    Chow 187 :: The Celt

    ROUND #187 :: The Celt

    DESCRIPTION

    The Celt

    Two Week Chow!

The Celt remembers very little of his homeland any more. Though he was fifteen when he was captured and sold into slavery, his memories of his time before Rome are so few and so fleeting that he wonders sometimes if he merely dreamed them.

His home, for the last ten years, has been the largest ludi - or gladiator school - in all of rome. And he, their prize pupil.

Though maybe once he railed upon his captors, it has been a long time since he has thought of any other way of life than the sword, the bow, and the chariot.

For the last three years, he has been an Essedari - a war chariot fighter. His chariot is his prize possession - even if technically he doesn't own it. He has spilt so much blood onto it that it is closer relation to him than any living person on the entire planet, and he loves it enough to prove it.

Though he often fights on foot, especially for the one-on-one battles, he and his chariot are now so famous that Rome would be devastated if he did not at least use it as a backdrop for every battle.

Today, outfitted in all the splendor his keeper could manage, he fights for the emperor himself.

    Note:

This does not have to be a historically accurate chow, especially since there are no pictoral references for the Essedari. So keep to the spirit, but you don't have to keep to the letter!

Quick question, how historically accurate should it be? Realistically believably roman? or hydra stomping warrior man-beast? I guess what i'm asking is how much leeway do we get with the armor, weapons, and chariot and chariot-puller design?

Ok, here is my entry, I did not get to finish the Archeologist so I'm taking a whack at this one.
Took advice from my previous projects and tried to make a more fluid pose.

    This was my first Idea...

    Finaly to a final concept...

I will work more on muscle tone tommorow.

    @Cruton89

You don't have to post WIPs at all (except in the finals thread), but it's always nice to do so.

So we can do him as a gladiator, or a legionnaire, with or without chariot right? I like the openness, I'll try to think of something.

Sweet topic! I always been fascinated by ancient rome and everything about it, I'll try and join this one atleast. I took a quick look on the net on the Essedari and this is what I found:

History, Facts and Information about the Essedari
Gladiators were divided into different classes according to their weapons and fighting styles. There were strict rules and protocol surrounding the fights of gladiators. A gladiatorial fight would usually involve two gladiators but similar types of gladiators such as the Essedari, would not normally fight each other. The first Roman Gladiators were prisoners of war and used the weapons and equipment characteristic of their people. The early enemies of Rome included the Samnites, the Thracians and the Gauls (Gallus) and gladiators were named according to their ethnic roots. This changed over the years and the names of the different types of gladiators reflected their combat techniques such as Secutores (chasers), Bestiarii (beast fighters) and Retiarius (net fighters). Gladiators were always clothed and armed to resemble barbarians with unusual and exotic weapons and their fights depicted famous victories over barbarians and the power of the Roman Empire. The Essedari gladiators get their name from the light two-wheeled chariot of the Celts and the Ancient Britons led by Boadicea.

Definition of a Essedari - Weapons, Armor, Fighting Styles and Opponents
What type of gladiator was a Essedari? What weapons and armor did they use? What was their style of combat? And what type of gladiator was matched as their opponent?

    *

Definition: The Essedari ("war-chariot fighters") fought from chariots and on foot
    *

Opponent: The Essedari were primarily charioteers who fought in battles in the arena which reflected the warfare of the Celts. They would have played interesting roles in battles depicting Roman successes against enemies such as Ancient Britons led by Queen Boadicea
    *

Weapons: This type of gladiator fought with a heavy spear called a medallion which was a 6ft long thick wooden spear reinforced with an iron point.
    *

Body Armor and helmet worn by this type of gladiator: The Montefortino Roman helmet adapted from the Celtic helmets and decorated with a crest
    *

Shield: A flat Oval or Hexagonal shield

Wow, Lord M, that was super useful. I was going to have a whip be the primary accessory, but a spear makes a lot of sense. Maybe I'll be able to work it in.

    Thanks for the info!

Sounds like a great topic, but also a very hard one!
A legendary warrior, his chariot and his (presumably) horses. Ow man, I've got to research horses. Or can he have his chariot pulled by, say, minotaurs?
I think I'm going for the full Monty on this one. Only 1 way to see if I can do it, which is to start drawing!

good luck all, I'm curious to see what everyone comes up with.

Here is an initial sketch, don’t think i will go for historical accuracy on this one

Herr_Oin Nice studies looking forward to se more
no_toast Welcome! , very nice colors and composition. But the pose might look a bit awkward. Maybe the angle of the feets direction is to wide, they are almost heel to heel now.
Also when the shoulders goes one way the hips tends to go the other way, contra posto

    Hi all

    Herr_Oin
Good sketches. Very thoroughly studies with the armor.
    no_toast
Good start. I think you can define where the light source is, and define the shadows.
    Jager
I like the style and the perspective.

I also have a question. Wasn’t it always two persons in the crew on those war-chariot, one steering and one fighting. I don’t think this will change any design or its just my curiosity.
    Here my wip

    Herr_Oin
i like your research on the outfit. Maybe include some headwear?

    no_toast
like the desert ambiance. Maybe you can show us a hint of who or what he is spearing?

    Jager
wow he looks very strong! and mean...

    JanJager
very nice sketches of the face, it's got a good roman feel to it.

    Wiggers
He looks very confident (and probably rightly so
One little thingy; maybe show a little bit more of the inside of the shield? it looks a bit flat like this.

OKi here is my wip, shoot!

    Sweet going, guys!

Herr_Oin - Great ideas in your sketches. Seems like you are going for something Germanic-like. I like it!

Wiggers - Good pose and good idea with the fallen gladiator, oh and is that Russel Crowe?

Jager - Intresting. It looks promising.

Ok here's my brainstorming, and with horrible anatomy because everything is off - but I can comfort myself with that this is not the final piece. I tried to go all realistic-historical on this one, researched essedari, patterns, ornaments, armour, different Montefortino helmets, spears and whatsoever. It came down to this. I kinda wanted to give him an "heroic" look since he's the favo-gladiator of the arena, so I went with a fully white outfit, and added a red crest to the helm (which essidari's had), then put on a roman ceremonial cavalry mask. Thinking about giving him a white chariot with white horses. Gonna brainstorm that and then I will go for the final piece.

no-toast-Nice colors and stance, great reflections on the armor

JanJager-Nice scene to look at, and I really like your helmet design on the right

Jager- Nice style, looks like a pretty tough guy

Wiggers- Great details, I love it

Gemsie-Nice perspective, also really love the sword

    mongreldesigns
-My favorite part is the armor going over his shoulder, I want to see what this looks like further along too

Herr_Oin- wow, great detailed armor designs. The full body sketch looks great too

    Lord_M
    - Best helmet ever. everything looks intricate and very neat to look at

this is something I started doing, then wasn't going to do, but then started working on it again. Not sure if I'll finish because I really don't know where it's going.

I'd like to keep this pose but is it concealing too much of him?... will i get disqualified?

JANJAGER: Love the choices... really fits with the brief.

JAGER: Can't wait to see the final!

Lord M: Great approach to the armour!
