Your studies are interesting to look at. I can tell that you're really focusing on the fundamentals here which is good. Experimentation is a great way to learn as well as you did with the brushes. Cool stuff!

Hello Everybody. I'm totally pumped right now, my art priorities are a little more organized. Still haven't gone much farther yet, but having a systematic approach to things make this all a little easier to bare (bear? lol).

anyway, I realize how much MORE I need to sketch. If I thought I was sketching before. That was nothing. I'm going for the earth's atmosphere, then the moon. Sky's the limit. why? because for me, in this process, my painting will get better, my design will get better, my whole art game, I find only improves with more sketching.

Now, here are some insane studies. I say insane because they might not mean anything to you, but these are the kinds of sketches which have helped me greatly improve all this time...

in a few posts, I'm going to post my recently finished sketchbook (I think about 50 pages)....

    stay tuned!! PEACE!

I went through in half the pages, I have not much words but feelings I'm definitely inspired, I met your SB in a sensitive state, you do many things I know I should do too...
It seems you do what you should do right now and you don't even need me to say "keep it up" because there's no way you wouldn't (and who am here anyway, just a visitor, but that's not the point )... Your sketches emanate an attitude I'd love to have more than for a few enthusiastic or serious moments...
Good luck! (I don't like this phrase when there is effort but I don't know a better one in English)

Thanks for the comment on my sketchbook!
I'm really inspired by the improvement from page 1 to 6. A really nice jump.
Your perspective and technical drawings on this page came out quite well.
I'll check in here now and then to see more stuff!

    Thumbs up 1000 boxes challenge!

Marian Rowling- Hey Marian! hope all is well. Yeah, I feel a lot more "purposeful" about my art. I feel I'm definitely being led career-wise where I need to be led.
Dye-Lawn- Hey D-L! feel free to come back anytime u want!

    ----

    Hello Everybody! guess what...?

I'm now an advanced beginner . That's right. I'm going to be posting 1000 box sketches, hopefully by month's end!
why? to be an even better artist of course! I think I've been doing a lot of talk and not enough walk... so I've decided to challenge myself to draw 1000 boxes! yep!

(Although it feels like painstakingly eating vegetables lol), I've roughly calculated how much time it will take me...

1st- If I do 100 box drawings on 1 page, I should have 10 pages of 1000 boxes for a final. That's first.

2nd- If I spend 24 hrs(a whole day) x 1 box a minute, I should have 60x24= 1,440 boxes at the end of one day... (but no one has time for that obviously pld, so I have to spread out those days. So then, instead...

I'll do about one hr a day of box drawings, and that equals... 1 box/min.= 60 boxes everyday! (more or less). So, according to 60 boxes/day x about 20 days, I should have done 1200 boxes before a month is over!

well... wish me luck folks. And don't expect anything fancy! it's all for practice...

    I'm currently at 190 boxes... I'll see u when I get there!
    Peace...
    --

p.s- I haven't forgotten about those drawing templates I've given. I've modified them, and I'll show you how I use them when I get a chance to...

Marian Rowling- haha! thanks Marian. I feel good about doing the challenge too! I do feel I have greatly improved drawing the box, especially learning little tips about certain angles... but I don't think the Mastery level is there yet. I know right? I actually have another set of challenges I'd like to do regarding boxes! I'll post those later, it's a little more complex. Well, a lot. I'll check your page in a bit.
    ---

Hey all. I have a nice References folder going for me now. It took a while to categorize them for my working schedule, but now I got it almost complete. I just have to keep updating it. I say that because I'm now going to post according to the methods I use to practice... (I might post anything from sets of characters, to environments, to abstract exercises, etc). It's just a lot more efficient for me; I recommend y'all do the same thing if you don't want to waste time sketching random things without any direction...

    And now...

Here are some gestures with my improved speed and structural understanding. Although, they are lacking much understanding on my part. I have yet to study my anatomy.

