionals return from time to time to inject their energy into the activity, and bearing witness to everyone's participation in the part of concept art and illustration that I love the most: awesome creature design. I want to thank everyone who has participated whether they entered or just lurked and voted or tried to learn from the example of what other artists were doing in COW. Creature of the Week is ConceptArt.Org's first and IMHO best weekly activity. And I know the person I chose to be the next moderator is going to do everything he can to continue that tradition.

So. Without further ado, I'd like to announce that the next moderator of Creature of the Week will be:

    scorge!

    APPLAUSE!!!!!

All righty. So, starting with the next poll and the following round, scorge will be cracking the whip and making sure you're all doing your level best to bring your best game to every round of COW.

I've encouraged him to make COW his own baby. You may see some exciting changes in the future. I have no idea what he has in store for you, but under the leadership and moderation of such a talented, disciplined, skilled, creative concept artist, I know what's to come can only bring goodness to COW.

All righty. That's it from me for now. My departure as moderator does not mean you won't see me around in the future. I may even start entering creatures again. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for listening. Enjoy the freedom I've bestowed upon all of you for this round. I figured for my last round, I'd let you guys do whatever you want. Thank you again for being such a wonderful crew of COWboys and COWgirls this past year. I'm looking forward to seeing you all grow as scorge guides you into new frontier.

    Cheers!

    Michael Jaecks

Lookin' cool, guys! I'll probably join in for this round as well. It's been far too long since I've CoWed around.

    Long time no see, JFwalls!

Edit: MJ posted while I was looking at the thread! I'm sorry to hear that you're stepping down, Michael. I'm also sorry that I've never entered while you were the moderator. Since this is your last round, I'll change the "probably" in the sentence above to a "definitely."

    And congrats, Scorge!

Congrats to scorge on becoming our new leader! I look forward to seeing what you do with COW at your fingertips.

Here are a couple of quick thumbnails exploring the concept I'd like to explore. I haven't quite come up with a composition and pose I quite like just yet. I hope to really push my boundaries when it comes to colour.

    Thumbs up

Michael, thanks so much for your hard work! Scorge is going to be a great moderator for CoW I think. I haven't entered too many times in Cow but maybe he will be the first to grant me a star. I know I have a lot of growing to do as an artist, but I think i can get a star (if 3/4 of the people who post decide to go on vacation... you included, Michael)

heh.. thanks again! Welcome as Mod Scorge!

Dude, SCORGE as moderator!? Cool!!! Well, it's probably going to be tough =P Michael Jaecks, it was good to have you as moderator, I wish you luck in the rest of your endeavors. Hope you can join the competition sometime! =)

Mobius 9, that is looking fantastic.

xzacto - I updated my post with numbers this time! Good catch! About the chipping away... I'm not really that good at silhouettes. I've tried it before, and it just doesn't seem to get my ideas flowing as much as scribbles do. Maybe I'll try it again with better results sometime. Sorry my sketches aren't more decipherable =( They're supposed to kind of be open-ended at the moment, building from nothing to something.

Si Swe - great work! I like the second one, definitely. It's really hard to tell what's happening in the first pic, but the caption is hilarious.

Mik - thanks for the ref! I'll see what it inspires me... yeah I really like the kind of sharp angled insecty thingies. Now that I've numbered them, do you mean number 26? I have a cool idea for how that one flies too... Gotta find my notes. But I'm seriously gravitating towards 28, with 37 as a juvenile (aquatic) form.

I really want to make this pic very science-illustrationy. Like a record of an actual creature that you'd find in a book somewhere on an alien planet. Perhaps complete with alien text too!

Thanks for the comments, y'all! Keep 'em coming! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with =)

Sorry for the watermark, I'm using this picture also for my blog.

I started doing some basic shape silhouettes:

Number 1 is meant to be some sort of sea centipede with long membranes attached to his body.

Number 2 is… I seriously don’t know what it is, actually. Maybe some sort of flying creature with a long head, like a hummingbird.

Number 3 is a long and thin creature with a head similar to number 2 or a seahorse.

Number 4 is some sort of flying creature (even though I didn’t paint the wings, they are meant to be like many insects’ wings, translucent). Small legs and membranes hanging from the bottom area of the body.

Number 5 is completely different. It’s meant to be a very heavy creature, sort of like an elephant. It has some horn decoration and on his back he has dermal plates.

After I’ve decided on one ‘theme’, I will create some more silhouettes and then work from there.

I like the look of # 1 and 5 the best. I guess because they're fairly substantial. That brush makes it a bit hard to tell outlines and form though. (I really don't understand how silhouettes are supposed to give a better idea of form... I guess people just see things differently. Maybe I just fail at seeing things in silhouette )

Edit: OK I tried it... I had to try it. I think it turned out well. I refined some of the previous concepts, at least the ones people said they liked, and came up with this:

Where do I go from here? Which numbers do y'all like?
