Good idea on making him more beasty! Thanks. I'll definitely experiment with that, and I'll probably resize Death a bit to fit the bull in the composition more.

Looking forward to seeing your Ace!

This lunchtime I'll update, whatever state she's in. Am conscious the other one will take more time so I'm trying to break the back of this one, soon!

as promised... small update. I don't think I'll have time to ZBrush some folds - it'll be quicker to refine and balance the clothing in PShop. I want to make my own staff though as this one is too weighty, and too close to the sceptre reference I grabbed off the net.

The hands aren't feeling right at the moment either and she needs some jewellery to suit her stature, I feel. I'm thinking some reddish jewels and gold so as to compliment the colour palette as it stands.

Very nice! I don't think the folds need all that much more doing to them, they're working real well. I do like the staff you have now, but I've not seen the reference, I suppose it'd be bad to have it too same-y. I think the hand on our left is a bit odd, pointing out the picture, maybe something more relaxed would be better?

I'll update in a few hours, gotta run to life drawing

Woah, the background is awesome! I like the current staff too. Suits her well and is just interesting to look at! Maybe add the the reddish jewelery to it as well along with some bracelets and necklaces. And I agree with Liz that her right hand needs some tweaking. Makes you wonder what she is pointing to.

Yeah, agreed on the pointy hand - definitely a weak point. Looks like she's overstating the fact there are mountains in the background, "look, here they are!!!"

I will get a willing victim / volunteer to pose for me at some point as I want to tighten the staff-hand also. It'll be a doddle once I have reference posed and lit as I want it. As for the staff itself, I'll build it in Max with the right light-source and have all the different elements as separate groups. That way I can render a few variations and decide what looks best in-situ.

    That sounds good

Not fixed her legs yet, working my way down! The background is going to be similar to the Nine of Wands card, with wands sticking out the ground behind her.

Don't lose heart, it'll be worth it when you reach 'that' point and you feel you've cracked it. Like the idea of knocking back the background wands; like a fog-of-war kinda thing.

    5 of Cups ~ update

Just a small change: chalice built and posed in what (I think) is a good setup. Have only blocked in a suggestion of spillage and clothing at the moment, but with a bit of tweaking I think it'll look ok.

Am not sure how much I can devote this weekend, but will plug away on the Ace tomorrow and hope to update the thread. Could get these sewn up next week, should we volunteer for a few more cards? hehe

Hmmm, why does a 10 minute fix take an hour?! Didn't get as much done as I'd hoped... will pick it up again next week. Bah!

It has a different feel to it now. More dark and cold than before. I like it and the fog lets you focus more on the character rather than getting distracted by the background.

grayslayer, the cups guy is way better. Love the use of 3d especially for the cups.

Worked on Death recently. Not sure if the bull works well in his current state though. His almost bare body makes him look kind...

Slayer - I'm liking the wand and the cloth! Mountains could maybe be pushed into the distance some more with mist or with further away peaks behind them? Seem a little 2d at the moment perhaps?

5 of cups is coming along, too - cups look lovely, looking forwad to seeing more done to the guy. Few more cards? ha! Well, I wouldn't stop you.. but I'm planning to work away at mine over the weekend and I'm still worried about time!

AG - like the atmosphere and colours. Death's leg might be a little stubby though?

Anyway, I started sketching again for the Knight of Cups. Figured i'd do a knight-knight

Yeah, good spot on the mountains. Will address that, as it'll add to the 'darkness which the ace has overcome...' or summink like that. hehe, was definitely joking about taking on more; as you say, time just goes?!?!

I like the Knight, his pose especially. He actually shares a lot with AG.'s Death in that respect. That may be a good thing?

Hey Team, just realised that the deadline is this Sunday. Are we presenting these in some kind of uniform way? I don't suppose a fancy border is a good thing, but just wondered if you'd had any thoughts about the final sub?

Yeah, I realised as I sketched it that the knight was similar to AG's composition but figured it'd be good thing so stuck with it

A shared border would be good, nothing too over the top though.. something similar to what tarot cards already have. I'm assuming they have something!

Sunday, really? eesh where has this month gone. I've made a fair bit of progress on that knight so I'll post him up when I'm not in class

Yes, Sunday is the last day of January and I think that's it. I've got a clear weekend planned, so should be good to complete Mr.Cups if I can break the Ace before then.

Agreed on the presentation / border. Something simple, so as not to steal from the image.

The knight and death already look similar in the Rider-Waite deck so there is definitely nothing wrong with that. Only a plus.

Also agree on the shared border. Maybe we could use cartoony little piggies hopping around after another and have two of them branded with a number and name of our card? haha, only kidding!

And I wish we had another week..working on the devil now. Will post progress sooon.

I like the look/text of the first card's border but it might be too much words and not enough picture. The last 2 are nice too.

Perhaps a border and the number is sufficient? The image should show what 'suit' they belong to... ?

Knight's face is spot-on! Good stuff.

The knight is rockin so far! Nice design and expression with a suiting noble steed. Also like where the background is heading. Keep it up!

And out of those 4 borders, I'm leaning more towards the second one. A thin border that isn't so distracting, yet pleasing, with the name of the card and number written on one line at the top (the bottom would be just as good, too).

Ace of Wands. I'm pretty happy with this, let me know what you think / if it needs anything else. I want to devote some time to the other card but if you spot something, let me know and I'll see how the time pans out.

Nice, he's really taking form now. Am not sure without checking, but should his knee be further over to (his) left - or 'are his legs wide enough to get around the horse'? It's a tiny gripe and I'm probably wrong. Thought I'd say now though in case, at a stage when it's easier to assess / fix.

His face is great, and I like the way he's gripping the cup already. They're the 2 focal points for me currently, and is a good thing I reckon.

Oh, and (on another note) it actually seems as though my life drawing proposal has been accepted. Sessions onsite, paid for by the company beginning April time. Will be updating my sketchbook more regularly this year, methinks.

Looking great, the castle is knocked back into the the background nicely now. I think the reduced colour palette has been successful so far, helping to make the face stand out. Are you going to continue this or break the white / black / red (and muted green) ?

I don't really know.. I think I'd benifit from more greens/foliage and such, but I'm having trouble getting it right. We'll see!

Perhaps you're right. I also thought the tree could look cool as if in Spring-bloom, the blossom would echo the highlights picked out in the armour. Might be distracting though, as may the foliage if you detail it too much.

I'm sure it'll come, I've faith in your skills.

Will post 5 Cups tomorrow, maybe even near-complete.

Border idea / mockup. Do we want to present them like this (not necessarily this design), but with a shared 'motif' or border?

I really like that border! I think we should definitely go for the shared border theme
