Team CHOW III: TEAM Chönyid bardo!

    TEAM Chönyid bardo!

    We are:

    Snootchy
    Grandmassa Mr. Spect
    Hala

    and JailHouseRock2

    Topic (originaly posted by Daestwen)
    DESCRIPTION

Hello boys and girls! Once again, we saved something special for team chow. This is a liiittle different then what we usually have going on, so please pay close attention!

This month, Team Chow will be attempting to create it's very own Tarot Deck! For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a deck of cards very similar to the usual 4 suited deck, but with 22 extra cards called the 'major arcana'. The four suits are also different : Swords, Cups, Wands, and Pentacles/Coins. In the following post there will be a list of all the cards.

For those of you who don't know much about it, please allow me to send you to a couple of sites to read up on it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot
    http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/

Though often used as a form of divination, we'll be approaching it from a strictly design perspective. Each card is meant to tell a very particular tale (though this tale often depends on the reader) and has many symbols and meanings attached to it. The goal will be to do each card as a character-based (this is still chow) illustration to illuminate the meaning of the card. However, the specific meaning and the symbols will be up to you. We will, however, be following mostly to the Rider-Waite deck, with the exception that we will be using Princess instead of Page.

If you have any more questions about the above, please feel free to ask.

And here are the Rules ::

    1. Your team will choose TWO CARDS per person to illustrate. So, a 2 person team needs 4, a 4 person team 8, etc. This is the minimum requirement, you may choose more.
    2. You may only take major arcana for half your cards, please choose Lesser Arcana (The Suits) for at least half. Bonus points for those who do mostly Lesser Arcana!
    3. You will post your choices in this thread. I will allow 4 teams per card. First come, first serve. If we get all the cards covered by at least four teams each, I will then be open to letting you pick cards that are already full. We want to make sure to get a full deck!
    4. Please make sure that your files can be sized down to 9 cm by 15.5 cm (or 3.543 x 6.1 inches) at 300 dpi. I'm exploring the option of seeing if we can get it printed, so please make sure your work is print-quality, or please write "OPT OUT OF PRINT" when you submit your work so I know you're not interested in having your cards printed as part of your deck.
    5. PLEASE DO NOT START DRAWING UNTIL JANUARY FIRST! Right now is the time to get everyone's cards assigned and start brainstorming, but please don't start drawing as it's unfair for the other teams.
    6. That's it, Have Fun!

    Thanks, and Good Luck!

    Hell yeah!

Ok, so far I've reserved the following cards:
    0 The Fool
    Princess of Swords
    King of Cups
    XIV Temperance
    and Ace of Pentacles.

we still need 3 more, and we can change any of them as longs as there's some left

Next we need to start thinking about themes and styles I think.

    LETS DO THISSSSSS!

snootch wants to do seven of swords so put that one on the list

    ok styles:

you mentioned mucha earlier---i think it wud be cool, and see how everyone puts there own twist on mucha. art noveu in general.

or, we can pull from elements of that---like that style usually has some linework visible in the finished product instead of being fully rendered out---we could incorporate certain techniques in all of our pieces--like line art, or unrealistic proportions (like cartoon style but doesn't have to be cartoony.)

    just some ideas

snootch suggests keeping it real loose this time
and i think that's probably best so none of us burn out

    woot more ideas ppl

ahh we should get xi justice if we can no? edit...someones got it im down fer what evers clever
i was thinking we should do this like a week long chow an be finished with both of our individual characters in about a week an a half the first few days we scramble for design post quick sketches an ideas thumbs silhouettes this should only take a day or two one to draw an one to review then we can add similar elements if needed an what not then work on your finals an be done in a week ,week an half from start this way no matter what we have something to turn in no matter what an we can continue to pull all the pics together share how we used techniques an see if we can learn from each other an combine skills

as a team member this is what i can offer i will make several silhouettes then i will quickly flesh them out an create up to 3 thumbs focusing on design an experimenting with color (really rough an quick disregard for anatomy an the lot)after selections have been made on to thumbs an finial presentation with the focus on things such as rendering an composition

i think aiming to have something semi finished by that time is good
i'll try to do the same (though with family stuff going on i might not get things done so fast but will definitely try). either way
i think disregarding anatomy and accuracy just to get ideas out there and quickly decide what direction we want is good--blake is right. if we get caught up in technique style too quickly we'll stress ourselves out maybe?
    dunno
discuss it more! we still got time till jan 1

ahh shame on me thanks jailhouse hala an snootchy fer letting me be on yer team an thanks fer start'n the page jailhouse we're gunna rock this an hala no pressure we keep it fun an we stay motivated we will succeed if we can get done a week early that great if not haha we still have a week to breath this will really allow us to learn from each other we can show how we got certain things an try implementing each others techniques an so on so we all learn to be flexible

i grabbed some quick pics of random tarot cards fer some ideas some things to keep in mind is that there are markers on tarot cards such as written #s an patterns an even the directions in which a character faces or even weather one eye is open open or not has significance (just food for thought)

right now i imagine bad a$$concept art tarot cards haha

ahh an picking a few cards that are less popular will also help our chances of being apart of the not only the deck but allow for more original interpretation an experiment

It's so great how we all think reasonably alike

First off though, although I'm going to be giving my whole focus and really throw myself at this challenge, I will be starting Uni for the first time at the end of the month so I will be rather busy

    Right, anyway styles:
you mentioned mucha earlier---i think it wud be cool, and see how everyone puts there own twist on mucha. art noveu in general.

or, we can pull from elements of that---like that style usually has some linework visible in the finished product instead of being fully rendered out---we could incorporate certain techniques in all of our pieces--like line art, or unrealistic proportions (like cartoon style but doesn't have to be cartoony.)
So glad you brought that up, I'd be really pleased to do that to, but only if everyone agrres.
I've been playing with some of that sort of style over that last couple of months anyway, here, & here, and here.

    And some more inspiration:
    Mucha

    Joao Ruas

    Tran Nguyen

Yeah, I think we can decide on the theme/style.
And No, I don't think there needs to be a uniform border throughout. But we'll worry about that later me thinks

Nicccce reff by the way Granny, staller stuff!

yea i'm on board with the stylized or whatever, yea it's gonna be a bit crazy i think for all of us so, i'm thinking we map it out like granny stated before with the addition of some tighter deadlines in the beginning as to like all of us pooling in design, sketches, ideas, images or whatever or anything within like 2days and then we'll all like share it or i'll just photoshop everything in one big sheet and email it to u guys and this way we can just like circle things we like out of that sheet and discuss for a little bit then kinda break off and start to work on the sketches based off that; and go back to the timeline that granny had outlined, and definitely think that's a good idea to have something we are comfortable handing in by the 2nd week so that we ain't stressing or going nuts to finish =D

ooh thanks for the images and links, cleared up what a tarot card should look like!

yea i wish we could do this all in pencil shiet, i definitely dig the style Matty, be crazy to do like a whole set with a wes burt pencil render, muhahaha!

anyways, so I'm getting this write anything in white is still available and red is closed?
