    Denman Rooke's Finished Works

The Sea is my Mistress started as an early sketch idea for another project that ended up not being used. I liked the initial idea behind it a lot, so I developed it further. As a simple portrait, to give it character I decided to narrate through facial expression and to cause the viewer to question the ambiguity to this man's demeanor.

I like the concept behind the idea of the piece, the man really does look like an old sailor from way back when. You did very good on this piece.

The lighting, color, and sense of age and personality make this a great piece. Very exciting for a piece without any dinosaurs or spaceships or hot babes!

Great piece! The .gif is really useful, you changed it a fair bit from it's birth. I think you captured the age / wear-and-tear on the character's face perfectly.

Here's the most recent finished painting I've done. entitled the Escape.

the Escape was done in photoshop, approximately 11 hours. This painting was done in greyscale first, then with color overlays, and then re-painted overtop in color. Looking back on it now i should have just started in color, but hey what can you do. I'm learning here and there what methods I prefer over others. This piece is mostly imagination work with a little environment reference. I really enjoyed playing with the colors and environmental mood of this piece, and I think it came out relatively well.

Here's the HD video from start to finish. Compressed to just under 15 minutes for your viewing pleasure.

Nice piece. I like the movement throughout, especially in the cloak - and the facial expression is great too.

This piece was done for CGHUB's 2D drawing jam. The brief simply being "zombies". 9 hours in Photoshop.

And here's a link to the time-lapse process video.

Not so much of a fully composed digital painting, but some finished character concepts none the less. I was thinking 19th century Irish fishing town. Possibly for use in some short stories in the future.

Beautiful stuff. The forest thief/rogue is a real standout to me. Might have been a round about piece but I think its better for it. Love the lighting and color in it.

Great work!! Love the contrasting or complimentary colors you're using in each piece. Great color choices, too!
