    ...Art Drabbles...

    Finally worked up the nerve to start my own sketchbook...you people are so incredible! I've lurked here for years and you all have served as a constant source of inspiration; by posting this I hope to impose only a little on your time and talents.

    Please tear me apart and give me some tips, I would love to improve. I'm going to try to keep this updated if at all possible...if for no other reason than to keep me drawing. Thanks for looking!

    Those last few are pretty quick little doodles, but I figured that's the idea around this part of the site so it's okay...I'd especially love to know about any techniques or exercises I could do to help me develop my abilities, if anyone could recommend some.

    Just me messing around in photoshop a little...I just got it and have never really used the program before, so I'm still working out how everything, uh...works.

    I like the pink underwater creature.

    I would maybe suggest adding some slight hint of color to gray shadings on the beast, or add some blues, purples. There is always some neat color in the shadows.

    Also some slight light on the bottom of the creature. Light bounces from the bottom of the ocean and will reflect on the bottom on most sea creatures.

    Thought I'd stop by to see whats going on here :o. Love your figures, you seem to already be pretty good with a digital medium, and I really dig the griffin and centipede thing. You are painting a bit monochromatic but that's not a huge problem, I'd just say take more chances with your colors! Please update again soon :o.

    Nikkatzu- Thanks very much, yeah I'm trying to force myself to use a single color to see if I can't give my stuff depth in monochrome...also because I'm really unfamiliar with digital painting and I'm a nervous pansy. x) I'll try and take those chances you were talking about soon!

    Had to run home directly after seeing this movie to draw some fanart...no references used, clearly. Should probably rectify that for accuracy's sake next time.

    A: (there shall be no B) You are flattening the forms down by implying his ribcage is concave. Simply by flipping the curve of this line you can make the ribcage full and barrel..y.

    The other thing fighting this image is your shoulder. A shoulder is kind of like a backwards hinge. Both the collarbone and the scapula come together to create a more flexable appendage. Move your arm up and down.
    Go ahead. Really. Do it.
    Your collarbone and scapula both worked together to shift your shoulder...ball. So remember, they connect. (not directly exactly, the scapula has a sort of extention which reaches up and touches the collar bone.) (look at the reference man, he has it going on.)

    Anyways, You need to give your shoulder enough room to... well exist as the larger structure it is, and you need to expand the ribcage a bit, and instantly he looks more dimentional.

    Also try not to get too caught up when rendering muscles, when you use all of your values on the muscle rendering, you don't leave any to sculpt bigger forms.

    you obviously know all of this because some of your creatures are pretty fantastic. Anyways, You seem to get uncomfortable around human/ish figures. Don't get so caught up telling us you know all the parts we have, and just render the whole human animal at once. Same as a dragon?

    Anyways, I'm not a master or anything either obviously. Just some things that help me everytime I have a shoulder or ribcage conundrum.

    "this looks wrong", almost invariably leads to ribcage cave ins.

    Lol i just saw Avatar the other day (sunday) and I really liked that movie, fanart something I wish I could do but no tablet or anything of the sort, the body is ok, but the biggest problem would probably be the face are you doing this from memeory or are you looking at a picture of him? I like the dragon. keep them coming

    batcustard- Oh my gosh. Thank you SO much. This is exactly the kind of help I'm looking for. I can't tell you how much your input means to me, I will definitely keep working at my forms as you suggested. You're right, I do have a big problem jumping into detail too quickly before my base is a solid concept, I will definitely keep a closer eye on that. Thank you so much for taking the time to break everything down as you did, it was very, very helpful.

    Nice work you've got! There are a few things you should really work on though. Anatomy, gesture, and value. Work on those areas as much as you can before you get to involved in color. From what I can see, your colors seem pretty flat and pale...that's where studying value comes in. Once you have an understanding of value and lighting, colors will come more naturally. Keep it up though

    Man, the holidays hit hard--its been a while. However! I'm finding a bit of time now so here's a quick doodle of some futuristic-y landscape. I find that I really don't do scenery often...and it shows. So. Definitely need to practice. I just really wanted to upload something here to prove (mostly to myself) that I am still keeping on top of this sketchbook thing.

    Hey Kasei, I really enjoyed having a quick look though your sketchbook, the colouring and use of value is very good in a lot of your imagery. I was also impressed with your avatar picture as it may not have been completely accurate but you did it from scratch with no ref so kudos for what you created. With refinement I know you'll get a kick arse image for a kick arse film.

    I think the only thing I'd want to see is a bit more refinement in the details, perhaps experiment with some texture on one of the creatures to see if it helps, but great work none the less.

    Hey, that last scenery doodle isn't half bad, it definitely has the best composition out of your sketches. Why not re-touch the clouds a little, and use a tad darker background?

    Hey there, I'm really liking your creatures, especially the red one in post #8!

    echoing what other users have already said; it would be nice to see you push yourself a little more: with textures/details, more colours, or why not put your creatures into enviroments more often?

    Wish I had time to make more detailed pictures these days. Lately it's all I can do just to find a little time I can snag for random doodles such as the following. I wonder if I should just hold off until I have a finished piece? But then, this is a sketchbook...and as my sketchbooks are full of doodles and quick drawings lately anyway, I suppose I have little else to share.

    ...something is better than nothing, right?

    I see you put a lot of work on the face. Its a shame that the front fur is treated the same almost everywhere. You should set a stronger lightsource, and try to make it darker the further it gets from the front.

    Mister Dark - Funny you should say the face looks like it took a lot of work because that part was actually the most rushed and I spent almost an hour on the fur, heh. Learned some things though, I think. And I definitely see what you mean and agree about there needing to be a stronger light source. Thank you very much for taking a peek and for your advice, I think I may play around with this a little more later.
