P.O.W.! Challenge 37: The REALLY Bad Date...

P.O.W.! Challenge 37: The REALLY Bad Date...

    P.O.W.! Challenge 37
Deadline: Sunday, February 14, 2010, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

    Topic: The REALLY Bad Date...

We're back to our regularly scheduled programming after a nice interlude dealing with the niceties of covers, so something disgusting is called for. The title says it all--the date from Hell. We've all had them, and for some of us, we even got married to whatever showed up and spent a part of our life looking for lethal weapons to end the pain. The subject IS a bit limiting, but I think you might be able to have some fun with it if you think about the possibilities of WHERE, WHEN, and WHO to the extreme. (Hint...doesn't have to be two humans...or even TWO of anything...)

You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color. We're also going to stick with the (almost) three-week Challenge period for a while because it seems to be giving people a bit more time to play.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a TENTATIVE maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts.

REMEMBER: You don't have to have a complete comic to qualify for polling--if you're idea requires six pages or so, go for it, but if you realize you're running out of time, try to get at least TWO finished by the deadline. That's all you need to qualify.

    Standard Comic Book Size:

    --Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
    --Live art area: 6" x 9"
    --Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

    Good luck.

Again, this one is three weeks rather than the usual two weeks to see if it will allow more participation or just cause a lot more procrastination.

P.O.W.! Challenge 38 will be posted on Sunday Midnight, February 14, 2010.

    ************************************************** ***

A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...

Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

    Noiion!!!

Yeah, sorry. 3CH went out not with a bang, but a whimper. It's either this, or daily sketch group now.

    HI.

I'm new to the POW challenge. Here's my first work in progress. This is a layout sketch for page 1.

Any comments and criticisms are welcome.

    X3LT, nice start...

Guggey...same here on RL material to pull from, but it would end up as a disaster piece rated XXX for violence...

Okay, so I'm going to give this POW a try here. I wrote a script and started to sketch the layout and suddenly there was 7 pages and front cover. A bit ambitious I think but I'll try to finish as much as possible. Since I never tried my hands at a comic before I have a initial question: I was hoping to fit a dialogue with four bubbles for each girl on the first page, will that work or will it just be too much?

X3LT - Looks good and makes me want to see the rest. The superhero might look a bit too Superman-ish...but maybe that's just me.

Actually, there's no real limit to how many images or speech balloons that will fit on a page except legibility and ability to recognize the characters and what's going on. If the copy is necessary and HUGE for that page, rethink editing it down to a conversation that goes over to two pages.

    Ilaekae: Thanks!

aRKaycreative: As for your lettering question, I agree with everything Ilaekae said. It's hard to balance the art and story elements sometimes. I look forward to seeing your pages!

Here are inks for page #1.

Alright! Here's what I got so far. I'm going to go with a sort of straight ahead gag where the reader is listening to her (or his) date yammer on with some ridiculous and offensive dialog. That way I can focus on the acting and dialog.

Alright! I got all the pages drawn and inked. Now all I have to do is letter it and decide if I should go with color or black and white. I started to hand letter the whole thing but I'm still not very good at hand lettering. I'm inking with a some Rapidograph ink on this and I'm loving it. I usually use speedball ink - mostly because it's really, really cheap - but the Rapidograph stuff is the bees knees!

Thanks noiion. I'll second the 'looks like I went over bord'... This is a good lesson I'm learning here and should probably started out doing the minimum 2 pages since I only have about 10 more hours to put into it.

Should I just try and ink as much of it as possible or complete fewer pages but add color?

All you need to go to poll is TWO pages finished, either as B&W or color. If you have unfinished pages that continue the story, I post them also. The two pages don't even have to be the first two, but there should be some indication of where you're coming from and going.

Everything seems to be going well...thank you, all...

    Just a short note...

On last Tuesday, we ended a record snowfall that destroyed everything here, including every power and communications line that I'm connected to. Since then, I've been without lights, heat, net access, and anything else that was electrical. Power was finally restored about 2 hours ago. Because of this, i may be a bit late posting this poll, BUT I will have a new challenge up Sunday if nothing else happens. I also have crits to finish on the covers from POW 36, which i should be able to finish in the next couple of days if everything holds together.

Oh...and never take a deep breath when you open your fridge for the first time in five days after a power failure... EeeeeeeEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW...

WOW!! Lots of great entries, guys. I'm not quite done. 2 more pages to finish up. I'll use these for the entries. Will post the final pages in a bit later. Funny Waterbird and I have a very similar idea.

Anyone who needs a bit of time should be aware by now that i don't start gathering the poll until around noon Monday on my end...cough cough cough....
