    Cool. Everybody likes demons.
    I like demons.
    You like demons.
    He/she/it likes demons.
I am really interested to see the wild interpretations we get out of this one. Should be interesting.
Is there any special qualities the ninth circle has that the others don't?
Is Nessus the name of the ninth circle, or something else?

Just thought I'd add some further inspiration based on the name & circle.

But the anniquilators are from a entity named Nessus that lives in 9th turf, or Nessus is one name for the 9th hell?

    I shot the sheriff.

If you need inspiration then read about Dantes tale where he travels through the nine stages of hell or go to wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferno_%28Dante%29
    scroll down to:

    Ninth Circle (Treason)
you can read how evil this place is and how souls are tortured in the frozen lake and read how satan looks! there are even pictures from the place

the creatures for this week should be the most horrifying badass evil looking creatures you could ever fear!!

This sounds like a particularly fun one, hopefully I can find time to take part.

I'm seeing a big, badassed, frosty, centaur-inspired fiend!

A quick scribble. So far he looks very cuddly for a demon from the 9th hell but that's going to change.

I think Nessus, as used in the Divine Comedy, is one of the tour guides they meet as the go down, down, down - sort of like the matre d of hell. So I don't think anyone should feel locked into making a centaur. Perhaps he just unlocks the gates that let out the Annihilators? Either way - Annihilators from hell....

I started laying out the background (since I need me some background practice) so this weekend I can have some fun inserting the creature(s) of the annihilation.

Smashed Pumpkin - yup, he's a bit huggable now, but I'm sure that will evolve. And your pumpkin is intact, unsmashed - very curious...

Pulling further info from The Divine Comedy, the Ninth Circle was reserved for traitors. Also those sent there were frozen in a lake of ice.

    I've got some ideas

The Annihilator is an enormous and terrible sentry, patrolling the lowest of the lower hells. It has several unusual characteristics. The beast has two heads, presumably to see in all directions at once, though it's lack of eyes renders this conclusion rather questionable.
Annihilators are called so due to their unique ability to utterly, completely, annihilate other brings, body and soul. Their victims presence in the world fades completely, even from memory. Though a terrible punishment to the living, the blissful release of oblivion is understandably seen as a mercy to the ever-suffering denizens of the Hells.
On a side note, Annihilators are actually rather affable when not on the job.

Depends where you want to draw reference from - in Dante's 'The Divine Comedy' the ninth circle of hell is a four tiered frozen lake.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferno..._.28Treason.29

In D&D Nessus is a place of pits and ravines of endless depth.

Im thinking a three headed crowned lion with the body of a vile serpent and the front legs of a dragon.
Either that or a swarm of tiny crowned skulls with multiple arms and maggot bodies.
    Which one works?

Two wips, the first one is very generic, the second one is pretty straightforward horror centaur-y. Oh well, maybe I should just start over again?

Yeah, you don't need to do a centaur, by any means. Nessus is a name that has been used many different ways in different bits of literature and fiction. In the Disney "Hercules" movie, he's a big evil blue centaur. In Dungeons and Dragons, Nessus is indeed the name for the deepest circle of Hell. (I also thought it was the name used for that circle in either Milton or Dante', but I may be remembering that wrong).

All of these different works of fiction are influenced by the others, and by stories from antiquity. You're not held to any one particular piece of fiction. I just needed to pull a name for the layer.

Another example of this sort of interchangeablity of names is Malebolge/Malebolgia. In some of the works cited above, the name refers to a place. In Todd McFarlane's comic "Spawn" its the name for The Devil himself.

You just need to design a powerful new creature/monster/demon/devil which originates from the deepest part of Hell. Don't get too bogged down in following Milton or Dante' or Dungeons and Dragons or Disney. That's not important. Think of myth as something liquid and changeable, not something carved in stone. There are always many different tellings of mythical and religious stories.

EDIT: Speaking of D&D, Venger you have one of the most awesome CA handles ever. Venger is one of the coolest villains of all time. Have you ever noticed that he's essentially a winged guy who rides a flying horse? I love that.

I just had a thought though. My creature has undeniably humanoid aspects, It's head and face will be very much inhuman but I just thought I'd check if it's ok before getting some hours invested in it.

I was looking through the Gustave Dore scenes from the inferno and he has his Nessus on the 5th level playing bows and arrows-- so I guess it's subjective, and I like the way Michael Jaecks put it - liquid and changeable.
I added the Annihilators, and their boss with the pitchfork to the scene. What do you guys think? Hellish? Could it use anything else?

@ MasterStryke Well my creature is bread by the Minotaur in the seventh circle of hell, he takes the most violent sinners and breeds them with beasts to create these abominations. They are then sent to the ninth circle of hell to perform their duty.

My initial idea was for them to be equipped with scythes allowing them to scalp the sinners of the ninth hell for eternity but I feel that perhaps equipping them with a tool would be leaning again towards the idea of an individual and against the COW rules. What I thought was they could simply spend eternity galloping across the surface of the frozen lakes trampling the heads of the sinners for eternity.
