Its' free and it takes less than 10 seconds!
Yeah baby let's get this thing rolling. Absolutely looking forward to this, sounds like heaps of fun mixed in with hard work and lots of learning - my kinda of gig!
Team Members - comixnut, ImaGEEnation, (i'll update this if we get one more).
Yo J to the P! I asked Ferdi to join us, he'll be here soon! We'll just have to wait on Cameron, I already emailed him...we'll see what happens.
Alrighty, I'm pumped for this! Hey, what style are we going with here? I'm up for anything. We should do one where all of us are comfortable with, when again we shouldn't if we wanna push ourselves! I've got a feeling this CHOW is gonna be film noir or steampunk genre...
Awesome Cameron! Now all we need is Ferdi and the team is complete. anyone got messenger details to share, or should we just stick to emails or maybe google wave, like some others are trying? These things would be for those times when we all know we are sitting down together and we can share stuff as we do it.
I don't know about Ferdi. I already gave him this link but oviously he hasn't got back to us. In regards to 'secret convos' I wouldn't mind talking via Facebook chat since all of us have already have that, including Ferdi.
The confused part: I still have to get a better understanding of this whole major, lesser stuff, plus I have no idea about Tarot cards. But I'll wiki it. But if someone can break it down for me that'd be good!
So, what about the style we're going with? Are we just gonna go with the typical digi art style or comic style or somwthing else?
let's get some sketches done people! ('cos I got no clue where to begin with this Major, lesser crap also haha! )
LET'S KEEP POSTIN UP SHIT IN HERE AND MOTIVATE EACH OTHER!!!
TEAM CHOW III :: TAROT
Hello boys and girls! Once again, we saved something special for team chow. This is a liiittle different then what we usually have going on, so please pay close attention!
This month, Team Chow will be attempting to create it's very own Tarot Deck! For those of you who don't know what that is, it's a deck of cards very similar to the usual 4 suited deck, but with 22 extra cards called the 'major arcana'. The four suits are also different : Swords, Cups, Wands, and Pentacles/Coins. In the following post there will be a list of all the cards.
For those of you who don't know much about it, please allow me to send you to a couple of sites to read up on it.
Though often used as a form of divination, we'll be approaching it from a strictly design perspective. Each card is meant to tell a very particular tale (though this tale often depends on the reader) and has many symbols and meanings attached to it. The goal will be to do each card as a character-based (this is still chow) illustration to illuminate the meaning of the card. However, the specific meaning and the symbols will be up to you. We will, however, be following mostly to the Rider-Waite deck, with the exception that we will be using Princess instead of Page.
If you have any more questions about the above, please feel free to ask.
And here are the Rules ::
1. Your team will choose TWO CARDS per person to illustrate. So, a 2 person team needs 4, a 4 person team 8, etc. This is the minimum requirement, you may choose more.
2. You may only take major arcana for half your cards, please choose Lesser Arcana (The Suits) for at least half. Bonus points for those who do mostly Lesser Arcana!
3. You will post your choices in this thread. I will allow 4 teams per card. First come, first serve. If we get all the cards covered by at least four teams each, I will then be open to letting you pick cards that are already full. We want to make sure to get a full deck!
4. Please make sure that your files can be sized down to 9 cm by 15.5 cm (or 3.543 x 6.1 inches) at 300 dpi. I'm exploring the option of seeing if we can get it printed, so please make sure your work is print-quality, or please write "OPT OUT OF PRINT" when you submit your work so I know you're not interested in having your cards printed as part of your deck.
5. PLEASE DO NOT START DRAWING UNTIL JANUARY FIRST! Right now is the time to get everyone's cards assigned and start brainstorming, but please don't start drawing as it's unfair for the other teams.
6. That's it, Have Fun!
Thanks, and Good Luck!
Yeah Gee so basically it is a like a regular deck of playing cards but with 22 extra ones. And instead of playing regular games it is used to tell the future... or something like that.
You got the regular cards - lesser arcana
the extra ones - major arcana
not really sure on the meanings of most of the cards just yet!
Here is my research, we shall see where it leads me! I reckon we go with a cell shaded look, really cool outlines coloured nicely and softly on the inside. If that makes sense.
None of these images are mine, and all of them are copyright to their respective owners or creators.
count me in ya poozers!!
Welcome welcome Ferdi!
Ok found this link for the deck that everyone is supposed to be using as a starting point.
Cameron did you actually want me to pick 2 cards for you to do? Do have a preference or any ideas? A short list maybe that we can help you with?
How about you Gee?
Sorry been busy with work. But Yeah! Let's do this shit!!! Woo hooow!
