Colors in open canvas. (I Kinda butchered this wonderful lineart, but I'm trying to learn and I suppose practice is the only way.)

    new guy

My first time posting to this site. This is my first real color job. I have used photoshop mostly for Photo manipulation & scanning my 2d work.

I am a freelance inker working in comics, currently. Before starting in the comics biz I worked as an Architectural Illustrator. Most of my skills are traditional 2d. I did use 3d studio viz & photoshop some towards the end of my days at the firm. In the next few months I will try starting a web sketchbook, but in the mean time feel free to check out my web page for othe works.

finished another one. this one went much faster and I am much more happy with the end result - although I think that I need a lot of work on the whole "glowing eyes/alternate lightsource" thing. learned a lot on this one. thanks brkofdon for the lines!

Just couldn't stop with this one probably about 2 hours off and on, it was lots of fun I think because lots of new insight, methods and all together learning was accomplished.

Thanks again to brkofdon for even more excellent lines, look she's got your name tattooed on her arm! . . . She's all yours bud !

@faB , I love it! Very cool, the subtle differences in how we interpreted the face are amazing. It seems we also decided on pretty similar light sources. I thought about clothes but it wasn't as creepy to me lol. OH OH! I just noticed the nails (fingernails)... I wish I had thought to color them too, perhaps the shade of her eyeshadow or hair would have complimented it nice...sigh. Cheers!

Comments and Crits are most appreciated!

    Cheers !

    My (d)evil-looking brother !

    Hi,

Here's a sketch i did of my bro. Slighty exagerated his bulge eyes and, no he definetly wasn't born with horns, believe me or not : i added them.

P.S : sorry for my english...

I loved that the lines for this were something very different from what I am used to. Went with a very simplistic approach because I didn't want to detract from the linework.

@Idiot Apathy: thanks! I like your take as well. I think you got the jaw better, I did change her expression somewhat . I think maybe you put a little too much blue on her breast compared to her shoulders/head (I also put too much value on her breast, was too lazy to go fix it in Photoshop). That's a pretty good idea about the hair/eye color! I'm trying to pay attention to edges and in retrospect the hair I did first, seems too graphic and sharp compared to how the rest turned out. Thanks for the comments.

A Quickie before work about 45minutes, so bit of a different process for this one. Concentrated mainly on the colors and form, I dunno.

*New Media Coloring Book Vol. 2*

Thanks for the excellent lines rdelattaignant, was fun and good practice.

In retrospect I think there was a goatee wasn't there?

@faB: Yeah it definetly turned out a little to blue, but that was the color scheme I had decided on, it just worked out that way. I wanted the emphasis on the face because it seemed to be protruding towards us a little more. Yeah hair is soooo hard... I need to find some good tut's. I think if you had added one more highlight color to the sunny side of the hair it would have looked great with the rest of your picture. brkofdon has a really good technique on that picture doesn't he? Cheers.

Thanks all, off to work !

I like the tones you used for the skin, it's very different from mine (see picture). I like the blue tones and the modeling. The hair could have been worked more, as you said. One good method is (with PS) to put some color lines of different colors, and then you work with the "finger paint" tool (don't know the name of that finger-like tool in english...). It is especially a good technique with long hair. But for short : chose a small brush : two or three tones : a dark, a mid, and a light one (or one color with three different fusion modes : normal, multiply and add). When finished : highlight with a very light color (white or pale yellow, for ex).
Here are my colors (done maybe in three hours). Comment and critics welcome.

As Pulp Fiction is one of my favourite films i just had to do the Travolta puppet, but always if i try to color something in painter i end up trying out nearly every single brush...

brkofdon 's cutie, sorry after all the painting and learning the expression is not quite the same

I used guidance from one of Don Seegmiller's tutorials in his book "digital character design & painting". I used Don's brushes & the same color scheme as the tutorial. Basically I followed in his steps but used brkofdon's sketch.

I havent found a good way to get rid of/paint over the pencil shading that is in many sketches here, and some sketches here are very very cool, but I'm too scared to paint them, too many details

Nice one faB, I've heard a lot of talk about seegmiller's books. Do you think that they are worth getting? Have they really helped you? How much was it?

    Thanks!