Thanks for the comment! I guess my perspective has gotten kinda sloppy, I'll be sure to work on that. The amount of work here is absolutely staggering...maybe you should be doing some more refined stuff when you feel confident with your piles and piles of studies. Doing all these crazytons of the same exercise is a good way to learn but I can't imagine they're pushing you very hard.

kimozabbi- Hey man! don't swear so much. And keep doing those boxes. Stay professional. Cool. And confident. You can make it!

Vertical- Hey, thanks for checking out my SB. I'm humbled. I know what you mean about the insane studies and not enough refined work. But you can't blame me. After much research and observation:

I've changed my whole artistic perspective after realizing continually-- not only faults in my own work- but also in student's work and even in some professional work-- that the basics are the MOST-OVERLOOKED thing in all of art. For me, the more I use them, the better I get! ( I can say a lot about this, but simply put), I believe in us creating learning systems to effectively produce top-notch material. (I think some of these institutions train us wrong in that regard), thus here I am trying to learn many artistic fields at once. ( I don't want to write an essay lol)-- so with that said, I hope that helps your question. Sorry if I sound rash. I just get rowdy when I'm passionate about something, (which is not easy for me to say) So you know I mean that!

    Hello Everybody!

It's almost Christmas, and almost a new Year!! Are y'all excited?

This post is just a quick post of things I found on my comp hard drive.
A few Late 2010 projects, and a few early 2011 projects I was doing and unhappy with. It's not all of them, but I just want to show this so y'all can see all my mistakes and frailties. This is my artist flashback for the year behind me.

    Unto 2012 lol.

p.s.-- As you can tell, I've been doing nothing but sketching for half this year (as you can see in my previous posts). And as you can tell, I stepped my game up!

I'll be getting back into digital painting because I remember the love I had for it (not that I stopped, I just didn't have time). But I've got some commissions coming along, and some serious artist goals to achieve. Not for me only, but with a few nice friends I have! Pray for me.

    Peace Everyone. Enjoy!

the basics are the MOST-OVERLOOKED thing in all of art
Agreed, but that's nor really what I meant to talk about, guess I was unclear. You drew 1000 boxes. That is awesome and impressive. Immediately after the boxes you went on to do a ton of gestures and stopped thinking much about perspective. I'm all for studying the basics, but the thing is you're not studying them hard enough. drawing a box is not hard. analyzing and drawing a large complex building in perfect perspective is. Doing still lifes is. You could even just go a little bit further and draw boxes of different sizes in the same scene. There are so many more exercises and ways you should be using the knowledge you've started to build from doing these heaps of easy and basic studies, but instead of taking your studies one step further you've moved on to doing heaps of another basic skill. And sure you're better at drawing boxes and making gestures now, but what does that get you? I'm assuming your final goals in art aren't "master drawing isolated boxes in a single perspective" or "draw really nice 30-60 second gestures"

I'm not saying you should stop studying the basics. I'm saying you need to start studying them HARDER.

Move on. Push yourself. Sticking to what you're good at and never branching out into the unfamiliar is a surefire way to never get anywhere. Take it slow. Work on more finished stuff. I'd say the work you have in post #165 and earlier was better practice.

Vertical- Hey thanks for the feedback. I don't have any disagreement with anything you said. I think you're absolutely right Actually! Ye, I got a problem. Sue me lol. I actually am in some kind of mindset right now, and maybe I'm taking it "too" slow? I dunno; (by sticking to these very basic studies). But, I think the 1000 boxes was only the starting point for me in that regard. I've learned a few things from those, and I have a plan on how to utilize those (as a matter of fact- I'm going to post more complex box studies soon- you'll see, I need to add up to 100 first).

And no, doing these simple and easy exercises isn't my life goal. That would be a sad artist's life lol- (worse than a starving artist I'd say). But ye, I DO have a mind to do more finished or more refined work. I speak for all when I say, that those kinds of works are COMING!

maybe all I'm asking for from y'all is a little patience. (I know what I'm doing people). If I don't start showing refined work by (let's say... in March of 2012---- uhm.. Shoot me through the screen) lol.

