View from the Tallest Building On EARTH

Click the link below to view a video filmed from the top of the Burj building in Dubai. It is already the tallest building ever, and has yet to even be finished.
The view is astounding. It shouldnt be LEGAL to build that tall:

Uhh ... I must confess that it doesn't impress me at all. Everything seems yet a bit smaller from up there than on the other already freakin' high buildings. So what?

Hah, I want to visit Dubai some day; their architecture has been going in some real interesting directions.

Yeah, that building is pretty cool. You can see it from my cousins' house(and indeed from almost anywhere in the city)! they were still building it when I visited last December, but here is a sad little snapshot I took....

Dubai doesn't actually have very much oil left anymore. That's why they're spending so much money building a tourism paradise on the back of slave labor.
They're going bankrupt, and what I saw of the city while visiting actually reminded me a lot of what Miami looks like right now during the US financial crisis. (I'd say both cities have similar problems) There are A LOT of empty skyscrapers sitting half-finished with giant rusting cranes over them.

The builders and investors dumped a lot of money into construction with the "build it and they will come" attitude except the expected rush of tourists never really came, and now they're left with a bunch of empty world-class architectural masterpieces in the middle of the desert. It's a little creepy and dystopic, really, and I always thought a similarly multi-layered city would make a good subject for a concept.... hmmmmmm

That's a huge problem with many upcoming tourist destinations, they always gamble on the anticipation of people visiting, in Dubai's case they deserve the fallout because they went overboard with spending and did not think of the cost if these projects fail.

Their financial trouble is really bad news, since the world financial networks are all connected, the loss of investment from all that real estate, low/no leasing of those buildings, low tourism revenue, it could cause another disaster in the near future.

That is a cool find. The need to invent auto window washers now. (what a waste of water in the desert...)
I'm always keeping my eye open for insane skyscraper images to add to the world building ref book. Needless to say dubai has a high representation....

    Beware of dark post

beautiful tower. Unfortunately Dubai is no place to visit unless you are a war criminal. They have a bad reputation for abducting labor and sex slavery. Women should NEVER travel their. I don't want to sound racist, but that country is run by some fucked up people.

??? US is the richest country in the world with great security, but if you're a tourist who landed in one of its worst cities, you wouldn't think that. just saying there are different sides to everything, what you're saying might be true but remember you dont live there and you're seeing only certain sides of it. its not the defacto definition of Dubai for everyone over there.

I am a young woman. I traveled there for about a month and lived in an average part of town away from the hotels and expatriot neighborhood. I walked around by myself all the time and was not abducted/raped/murdered. Yes, there is a huge problem with slavery and human trafficking there, but there is also a huge problem with that in the US! Human trafficking is incredibly tragic, but it's a big leap to say that women should NEVER travel to Dubai or anywhere in the UAE.

You know what I did jump to conclusions. It was just the side of me that reads the paper speaking. For now I'll just shut up about it, before I get myself into more trouble.
