Oh no society expects me to act like a normal person and spend the evening with my girlfriend instead of being an misanthropic shut-in who complains on the internet about what everyone else is doing!

    Oh no!

Yeah, it's Chinese New Year in Hong Kong at the moment, as well as the rest of China.

Anyway, here's a Valentine's Day anecdote from yours truly:

I had a big crush on this girl in High School, and instead of buying half dead roses from some school entrepreneurial service, I went to Hong Kong's flower market in Prince Edward a few days before Valentines day to get some really rich dark red roses. I gave 6 of them each year, for 3 years, every Valentine's Day. At a party hosted by a mutual friend, a friend of the girl I liked said she was "crazy about them" (The roses). I felt good.

Then later that night she kissed and possibly slept with another guy that I know.

    FML.

"Never regret thy fall from grace, O' spirit of Icarian flight, for the greatest tragedy of them all to face, is to never feel the burning bright"
Believe my lies, for I tell the truth about them. Or would you rather me lie about telling the truth?

    Jake, Bucky's got a point.

    1. you're putting expectations on yourself that you shouldn't. I remember when I felt lonely because I didn't have a gf, and I remember being jealous of friends with girls, but I never felt like I wasn't living up to social expectations. I just figured, "that's how the cookie crumbled." Life is random, you can't just expect things to happen at a set time in your personal life. Just be a good person and your life WILL get better.

    2. You're complaining about being single, meaning you want a gf. If you want a gf you need to be attractive, meaning you need to form a strategy for being attractive. first step - COMPLAINING ISN'T ATTRACTIVE.

    3. If you're feeling bad about yourself, maybe it's time to stop thinking about yourself. Try and look around and see if you can't make people around you happier - like your parents, or classmates. Stop thinking about yourself and see if that doesn't help you feel better in the end.

Now all we need is disembowelment via ritual seppuku and we're all set for a nice cozy evening by the fireplace!

    Sex > Love.

Use your heads, not your heart. Instant gratification. You got's other shit to worry about, that you can't instantly gratify - like artistic progression.

Happy Valentines Day go get laid. (and then draw her naked.)

BF and I are enjoying the day by being sick together and taking Tylenol Sinus. Pretty romantic! We use it as a stupid excuse to get each other something we were going to get each other anyway.

He surprised me with the collector's edition of Bioshock 2. So, now I'm going to get him Dante's Inferno. Then we can both play each others games ;P

Yes, look at the couples, in a few years, some of them will get married, a few years later they'll have kids.
Meaning they went for what they thought they wanted.

But most people do these things out of convention, not a genuine want for the things offered, do you really want a family of your own, kids to look after, etc.
Or is there something else you want?

    Either way, you'll suffer.
Having the family, the kids and so on, means you have to spend time with them, or ignore them to still go for the profession you wanted. Meaning you either end up with an estranged family, lots of short relationships or a job that makes you want to shoot your head off every day, which you keep because you have a family to support and very little extra time for self improvement and probably die sooner due to the financial stress of having to take care of others.

Not having the family, kids, etc. Means you might end up regretting it, probably will end up dying alone except for a few friends, will miss companionship except in animals. But you'll have time to chase your dreams, be able to do pretty much whatever you want and have to worry much less about money.

Can't really have everything unless your parents are already rich, in which case, there will be other problems to deal with.

I preferred having less problems with money, more time for myself and found that no relationship was worth having to kill myself mentally and physically in a dead end job over. I much preferred having time to think and develop what I know. All this while still retaining hope that one day this might all change, as is life, but not likely as I'm not really what people would consider a empathic person. As people mostly claim they see no soul behind my eyes.

It's also possible to have a mixture of all this, spend a medium amount of time with your family, become average at your dream and that's it. Takes a very settling attitude, nearly defeatist, to achieve this, but it is possible.
Going through life rather than living it, making sure everything is balanced. Like a checkbook. Never knowing true joy and excitement of having to make the hard decissions, but also never the true depression of losing something vital in life.

So it's best not to judge others, they made their choices, either through ignorance, euphoria or determination, but they will also carry their burden eventually.

Making them all part of the human experience, which is suffering, lightened by random bouts of joy. Until they wear out, leaving nothing behind but continuation.

This is a little off-topic, but I think it shares a common thread with valentines day so here I go:

Has anybody here ever drawn a picture for somebody you loved, who didn't love you back? Or maybe, has anybody recieved some sort of gift (like a drawing or painting) that really had lots of time and effort put into it?

I want to draw a picture for my ex because I don't think that she ever really understood my feelings for her. Basically, I'm asking about the emotional reaction to a gift like that. To my head, its obviously a terrible idea because, while there are time, effort, and feelings behind it, I feel like a painting or drawing is akin to a materialistic bribe (oh, you didn't like me before? How about now with this nice shiny painting!?). Not to mention you put the reciever in a very uncomfortable position. I think I watch too many movies where that kind of stuff happens and it all works out; In real life, i really have no idea what kind of affect such a gift would have. Is it just the movies, or can such an expression of feelings (or love, I guess) in the form or something like a picture really change a person's mind? I see myself going through all of this and in the end getting a reaction similar to "Oh, WOW, this is amazing and im absolutely flattered. but it does nothing to change our relationship. sorry."

also, if I did do this, I'm not gonna whip up something in a couple of hours and give it to her by the end of valentines day. I just thought this question may be necesssary here, given all the nature of the holiday.

I gave a girl I loved a drawing once and she lost it. Then she tore out my heart and ate it. Ah well. I've done more drawings since then.

Response you're looking for: Ow, it's gorgious, I'll dump the new version of you right away and go back to the original.

Most likely response: Oh god, there's that emo artfreak again, what is it this time? Ow.. a painting *awkward silence*... how nice, please, please go away.. I dumped you for a reason.

No girlfriend? Think about it. Less trimming thorns off of roses at a florist. I've actually done that several times and by the end of the seasonal job I would have hands that were a bit scratched up.

So it's not as bad as you think.

Gifts in relationships to me, have these meanings. If the person already loves you, its icing on the cake. But if they have no attraction/love, they may appreciate the gift but it won't change their minds about you, they might even feel guilty for accepting it if they know your reasoning behind the thought of giving.
