Some really nice stuff in that last update! What stuck out for me were those two pics in green line in the top right of the first page. I like them because theiir faces veer away from the style you're comfortable with, and i think taking detours like that stimulates inspiration and motivation. So challenge yourself! Do environments! Full illustrations! Weird shit! Try stuff you're dead sure you could never pull off in a million years!
Hope you're doing fine btw, reading them last couple of posts made me a little worried :o

    Lovely cartooning as always man

Like the real world studies and stuff.

TBH I think this is what you should push more, like the actual painting and rendering and stuff. The photo and life studies are best for this, really learn photoshop/painter/whatever, learn the brushes, effects, tricks.

I think it will really bring your characters to life.

    Keep it up

I like your style. The characters look very dynamic. Your figure studies are coming out great. But cant ever get enough of those so more! The collab painting came out good, althought rendering of the facial features of the left dude is kinda confusing and also the girl at the right , her torso seems larger than the legs. It is suddenly shrinking around hips.

Great stuff over all. keep drawing

cody_huston: thank you so very much for the kind words!
Revidescent: cheers! hah, about the heads, i think its been a lazy style choice that have come crawling on me since i just suck at drawing faces so much but i been thinking about that since i saw you pointing it out, trying not to draw that way, caus i really see the long faces now haha x)
walnut: cheers! glad you like them! i do try different styles alot but i throw them away caus well..yeh, im a bit stuck in my little comfort zone here *shame on me* ill definetly try more of it! i have nothing but excuses to why im not doing more challenging stuff, i try enviros now and then but throw them in the garbage...
and im fine, really! just feel stuck and dont know where to go in life atm... there is just no jobs for me here in the industry i want to work with but i dont know what else than drawing i can do... and i cant even draw good enough to get a job, dfgdhf, so yeh, i just feel... stuck!
AlexTooth: thanks alot! im trying this painting stuff more lately but its soooooooooo frustrating, i cant get a grasp of it! gah! but i will keep struggling with it haha, hopefully ill understand it one day! :p
sin eater: thank you so much! yeh that collab was my first time trying a more painting style and faces is still my biggest weakness so i fucked it up im practicing them faces tho!
Ricardo Robles, PeopleEveryday, BlitzWing, midknight523:: thanks guys!

phew, thanks you guys so much for taking your time to stop by here!
your feedback and support is mucho appreciated and keeps me going alot of times!

anywhos, not a very productive week..a few doodles and studies, trying to paint more but it makes me angry! any advices on how to paint/render is very appreciated!
the 2 colored characters is art trades over at deviantart and the colored one with 2 characters in is me trying to some sort of...background or something, but very sloppy

lifedrawings from march are looking super slick, really loving http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1333819307 as well

your strongest stuff is still the looser and expressive sketching, play to your strengths and bring some spontaneity into your finished pieces

    Hey!

    You have such nice linework,
I think that you should try to incorporate that into your painting style some more.

I am not going to pretend that I know a whole lot about painting,
but if I were you, I might try something like this.
I borrowed some of your line art and traced it for the example, I hope you don't mind.

    Name: ArcherRumplestiltskin.jpg
Views: 430
Size: 156.0 KB

Start out with a color block in, it generally should be pretty midtoneish..

After that, I would use an overlay layer to mix my shadows,
different tones, (like cheeks and lips), and highlights.
But I would generally paint them on with a normal layer.

You could just use a normal layer if you are confident in picking a color you know will work. I am not always at that stage yet..

That is pretty much it, then it is just playing around until it looks right...

When I paint, I go through LOTs of revision stages,
I will start with a sketch and fiddle with that until I like it,
and then do that at every stage usually..

It is a pain, but it is the only way I know at this point to get things sharp and looking right...

    Other things...

When painting, it is really important to mix up soft and hard.
I suggest using a fairly hard brush and using opacity to blend at first in a painting.
Then, if you need something smoother, you should use a soft brush sparingly.

Light source and shadow color... I looked over this for a long time, but eventually it becomes super important...

    Blah, blah, blargh...

I have written too long, and I don't know if any of this is helpful..

Please ask questions. I would be happy to try to answer..

Please make me as good at line art as you....

    EDIT,
oh I forgot to mention that i really like the psycho two toned girl and the blue people in the long image!

invinciblewombat: thanks! i wish i knew how to do that ...
greyskill: much love for that reply! thanks for the tips! im gonna practice mooooore on painting, will have to try draw up some lines for that, i always get so impatiance with lineart tho hehe

derp, not so very much this time, just some sketches, trying to explore my style a bit more...

also did some skeleton and muscle studies, and i think alot clicked for me doing these, unfortunatly many of them is a bit wrong proportion wise caus i drew with a pen to not stop and focus on perfecting it, but just to do it!
im moving over to the legs next!

    blazingdimensions: thank you!
    PeopleEveryday: haha glad you like

here is a little update, i been lazy with the studies, my life is horribly varied when it comes to drawing mood, i really badly need to get a job ><
also talking to a psychiatric or whatever its called once a week has my mood swinging more than i like...

anywho, 2 colored drawings, i tried to paint it but kept the lines this time, i just find it so hard and ugly when i try to paint over the lines... i just make it look messy and dirty :/

also a little less cartoony style... i have been concepting for some friends little secret project and they didnt quite want my usual cartoony style, so i guess i got a little stuck in more realistic after that x)

Blaaah reply got eaten. LET'S TRY AGAIN.

I still love your gesture style, it's got so much energy.

The page with 6 drawings on it from post #371 - I really love the bottom 3. Not sure if it's your more realistic ones (they all still look pretty cartoony to me, tbh) but the style is super appealing. The horned woman's arm is a bit wonky, and her head's a bit large, but it's a great drawing overall, and the girl hugging her legs is just fantastic.

Oh thank goodness, all the Fenris.

I agree that your gestures have a really good energy to them. You were a VFS student, right? My friend, Laura, was too (also animation.) So jealous of that program, it yields very talented artists.

Anyways, I like the treatment of the Hawke/Fenris pieces.

Your animation page was looking vacant so I scurried over this way ^_^. Good to see you've been keeping busy. Lots of fab gestures going on there, You get some really nice volumes with your pencils (or chalk?) in 373.
I also like the little details you put into your characters, sandals, belts, buckles and whatnot. As much as I would swear on you if I had to in-between them ^_^.
Just be careful about skipping extremities. You might want to do a block of face, hand and feet studies to get more comfortable with the structure. It's clear that you have control in the longer poses, but they get ambiguous or ignored in the quick studies.
Gestures are amazing at pointing stuff like that out. - I've got a date with the neck, myself >.<

    Happy sketching!

This variety in poses and gestures is really stunning. Maybe you could differ the physique of your characters a bit more? But nevertheless such a dynamic energie to every little sketch, love it!

You keep studying, i like that. Also, this last page has filled up with some nice pictures, that last new character has potential. Keep on trucking and don't worry about something looking like crap, it means you're probably close to breaking the ceiling on your current abilities. How it is for me at least ... Anyhoo, keep on trucking!

thanks for your words on my sb,

    great gestures!

on your studies i see you defaulting to your stylized faces, or omitting them completly,
you can draw that style of face from any angle so try and mix it up,

you are omitting alot information about the face/head
suggest the eye lids, the depth of the eye socket, the actual form of the lips, and don't rely on just lines to describe those forms, but value.

this will help you alot when you go to paint.

Been too long, I haven't read all the text but went through the art and beautiful lines and dynamics as always - nice with the graduation film and gl with the free time between this and work (unless you have already found something).

    o lycka till .