Mmmhh...sorry I still don't get this whole thing. Can someone pick my cards...anything will do but nothing to gay...please!
So, honestly I haven't done any sketches for this...just not sure what to dosince I don't know what to draw...
Yo Ferdi, what's craking brother!? Good to finally see you here buddy!
Yeah cell shade sounds good, since I think almost everyone will go with the painted look..but whatever up to you guys.
Nice work on the research, JP! I knew I could count on you on collecting stuff hehe!
How about genre? What do you guys reckon? Bleach is a pretty good example I think...
Hey Gee welcome back man, was getting worried! What kinda job is it? did you get a gig?
Onto to the Chow, just some stuff to keep in mind that has been answered on the main thread:
Please consider the fact that about half the teams end up dropping out, so we'd like to have as much redundancy as possible. Consider doing something other than a sword card, which seems to be the most popular suit. ;]
And keep in mind you don't have to stick to literal cups, wands and pentacles. Some versions I've seen are spears, staves, staffs, sticks, trees (for wands) -- Shells, horns (think Boromir's horn), chalices, the grail, (for cups) -- Coins, Gold, Talismans, stars, (for pentacles). And you don't have to take the card literally as long as the meaning gets through, so there are lots of interesting ways to make the illustration more fun for yourself. :]
Yah, interpretation is totally open, just try to get the same theme/idea behind it, okay? :] There are tons of tarot decks with different interpretations for it, so. It's totally up to you guys for the interpretation.Originally Posted by Liffey
Are we obligated to use all the symbols attached to the tarot card? For example I'm drawing The World, and there are traditionally four creature's faces in each corner... am I obligated to include those? Also the character is usually either a naked woman or Jesus Christ... neither of which allow for much design creativity. Am I allowed my own interpretation of this World character? Sorry if this has been answered already. :|
It has to be a character, but it doesn't have to be a humanoid (just like we've had squirrel and dinosaur characters here in chow). You can still feature the objects, but it is a character contest, so centering it around a character that symbolizes the story the card is supposed to tell sounds best to me! But I don't want to be a total dictator on this.. The goal of this team chow is to come up with an awesome deck, so I'll allow leeway. :]Originally Posted by Tavarilyn
I've been perusing a few SBs since we've been given the greenlight on drawing and I noticed something. This is a CHOW... but there are cards in the Tarot deck that are not specifically person-based. It was my assumption that every card had to be a "character", specifically humanoid? Was I incorrect in this? Should every card we draw feature a person/etc that represents that card or that card's story... rather than an object that is commonly featured on a traditional tarot card?
2 and 3 of Pentacles
6 of Swords
4, 5 or Knight of Cups
Ace, 3, 6, 9 or 10
and any of the major arcana is great as well, but remember we can only 1 for each of us.
Choose quickly please, just name them and i will add them to the main thread
Alright, I guess I go with Knight of Cups...I can't find the others that you suggested that I find interesting...and I couldn't find the Aces...or Major Arcana. So can you just pick one for me...something with a girl in it would be good!
No we haven't decided yet. I was thinking of combining some themes, say knights in space (although that probably has been done to death), mechanical fairies, something like that. i will think of something and give you my suggestions tomorrow. Also at least one of mine will not be humanoid, so we could make the whole based on animals, with some kind of theme.
I am so down with making them animals with human body! But tat means we have to pick the animals and hopefully we won't have the same ones. Man, this reminds me of Dee's class somehow! hahaha! God, I miss her! NOT!
I'm thinking that we should go towards something colorful, like Tellos... mmmh?
blah edit again: ok final choice, My choice of cards are Knight of Pentacles, and Queen of Swords. The other ones were taken, posted my choice in he appropraite thread.
So it's gonna be sci-fi cellshaded space animals?

Sci fi? We all agree? I don't mind any genre!
So, I was thinking what color scheme are we going to focus on with this? I know that'll be a later stage of the process, but knowing what theme, colors, environment etc would help with the design of the characters I think.
I'd say cell shade but with a nice ink outline, comic style! Or otherwise we can just color in the lines...
who sounds good man!
ill have a good read of the stuff tmrw!!!
since pretty much you guys took the rest, ill go with aces.
tellos is a great book! Mike weirengo all the way!! (r.i.p)
cell shading looks fun. are we gonna nut out style sheets so everyone can base it on??
PJ: Ah crap man I though it was white cards that meant taken already. Gonna have to rethink my ideas.
Anyway, here's a piece of crap for you guys to grief me over
I'll do a better design next time. I'm more just experimenting with the comic style here.
As you can see it's a sci-fic cyborg space animal-humanoid abomination.
Oh yeah and it's Qeen of swords
