This never got submitted to the Chow, but I wanted to finish and share anyway.
Nice dynamic shot! I feel it has some compositional issues though, Not getting much sense of depth, I feel the field in the background, could be pushed back more, also the the flaming fireball all kinda of looks 2d rather than giving the sense of it coming from far. The lighting on the character doesn't seem to match his setting, feels "cut-out" and stuck onto the picture. The solutions you will have to work out as I'm no pro - just my crits, GL^^
Ya, I know there are some issues. But I suppose thats what happens when you experiment. I was going for what you see in terms of a confusing play between the foreground and background. But Im pretty sure at this point if my lighting made more sense my experimentation would be a bit more pleasing.
People always remember great images. When using other artists work to practice with and post online, its a good rule of thumb to mention the Artist name. People may assume other intentions.
Aside from using the pose and bringing that arm back, it would have caused the torso to twist more showing us more of the characters back. Sticking to close to a reference can sometimes hinder you from thinking about a pose as much as you could have.
I wanna see Memper do Memper.
Zhang Lu was the first thing that came to mind when I was this, too.

I suppose I should have posted the image. I didnt know who the artist was. Just saw it pages in on a google search. My bad for not mentioning. Yes, I love the painting and copied the pose of the character in the image. Apologies to Zhang Lu.
Here is an updated image trying to wrangle some of my previous issues.
Tired of looking at it and I feel its coming to or has gone well beyond over painted. Thank you for the courteous insight.