    Alright. Thanks for the talk.

    Before 2011 is OVER!

    Hello All!

I must post these before 2011 is over...

I did some Bridgman/Vilppu studies over the summer in some other sketchbook which I will now post-- but first with that, I'll show y'all some digital sphere studies I just did. I have to lay a strong foundation for myself If I wish to be successful. Digital Painting Basics is necessary!
    ----

There are two more important posts I will make after this before the year is over:

    1) the 100 human box gestures I promised to do.. currently at 65
    2) 100 volumetric building structures (I really don't know what to call this kind of study, maybe You can name it when I show you)

    ------

OK. So before those 2 important posts, the next post immediately after this is going to be some character sketches and miscellaneous structural exercises also from that sketchbook to keep the inspiration flowing!

And then I'll be ALL PREPPED for next year (I hope).

Peace Out Everyone! WISHING YOU AN EARLY MERRY CHRISTMAS if you wont be around!!

lemming-clone-- Thanks. I'll keep it up!
    ----

    Hello ALL!

I will post this and the rest of it tomorrow. Here is the first part of many structural exercises I did, and some more random doodles (whatever you want to call them) characters, vehicles, etc... I will also post those 100+ human box gestures I did, and (I've got stuff to say about that! lol).

For now, have a good night!

p.s. I'm not going to stop the quick sketches... BUT I AM GOING to start taking my focus away from them. At this moment they profit me nothing. I need to start doing some more finished work. I'm at the level now where all these basic rudimentary exercises are just getting repetitive and boring. I think I've done so much basic exercises my hand gets dumb cuz they all look-alike. I need to start seeing these principles working in some finished or at least (half-finished) images.

I'm about to move into more digital-based work for the new year!

    Peace!!

    Post Human Box Gestures!

kimozabbi- I don't know. I'm kinda busy nowadays,
    ----

    Hey Everybody!

100 human box gestures completed, with some extras. And also, here are the first attempts at those (volumetric?) cube exercises I mentioned earlier. (If you have a better name tell me lol). They are Definitely helping me out. Tough work. I have challenged myself to 100 of these.. I might either post them around Christmas, or I'll keep doing them into next year and you'll see how I've progressed.

Either way. It was a good year, and I'm going to step back into digital painting. I improved a lot on the visual understanding and penmanship this year, traditionally. Time for color and depth improvement digitally. When I combine these, I believe I will reach a much higher level in the coming year. As Vertical said, my exercises will be getting tougher. I also haven't forgotten about those templates, neither have I forgotten about my promise to study anatomy (bones and muscles). I think I said that like 3 pages ago. But it's all good!

See you when I get there!
    Peace!

p.s- I promised to keep this online sketchbook as a place to inspire y'all... If your not being inspired please tell me how I can fix that.

I forgot to talk about the box exercises... It seems they are more conceptual than anything. Little is found on the internet about doing box exercises. I think there was a post on here trying to determine the exact placements of the vertices relating to joints. I know a few things that work, and I didn't do a "totally" in-depth study on this, but I would position it on the bone structure level, as oppose to the outer frame of muscles. It seems to work better that way, I have intentions on posting in a thread a good study on this type of exercise, I think it is highly beneficial. It just seems to lack any good methodology or foundation. I know some anatomy authors have slightly discussed this method- (vilppu, bridgman, loomis, etc). But, I have perceived things about this kind of study that I would like to help relate to anyone who's interested. I will use master examples and try to explain why things work and why they don't work. But all this will be A LONG and difficult STUDY for me. So please be patient. I need to collect sources and do some more solid examples, so if anyone is interested in hearing about this,

or if you have any links that would help me better study this. Please send them on!!

Thanks!--- this is a work in progress.
