Beautiful. I like how you've painted the sunny canyon contrasted with the shadowed mesas.

    Thanks Larriva,

Yes, the warm and cool contrasts along with value distinctions were the inspiration that day. It's an amazing place!

Nice - I might push those distant mesas/far rim back by bringing up their value. Maybe find some reflected light in the shadow masses too - but maybe that's in there and the photo just loses those. Nice to see though - I'm jealous - only time I've been there I wasn't a painter yet!

    Hey Jeffx99,
Thanks for the comments. I can see from your avatar your an outdoor painter as well.
Yes, there's a very cool hue/temperature shift in the shadows reflecting the sky but it doesn't translate well in the photo. If I'd had time to noodle more I might have attempted a little more work in those shadows... I was just happy to get "something" in the little time I had!
Looks like your in N. Ca. I hope you'll get a chance to go back there to paint. It's an amazing place, I wish I'd had more than just an hour to spend painting there.

I hear ya! Yeah - love painting outdoors - I'm pretty lucky here as I'm surrounded by a lot of variety from the Pacific Coast to mountains, high desert, etc. I switched my website over to my contemporary work this past summer from my landscape work. I'll check yours out!
