"Conceptual Portraiture" by Anita Kunz
Kunz will explain her own creative process from cultivating ideas to using reference materials properly and legally. Then, she will move into conceptual portraiture showing tons of examples - including one conceptual portrait painting from start to finish in a set of 10 slides. In her own words:
For this class I’ll be showing examples of portraits I’ve done, with explanations of how I came up with the ideas, and also how I utilized reference material to aid with the likenesses. It’s extremely important to use photography properly, both to understand the form and features of the face, and also to use the information in a photograph without infringing on the photographers copyright (lawsuits are rampant these days). Obviously it’s much better to use one’s own photograph from which to create an artwork, but often when an artist is commissioned to paint a famous person, only copyrighted photographs are available. The trick is to use the photograph properly.
There will also be a Q and A period. - Anita Kunz

I love a good Portraiture class. Its to bad I spent all my money on 4 streaming classes last month
Could someone please post a review after the class?
Anita is a fountain of knowledge, both about making the art, and handling yourself as a business person. This class is a no-brainer if you're interested in illustration in any context!
This will be a birthday gift to myself.
I have been having a blast attending all these classes. Every year I get older and thankfully a little smarter. Every time I hear another artist speak about their work new things stick to my grey matter. I feel my perspective has changed just a little and for the better. MOM, learning IS fun!
Anita has made my world spin around many times (in a platonic she has been my art hero for years and years kind of way). She is Canadian, but don't let that fool ya, she will kick your @#$ in a critique. Smart, tough and incredibly talented (or rather motivated, obsessive, passionate as I think these attributes are what make up talent) Anita will make your world shift a little too. BE THERE IF YOU CAN!

I second Jon's post! I can't get enough of these classes! Anita's class will be icing on the cake.
Anita's classes are always insightful. Her critiques are really to the point and she's so damn good at nailing down the problem areas of a piece and offering helpful ways to fix them, from concept to finish. You'll never get a better ass kicking from a sweeter person.
I'll definitely be at this class! Anita's insights into conceptual portraiture will demystify the entire process. How to do this with a little reference (which can be hard to come by when doing celebrities) and building something that's your own. She's a master at this, and she'll discuss everything from concept all the way through execution, as well as sound business practices and copyright law, etc. She does this at the Academy and you can hear a pin drop.
I'll be there with bells on and I hope to see many of you there as well.
I have watched 3 workshops. I think they are great and I hope this stops people trying to steal dvd's.
Atm the workshops are a little pricey, I understand why but along the lines of a community spirit maybe the price could decrease if more people signed up?
Well done to concept art.
Not sure where to ask this so if I need to post elsewhere please advise.
Because of schedules and work load I don't have opportunity to attend the online sessions as I would love to.
Is there an option to securely purchase and download a video or order a dvd of these online sessions after the fact? I didn't see any available in the concept art store.
Surely everyone doesn't have to be penalized because of a few thieves and pirates. There are many places on line that do this, so there must be a way.
I'm signed up! Anita Kunz is wonderful and I'm really looking forward to the class.
cant wait for this. been a fan of hers for a loooong time. i think this ties in very directly with the point of view discussion we had saturday. cant wait to listen to Anita share hers.
this will be a good one
Anita is one of the best at producing a conceptual portrait. It is no accident that she has done so many high profile illustrations. Time, The New Yorker and Rollingstone have consistently used her to grace their covers with her interpretation of famous individuals.
Anita understands how to create her own interpretation of a likeness without copying a photographers image. She has the ability to use many different references and redraw her subject in the image that she wants to create. The combination of this ability and great ideas make her a commodity among publishers. Because she is not tied to any particular piece of reference the publisher has no issue with copyrights and is assured an original image.
To appreciate how difficult it is to work like this, just try it! Then make sure your concept is great and you compose a beautiful picture. Just to make it more impressive, most of her editorial assignments have to be completed in one day.
This will be a great class with many others there for support, Foster, Pratt, Hundley, etc...
Purchased my ticket, really looking forward to this! I'm loving the opportunity to be able to learn from all these masters as i have yet to find anything remotly close to this level of teaching here in South Africa. I think $45 is really reasonable.
Thanks everyone. I'm looking forward to it! Please bring lots of questions!
Dang it; I have to go to a Xmas pagent for one of my kids. Do you have to pay now, to watch it later?

My Inglorious Portfolio!
Copied this from the shop page in case any one wants to see the countdownCode:
Every single one of these classes have been mindblowing but I've been skipping because of the time difference. 2PM is 10PM for me with work the following morning. (I work weekends & erratic hours). I'll catch the stream of Anita's later, looks great. Huge fan.
Anita has tons of idea sketches, so the first half of the class she'll talk about generating ideas, and continue along the idea of point of view. The second half she will talk about commissioned conceptual portraits.
Anita has 24 examples, and then she has a portrait job from start to finish including photo reference.
She will show you how she uses photo reference properly.
That last point is a BIG ONE!
I would love to attend the class and already payed for it, but I can´t figure out how to get my password... The instructions tell me to go to the order confirmation and scroll down, and there should be a box where I should enter something, but there is no box!
Can somebody help me? I so want to join you!
There is not...
I payed and waited for the mail. I opened the link to the order status page. The brief says (if I get it right) that there, if I scroll down, should be a box, but there is not.
There is a header saying "This order is pending review. You will not be able to download items until your order is reviewed and approved.". Does that mean that I will have to hope that someone reviewes my order before the class starts or I won´t be there? The mail says that the order status won´t change, so does that sentence matter?
I am afraid I missed some information...
Help is very appreciated, thank you, Liffey!
