Ooo, I really like how your stuff seems to emerge from the page. It's all has this nice foggy look to it, with the pencils and such. They come forward in space.

I do agree that your contrast is a bit of a problem. I have the exact same problem, too. Something that helped me (if you aren't much of a art instruction book person) was to study artists that are notorious for high contrast work/paintings like Caravaggio. Or only give yourself black, white, and a two greys to work with. Try to make a composition that way.

You have everything else going for you, though. Compositions are great, anatomy is fine. Really nice collection of work.

Thanks for commenting in my sketchbook. I suppose you're a Ghostbusters fan. It seems like your draftsmanship and color are your strengths but getting good value ranges in your paintings from imagination is a weakness. You obviously know how to achieve good value ranges as most of the copies of photos indicate you just don't appear to be applying it as well when drawing non-existent stuff.

Presuming that you are using photoshop, do you create a layer to turn everything to grayscale in order to check your value ranges?(adjustment layer>solid color>choose absolute black> select saturation from the dropdown menu in the layers palette)

Tex McCranie- You got me, used to watch the first film every other day when I was younger. And thank you for the critique, that is definitely one of my shortcomings. Just scared to push the values, which is stupid whilst using photoshop. lol And no, I do not use a grayscale layer, though that is a very helpful tip, thank you. haha.

Using ref. photos helps also when drawing from the imagination. I hate doing it but I've started to force myself to look for real life things that approximate what I'm trying to get down. It's a pain but it makes such a difference. Quality takes such a dive when I don't know the realities of what I'm trying to paint.

Study them, maybe draw them then put them aside. As long as what ends up in the final is yours and not just disjointed copying then it doesn't matter. Everyone has their own process but that is quickly becoming mine. Get idea, thumbnails and scribbles, research for references, further thumbnails and scribbles then go to final.

I'm sure I'm probably saying things you already know though.

I think I wanted to be a Ghostbuster when I was a little kid.

Tex McCranie-That is a process that I am also familiar with. Iian McCaig used a similar process, he would draw from his imagination then if got something that didnt look quite right, he would then do studies of that particular issue on separate sheets of paper. After that, he would apply what he learned to his original drawing. Definitely one of my favorites designers and storytellers.

Wouldn't it be great if that were a serious profession. haha

    n1frit-

Hey guys, just a few progress shots for today. A commissioned piece, pieces really since she wanted two of the same portrait. lol

The middle photo is actual values of the pieces. The third photo is a little dark.

A lot of issues thus far with likeness to one another, but I'm confident I'll be able to get it there by the end. Oh and I'm using acrylics. Doing it in washes, trying to get the darks up to where they need to be before adding the lights with washes of white. Wish I had had a larger brush in the beginning to put down the base coat. Ah OH WELL! haha

About 3 hrs in all on the paintings, about 30 mins on the drawing.

What I like here is that you have some very interesting character and
creature designs, and you are very good and precise with your environment and
perspective drawings/paintings. It’s always a pleasure to visit someone’s book
see the improvements after years of study and practice, you were persistent
and determined so you kept alive your sketchbook, your diary of artistic
evolution. Maybe the stars will clash, maybe the universe will collapse, but
this book here stays for a long long time. Newcomers will visit and will
learn a lot from your progress. Your traditional drawing skills just got
to another better level, and I really like the environment painting above,
the guy standing with a lantern in the woods. As a suggestion I would like
you to do more value grey-scale studies and add more color variety to
that lantern piece, just throw a color layer over it and try to go wild.
There is not a single thing that can stop you in the future,
cause you are destined to be a concept artist and to
    deliver stellar and marvelous art.

really like the top right thumbnail in post 186 and the bottom one with the ship too. Do you have more finished work i can look at? In post 195 I think you are missing out on a lot of hue variations that could be really nice. I'm also having trouble understanding the narrative based on his stance and expression but it's only a sketch so i'm sure there's a lot more you were planning to do to it.

    JakeB-Thanks

LtPlissken-Thank you for the suggestion and for the kind wordsXD

    jondawo-Thank you sir

KyTran-Thanks for the tip, was planning on adding some color variations The narrative, lets see, was thinking of Skyrim for some reason when I painted this, and when towns sent bounty hunters after me, the expression on the guys face is the same that was on mine when those hunters attacked me. Since they didn't know what they were getting into hahaha. lol

More progress shots of the commissioned pieces and a few sketch pages Must draw more!!

BRIDGMAN WOOP WOOP! Looking sweet in here. Your characters look solid.
Really liking the feel on the lantern guy. Maybe try and push the depth more, try and make it more intense.
If I'm reading it right the guy is about to be pounced on.
    Keep it up!

I'm a Lady ÖöÖ°! But you can call me Sir, sounds cool

pretty cool thumbnails here. You have a pretty good feeling for colours I think, don't be afraid too make one them bigger and work on details. They look so cool, and so delicate, lika a very good, easy way to draw.

Hey man, You've gotta an awesome sketchbook here! Love your designs and rendering as well as your Bridgman Studies (Inspires me to dust off my copy and study too haha) The only critique I have is for your guy with a lantern piece, I feel you could push the mood and atmosphere more, but that's about it Anyways, I'm looking forward to what you post next, keep them coming!
