Cafe Sketches and Other Tasty Morsels

Greetings to all. In this sketchbook I'll be posting a variety of sketches dating from late 2007 to present in relatively chronological order (oldest first). As you'll see, I really enjoy drawing people of every shape and size and character but you'll also find me posting more diverse subject matter from time to time.

If it seems like there is interest from the community then you can expect regular updates for many weeks to come.

Comments and Crits. are always welcome. —ENJOY

Hey awesome posts, very cool head sketches, loks like you capture them very well, and digg that you're using ink. Keep it up.

Yeah, in a sense. If you've ever tried sketching people in a coffee shop or public place you'll know that people don't usually hold still for very long. Occasionally I'll find someone reading or working on a laptop holding relatively still for several minutes; but usually it works out that I get about 30 seconds to a minute to try to absorb as much visual information as possible before I "lose" them. The result is imagination based on real life, you might say.

    More sketches

    Attachment 873275

If you see people holding boooks in any of my sketches it's likely that I did them at the library. The library is also a great source of free models.

These are a couple from life. Isn't it great when people actually hold still for a little while?

This one took about 20 or 30 min.
    Attachment 879438

This one was about 50 min. The girl on the bottom is actually a dwarf. She looked rather manly so it was
difficult to convey that without making it look like a man with long blond hair.

Thanks for the kind words, derss. Those profiles were all done from imagination, if I remember correctly. I plan to post some more from imagination in addition to the cafe sketches.

I found these hiding out in an old sketchbook and thought some of you might like to add them to your mental encyclopedia. Just exploring different ways to create value and texture with pencil and pen. I hope the files aren't too big.

These are pretty much all from imagination. I thought I would throw these up just in case anyone was disappointed that I didn't post any "real" art in my last post. Hope you like.

Traveler, wow, I really love your faces and they have a interesting comical feel to them. Caricatures of sorts. You could definitely go to an art fair and do caricature portraits - have you ever thought of that? Those people make like $8 - $10 a portrait. Well I really like what you've done here, and that 30 min man is fabulous. The squiggles idea on all the variations from light to dark is absolutely a good thing to do for training your hand eye coordination. Keep these coming. I do portraits too, but now I'm getting some new ideas. Yes, the library is a great place for drawing people. I've gone to the library on campus where i go to school and drawn people, but I haven't done as much as you have and you have inspired me to do lots more. Thank you. Pce.

danlucas: Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. I'm happy that you like the SB so far. More to come so stay tuned.

Thanks also for the money making idea. However, at present I'm not in it for money. I'm just interested in art as a universal language.

Keep drawing. My cafe/library sketches have really gone a long way in helping me improve; but I've found it's good to balance those out with more focused studies as well as drawing from imagination.

    Traveler,
I must say that after looking through this compelling sketchbook you truly inspire me with your portraits. You have an incredible perception of and mastery in the capturing of personality and character in everyone's face and their demeanor. You bring out the soul of each of these individuals that you've sketched, making them comical and serious at the same time. Keep updating this sketchbook! Cheers.
