aww the bear turtle is cute!!! :]
this one should be worked out proportionally first. the head is far too big if you can see the breasts. the breasts would be lower. also the jawline line you made on her face makes her look like a man. usually the jaw is subtle on women, check out some reference of profile views of women then implement what you study into your piece. never hurts to use ref. oh and her ear is quite high up there. it should be between the eyebrows and nose, generally. hope this helps!

    keep it coming!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments, really appreciate it : )
Matt - Thanks! I admire and appreciate your critique on my sketchbook very much, yeah I definitely need to brush up on anatomy for sure, especially when it comes to differentiating men + women, this lady does look a little manly.. yulch! I'll be more careful and use reference more often.. I work directly from imagination but having an anatomy book or photograph nearby doesnt hurt :p

I'll try to get more work up on here, I'll post the 24 x 36'' painting once its done.. which is like in less than a week.

Little sea turtle character I made up:

Owl Character: This is a 24 x 36'' oil painting that I completed in a little less than a week, the assignment was to convey movement through means of expression, brushstrokes and overall movement of the subject matter/character/individual.. My main intention was for the color scheme/red streak to accompany the emotion of shock/surprise that the owl exhibits. The flip side to the colors accompanying emotion - could be a narrative.

I really love the owl painting! The red really is very shocking, and it comes across well, the mood that you're trying to convey I think. I dig!

Jeremy - Thanks! I appreciate your comment and I'm glad the emotion came across directly to the viewer. the whole point of this assignment was to also convey movement.. which is in conjunction to/accompanies the intense emotions of shock/surprise.. initially I wanted to have rolling hills and clouds that would create a circular composition but the diagonal makes it a little more dramatic and intense which is what I love.. movement!

Yay you're drawing what you love! That's how you progress, in my opinion, faster. Also drawing what you do not love can heighten your skills and trying out new things (ie. paper airplanes, origami, painting on the side of buildings, tagging, etc).

Keep up the flow! Loving it Ash! :]
