Progress shots from the last post. As you can see, it went in a little different direction than what I started with. lol
By all means, its not finished, but I like the sketchiness. Any C&C welcome and most appreciated.

Messed around with one of my old pieces a few pages back. Tried seeing what I could do differently to make it a better piece. Funny how much your workflow changes from year to year. The original image is on the bottom.

Always interesting to tackle old pieces like that! I think, however, that both suffer from the same problem--value. Both have essentially uniform value across the entire painting, in the old one the whole thing is a middle value and the new one the whole thing is a middle-dark value. I'd punch in a few more values into each, and control where your values are placed. For example, in the new painting the creature and the archer and both nearly the exact same value as what is behind them. Choose which one you want more focus on, then put a lighter (or maybe darker) value behind them so their shape "pops" out more. the eye will go to the place of most contrast, so use that to your advantage!

There are also a few awkward tangents in your new picture. The hand/bow are tangent with the monster's forearm, the arm holding the arrow is tangent with the tree trunk, the arrow is tangent with the branch behind it etc

Can't see that much light in these last thumbs. I can probably see what you're trying to do, but it need more punch. Show some effects that light actually creates. If the swords (lightsabers) glow, show them glowing. Fire kind of light would lose its brightness very quickly, show it with a gradient. Don't forget some rim lights on the fingers, maybe even some sub-surface scattering. Or maybe you've just been practicing a whole different thing about light, then feel free not to read all that.
A good book about light is "Color and Light" by James Gurney. Definitely worth a read.

razz- thanks so much for the critique. I keep hearing about that book, but haven't broke down and bought it yet. Definitely will now though. I have another one of his books though, imaginative realism, also a good read. Probably wouldn't hurt to read that again as well. haha. As for the thumbs I really should have said I was working on my values, trying to incorporate a full range of value and having it read at thumbnail stage which the biggest part of my pieces don't. Thx for the feedback, will have an actual update later this evening.

Looking good man, and +1 for Colour and Light, great book.

The speedies look pretty sweet, but I think you could probably push the depth a bit more. Maybe some more Foreground elements, and some more elements to suggest scale (on the tank one especially).

I haven't done a ton of environment work, so I don't really want to say too much lol, but if you haven't already, check out Feng Zhu's videos. He really knows his stuff, and makes it super easy to understand. Also, there's a ton of them .

Thanks JakeB, I totally agree with you on the pushing the depth and on adding more foreground elements. These are things that I want to get right in black and white before revisiting color. It keeps it simpler that way. lol. As for the Feng Zhu videos, I have seen them all, and I re-watch them constantly, mainly because my brain can't retain all of the useful information provided in those videos. haha.

Thanks Kate. The brush I use is a variation of a chalk brush that comes with photoshops brush presets.

Sorry guys, no update yet. On another note, I'm reading through "color and light", and it is a gold mine of useful information.
