This is why we can't have nice things.

    http://www.pe.com/localnews/menifee/...2.414bdf0.html
" After a parent complained about an elementary school student stumbling across "oral sex" in a classroom dictionary, Menifee Union School District officials decided to pull Merriam Webster's 10th edition from all school shelves earlier this week.

School officials will review the dictionary to decide if it should be permanently banned because of the "sexually graphic" entry, said district spokeswoman Betti Cadmus. The dictionaries were initially purchased a few years ago for fourth- and fifth-grade classrooms districtwide, according to a memo to the superintendent.

"It's just not age appropriate," said Cadmus, adding that this is the first time a book has been removed from classrooms throughout the district.

"It's hard to sit and read the dictionary, but we'll be looking to find other things of a graphic nature," Cadmus said. She explained that other dictionary entries defining human anatomy would probably not be cause for alarm. "

I...just don't have anything to say.

You know, they've got a point. I know it doesn't matter, and kids that age already joke about such things. But, it'd be nice as a teacher to not have these kinds of words for kids to look up and snicker about while I'm trying to teach. And it's always the one snot nosed jerk, guffawing, while pointing at the definition to the sensitive girl who always get angry about it. As a teacher, it's just one big headache.

The vast majority of what schools get for kids isn't age appropriate, or education appropriate...

And I'm not some nutter who complains about Hary Potter or anything... I just think it's not too much to ask for a Webster's school edition, especially considering the man Webster was very religious and would never want kids reading about oral sex, dirty sanchez's, or reach arounds.

Dirty Sanchez and reacharound aren't in websters or any other dictionary I know of (except urban dictionary).
I'm not sure about you but when I was in school you weren't to be flipping through any book while the teacher was talking. Looking through the dictionary for funny words was for work time only.
Seriously you would have to omit so many words in order to stop kids from flipping through and laughing. Please enjoy my list of ones I enjoyed as a kid:
    Cock
    Bitch
    Prostitute
    Sex
    Anus
    Asperger's (ass burgers)
    Hoe
    Mucus
    Erotic
    Vagina
    Sperm
    etc, etc.

It says that the kid stumbled upon it but what if a child had heard it from a classmate and was curious what it means. Would you rather a kid looking up oral sex on the internet to find out what it is, because I don't think they would get a medical definition.

traditionally, in that situation, a kids ask's their parent who calmly says they'll learn when they're older. Then they get the dirty kid in class to finally tell them.

I learned what sex was from my mom when I was in elementary school but I did look up numerous cuss words in the dictionary to find their meanings... Anyone else?

I remember during religion class i would ask our teacher about the dirty stuff in the bible, like "what does it mean when it said that Lot's daughers "laid" with him?" and questions about Onan, and why he had to die.

I learned about sex from porn.

    seriously.

Reminds me of when I was 8, I gathered with a couple of friends during group work, and we looked up ass, sex and penis in the dictionary and laughed at it instead of doing classwork.

Oh yes, let's all freak out and ban the dictionary where kids might actually learn useful definitions from all just because they might learn what oral sex is. This is retarded.

I remember laughing at the word dictionary when i was 8.
(Dick)tionary. And then looking up a bunch of word

But seriously, taking it out of the dictionary won't solve a single thing. It's such a minor problem. Kids looking up kinda naughty words, in the dictionary of all things is not the highlight of smutty stuff kids can do. If anything it might broaden their vocabulary along the way.
Just you wait for, or the latest rumour of how sally blew on jimmy's pa-shling-shlong, then you'll have to ban their vocal chords.

Although I do remember hearing about something with kids as young as 5 getting sex education here.

Maybe we should put Oral Sex in other text books if it gets kids to read them.

Let's hope this isn't the future for all countries then. Thing is, is if you asked these fools to explain clearly what the problem was, they wouldn't be able to. It's some sort of schism in the thought process that causes an illogical, kneejerk reaction, mmmkay? I mean, why do they not suggest the word "murder" is taken out of the dictionary? Murder is worse than oral sex, surely (unless you're doing it wrong). And "kill", "rape", "maim", "stab", "steal", "suicide" and "mutilate" are not something you'd want children, or indeed anyone, to indulge in, yet nobody's clamouring to remove these words. Not that I remotely agree with the removal of any word from the dictionary, the whole idea of censorship of knowledge is abhorant.

So that's what gets me, this swelling endemic of wrong thinking coupled with the equally disturbing ascent of these lefty do-gooders, many of which now hold positions of high power. Scary as hell, especially if you live in a country like the UK that's suffering at the forefront of this madness.

First of all, to be fair to the left, it's mostly Christian groups that are against sex ed. Second, just to add another dimension, imagine being the teacher who actually explained what oral sex is, to the confused kid. His parents could complain and then the teacher's out of a job, and has to explain what happened at his next interview. They could even start a trial and call you a sex offender - That's America. An art teacher in Texas was fired not too long ago for taking kids on a field trip, where someone saw a statue of a naked man...

That's true, there's also the blame culture. Anyone can sue anyone else for the most ridiculous of things and it gets to the stage where people and establishments start taking steps to reduce that risk. I was astonished to learn recently that many schools here have a policy of closing if the weather is cold and it's icy. That's shutting down completely, for days, because of ice on the paths, ostensibly for the safety of the children but actually because if a kid slips then the schools could be sued by greedy parents. Equally culpable - and perhaps more so - is the institution of law which facilitates this idiocy.

When you combine the blame culture with the risk aversion, the puritanical censorship and the do-gooding lefty brigade it all adds up to a very sorry shitfight indeed.

Which reminds me, I read yesterday that an employer here in England was told by a job centre they couldn't advertise for a "reliable" candidate because it discriminated against those who were unreliable. Apparently the staff member who enforced the decision agreed it was ridiculous but said it was policy, to avoid being sued for discrimination by lazy people. No joke.

That's... ridiculous. It's essentially saying you can't put any qualifications in job ads because it discriminates against unqualified people. Now I don't know about anyone else here, but when I'm getting brain or heartsurgery done, I want the person who's gonna cut me open to know what the hell he's doing.

    "lefty do-gooders"

Baron, nearly all censorship in the US is the result of right-wing conservatives or fundamentalist religious freaks. Maybe it's different where you are, though I would politely ask you to give me some examples, but here, anyone using the term "lefty do-gooders" in situations like this presents another impression of the speaker. In fact, the most telling part of your comments is the constant repetition of this rhetoric...
No position or belief, whether religious, political or social, is valid if one has to lie to support it.--Alj Mary

I'd just read about that. I've looked up oral sex in the dictionary as a teenager. And yeah, I was like "OHMAIGAWD?" but guess what?

I'm 20-fucking-years old. I haven't had any form of sex, and I haven't even kissed anyone. So there.

Also, try looking this stuff up on Wikipedia. You'd probably get visuals. I rather have a child look up a word in the dictionary instead of using the Wiki/Google.

By the way, if a child looks up the word "Murder", would that make them murder someone? What if they look up the word "Marriage"? "Hurt"? "Spank"?
