Ah, that's cool. I was thinking mine needed to be a Gandalf-style staff, lit up as a torch maybe (as the Ace is to be a guiding force, out of the clouds and into the light, yadda yadda...). Will add more sketches myself as soon as I have them nailed.
Really digging the energy of the first one. Very powerful pose and her fiery hair and dress compliment the composition well! I do agree about the wacom pen. A sage's staff for instance would suit her better. You could have it drawing in energy which would make her a force to be reckoned with!
As for the second piece, I like the feel of it, too. The two images balance each other quiet nicely! Not sure if using yellow for the smoke atop is such a good idea though. It steals attention from the guy
Ah, nice thought. The background of the woman / goddess-type is going to be cloudy to symbolise her bring light and clarity as she steps out of it. If I can create a clearing in a murky sky from which she is drawing light, it should look pretty powerful. The flow is going to continue through the dress, and I'm thinking of wisps and folds in her dress (probably push my ZBrush skills a bit to make it, which will be good for me too!).
Yeah, I take your point on the yellow also. I was (very sketchily) trying to shed a positive light on the 2 remaining cups, whilst having the figure oblivious to them and still destraught over the spilt. Some internal light, falling on them more subtly would be better no doubt.
Ha! A resemblance. Not the pic I used for ref but having read the brief a bit more I think the character should have flaming red hair.
You're going to incorporate Zbrush into the process? Very interesting! Looking forward to seeing how that will turn out.
I started sketching my Devil card, but haven't gotten too far into it. Just been busy with other things that I'd like to get done before classes begin, but should be posting some sketches soooon!
Yes, I'm going to incorporate some 3D into the cards. I plan to bang together some cups / wands in 3ds Max. It'll all have to be integrated and balanced obviously, but I just find it gives a lot of freedom once certain elements are 'built' to repose if necessary. Bit like sketching in a 3d package I guess.
My office is closed due to snow, so this is what I've been working on this morning instead. The 2 shelved cups will be part glass, to show they are full and to add some interested refraction effects. The lighting will be more dramatic, and all 5 chalices will be a different design - again, to add greater visual variety. I've worked in the 'castle' and 'bridge' symbols roughly aswell, these will probably need accentuating (the stone carving and tapestry).
Cool sketch, though my world could bend to your ideas - not sure on the background as yet but I think it's important to get the main card symbols in somewhere. I was even thinking of making the background completely clouded and having the mountain & river as patterns for the flowing clothing. Not sure yet, open to ideas. I was also thinking about the wand / staff. I imagine a blend of traditional fantasy with the sci-fi lance from the Predator comics / films. Your sketch has got me thinking more medieval halberd. Hmmm... any more thoughts?
I can't find much about the Wands other than they're about creation, summer and fire.. the kind of impressive background you have going should work well I think? Something majestic. Maybe have the mountain range composed less centrally, in a kind of V arrangement around the figure if you get what I mean.
The 9 of Wands is a warrior so it might make sense if your ace had a wand of a different design. I was thinking about an elaborate spear or halberd, but not so elaborate as not to be practical.. I imagine yours would be more ceremonial looking and less used for stabbing? haha
I'll have a play with the mountains today. Am liking the inverted 'V' shape idea as a triangular composition always looks stronger, and will push the character forward more.
Good ideas on the wands, also. I think something extravagent and gilded will look more fitting for the Ace. You may find something that inspires you amongst old Japanese spears for the Nine. They certainly knew how to make weapons, and I've seen amazingly ornate katanas / shaolin spades in the past.
Wellll bad news, my hard drive died last night. I ordered another today but when I'll get it and when I'll be set up I can't say. I've got a check disk going on mine right now and it seems rather fucked. It's no big deal though it's not like I'm losing all my recent work including my portfolio I was meant to send to a games company today because it is the deadline or anything like that, oh no!
