@JBurrough: Cool start! I can imagine a story even by now... Something with lots of adventure in it.

Here´s how far I got. I will change the legs, they are too long, I think. But I try to be optimistic, colours are still frustrating me.

Other then mining the stock section on Dev I am having trouble finding good reference images, any suggestions? Most of the pics I am finding are just way too old( in the age of the models way , not the life span of the actual photo).

Rhen, you've got my sympathy when it comes to finding models/ref stock! I use istockphoto.com for most of mine. It gets updated regularly and you can save a low-size (and watermarked) jpg to your comp of any picture on the site. There are more than a few brilliant photographers there, though their "search" engine leaves a bit to be desired.

My initial "thoughts", really rough. And you can see which one I chose to continue. I tried to incorporate a few of the other aspects from the roughs I didn't choose and hope to carry this one to completion..... perhaps on tablet/pc instead of pencil/paper. -deep breath- Comments welcome. Feel free to be harsh!

I was going to do a more sinister scene, but at the same time I couldn't help taking advantage of the topic and making this one more like an illustration. Here's a beginning sketch. I'm thinking of adding one more background character to make a group and having them sneaking around in a library or museum..

Hey Art-n-Coffee.. I really like what you've got in your piece. That tail coming out of the egg is priceless! But since you're new to CHOW, you may not realize that you're straying too far away from the brief which clearly stated 12-16 years of age. The key to understanding CHOW, really, is to treat it like you'd treat a job from an art director: what they ask for, you deliver, in your best interpretation of the brief. I would imagine you're welcome to finish your piece but I don't think it would be allowed into the poll.

Hope that helps... and welcome to CHOW! :]

Pokin' along... girl and dragon lines done. Still trying to figure out the background scenery.

EDIT: More lines... not exciting enough of a change to warrant its own post.

    Ok, my try...

LaurenHeroOfTime -There are a lot of fantasy scenes, sci-fi "twist" is great...

artina - Nice "startups", but actually i like the B because it tells me some more story.

Josu - Great story behind the picture... Im really excited to see the finished piece.

Wow shannanigan and Katanasoul - you guys are so speedy! They both look great so far

Ya Pierce9 the best way to learn is by doing! And you have a really nice mood/atmosphere going on in yours already, I'm looking forward to seeing it finished :]

Parcel-Sisters - I really love the poses and the expressions on those two! Especially the boy's expression, he certainly looks like he's up to no good haha!

kittens - It's looking really nice so far! I really like the direction it looks like you're going with the lighting and the girls expression is awesome! The only thing that looks a little weird to me is her left arm, it seems a bit high and a little too far back. Other than that the pose looks really great

Rhen - I often go through http://www.inmagine.com/ when looking for a specific reference image. I've found their search engine pretty decent. You can save the small watermarked images off the site.

What a wicked theme! I've lurked the past three or four CHOW's without the free time to finish any of them. I'm determined to finish something this time haha. There are some really great starts already ~ I can't wait to see them all finished! And hear their stories as well

Been thinking about what books I read as a young adult...mostly Star Wars. Haven't read much since then. How shameful!

Here's what I have sketched up so far. Need to fix the body before I go any further, that left arm and her legs are mangled up something fierce.

    Unhappy

so this is a rough sketch, wanted to get some feedback maybe before continuing, or just going for another idea...
first sketches i had was so similar to others here so i started doodling again and came up with this one, and i like it, just hope it works
dunno if i should go for this human-dragonish idea or simply just make her a human?

Thank you for the crits. And yes she looks like she has a boy's chest but, she must look like at a young 12 years girl.
Now i will work a background for the cover! (maybe for the next i must workd this one before coloring the characters haha)
The background... not of my favorite design thing

rumpenstiltzkin: cool idea, but i think that dont fill the requeriments. that chow is about a girl who find a dragon egg, not about a dragon-girl inside an egg.
i dont know really maybe it's accepted, good look with that

Rumpenstiltzkin: While the brief leaves a lot of room for imagination, I think your interpretation stepped out of that room. The brief asks for a girl who found a dragon egg and your sketch doesn't show that, only a dragon egg with a (dragonkin) girl inside it.
I'm not sure if the dragonkin girl wouldn't be allowed, but the egg needs to remain a dragon egg. There are a lot of different designs available for dragonkins of which people can tell in one glimpse that it's a dragon, and I think a half-human-half-dragon hybrid might be pushing away from that (But hopefully a more qualfied member of CA can give you more feedback on this).
There has to be a girl who's found it, as well. She's the main focus of this week's CHOW.

Shannanigan: I like what you have so far, your lineart is very clean and crisp. One thing though: The expression on the girl's face looks a bit 'sleepy', probably because of the eyelids. If you raise or remove them (I'm not sure which one would work best) she will get that expression of fear or surprise you were going for.

Art-n-Coffee and Kittens: Welcome to CHOW. I adore the childbook-illustration-like style you're both going for. Very fitting for this week's CHOW and both images look very cute. I'm looking forward to see what you will end up with.

gdlr - I love the haiti style idea, it's really original! the only crit, as others have already pointed out, is that it's a bit difficult to tell her gender (and age), but you're right, 12 years old girls can perfectly have that chest... so it can be ok

k_z - I like the composition in yours, and I'm wondering if there will be a story about her shoes and her only sock ;P hehe

LaurenHero - she's looking a bit old I think, rather like a mother... maybe you could make her ass smaller and reduce that from-nose-to-mouth wrinkle... but it's coming along nicely

    Shogo
    - looks like indiana jones scene hehe...

artina - I like B the most, and then A...

ok, here's my try, the initial sketch and some coloring I did this morning...
