Juicy rendering on the studies man, good stuff!

nice WoW paintings - I used to have a long standing addiction, so this fills me with both warmth and dread. The Orc is pretty wicked, though I wouldn't mind seeing some more elaborate armor on him and maybe a hint of battle; scars, blood, damaged equipment, etc...

Love the nelf chick, and I know she's a WIP but I hope there will be an arrow and quiver somewhere in there. =)

As I said earlier in this SB, I really like your studies, especially the ones on the previous page and the page before that. But I must admit that I don't quite like the wow pieces. The rendering is good as always, but I think both of them lacks details and looks pretty static and dead. As heartcore mentioned, maybe some scars, blood, battle damage etc will make the orc "pop". And maybe some hue variety in the skin and highlights on the armor? I think it looks a bit "toyish" atm, but I guess you wanted a more comic style (aka wow-style)?

The torso of the night elf is a bit too long and thin I think (yea even for a wow elf haha ). And the way she bends the hand doesn't look natural. I know it's a WIP so I don't want to sound too harsh. Hope you get my point.

Keep it up man. You're doing great!

you know what I'm gonna say, composition! I think you are being a bit tame, even for fan art. Bite off more than you can chew! you'll learn more fucking up a lot then playing it safe and doing a piece you know will look good.

heartcore: hey thanks man, glad you like it! honestly, Im not to used to drawing armor yet, so i think thats visible in my work. and i kinda struggled to find any decent orc armor that wasnt over the top with floating things and what not. wasnt what i wanted to paint. so i kinda half made up a set. which doesnt help me really learn anything about armor. but im gonna keep at it, and improve on it in time. thanks again for stoppin by!

Esco, Metal fingers, Aryeh: thanks guys! with the imagination pieces, im not really striving for anything to be really narrative. this is gonna sound lame but i have the mind set that my personal work is crap, and it will be crap for a while. but i still gotta put in the miles in order to get to where i want to be. so i gotta do a buncha practice pieces and just crank em out even if they dont make sense. but with that said, im learning a ton from them even tho theres not to much visibly happening content wise; action, story, etc.

i think that i am taking small steps when it comes to the drawings coming from my imagination. but thats simply to get things out on a consistent basis. the consistency helps me feel a sense of progress and productiveness when im making an imagination piece a week. If i didnt have that sense of progress, id feel a lot worse about where i currently am with my skill for painting. and thats just not how anyone wants to feel like. yea, im slowly working my way to having the pieces be more then just a pose and a BG. but right now, its not what im fixated on. im not a natural storyteller, im an improviser. but if i do have one, then ill surely try to paint it. but right now, im trying to build up some pieces so that i have something to help show progress and that i can paint. I hope it doesnt sound like im coming off on you guys. i greatly appreciate all the input and observations. i truly do!

i just have my own goals and milestones that i already have set in my mind. guidance is great, and the crits are awesome, i cant say how much i appreciate it, but in the end, i gotta do what i want to do. if im doing something i dont enjoy, it wont get done as well as something i do enjoy gets done. so ill find my learnings through that. But again, i will be doing some completely out of my comfort zone pieces too. its just when i feel the desire to do it is when ill be doing them.

so hopefully you guys understand where i am coming from... im still pretty pumped that i even have characters with actual backgrounds behind them! hehe

anyways, rant is done! heres the night elf lady. gonna move on to something else. maybe another wow piece. undecided at the moment.

    Yeah!

Good rant; you have a good point. It's more important to actually draw something than sit back and wonder how perfect you could make it, and then not make any marks at all.

It's more important to stay on the horse sometimes

You have a great painting style and technique ! However I feel in the last few painting you've posted are feeling stiff, I recommend that you practice some gestures.

Critiques on my work always welcome!!

Really glad I stumbled upon this one. Those studies are amazing and I think they will carry over to your imaginative work, even in ways that are unexpected. I totally understand how you feel about being so concerned about every aspect of the painting that you dont want to do anything, I developed that habit myself because of school and am just getting over it. I don't know if you know of Daniel Chavez, but he always talks about "poop" drawings and paintings, which I guess are just paintings to explore things and practice and I think those "poop" works are a good place to find yourself within.

I really love the soft creepy look you have with some of your creature/character pieces. It almost seems like they are emitting light in some ways and I think soft and creepy are a good combination.

Looking forward to seeing you progress and thank you for posting so many cool thoughts and pieces to look at!!

    This is an unbelievable sketchbook!

Your style of painting and often times your subject matter (The stylish gentlemen for example) are exactly the kind of stuff I wish I was pulling off. I see you as me if I was older and better.

very strong studies. The stuff from your head though are not as strong. Consider using reference for your illustrations too. Also, maybe play with edges a bit more. Right now everything is too sharp, which feels very unnatural.

vayne108: thanks man! ya i agree, my stuff is very stiff. im a lot looser when i draw using my whole arm, i find digital drawing, especially on a tablet that isnt a large one, makes my art look really stiff. till i can afford a bigger one, ill just have to keep workin with what i got.

bpic: hey thanks for stoppin by! ya Daniel Chevez is one of my favs too, and i agree, getting the poo out and just letting the brain try and figure out "shit" is a good thing to do. but sometimes just finishing a piece feels satisfying too. cus in the end, ill always poop!

bpic: hahah wow thanks man, i appreciate it, keep at it man, believe in yourself and never stop working!

Chaser226: ya i agree, i need to do more studies and build up my mental library of shit. ill get there. but as for the sharpness in my latest peices. its just something im messin around with. might be too much, not sure, gonna keep messin with things. thanks again for the comment!

Been a fuggin busy week. winterizing a house is a pain in the ass...as well as expensive..

anyways heres all i got for now. quick sketch of red robin... standin around..

Ludic: thanks dude! glad you dig it!

Jasper_: thanks man, tryin to stay as busy as i can with out burning myself out... thankfully the san fran trip will be a bit of a vacation for me... hopefully hahah.

DStraX: thanks dude, i struggle with keeping things from going muddy so it means a lot to hear you say that thanks again!

kidult: thanks man! out of all the robins this guy is my fav.

    Metal Fingers: thaanks man!

Teundeboer: haha, angry cat telling me to eat!? ugh, all out of frosted flakes too. thanks man

been busy lately, only got these sketches to show you. they are from the cgmw enviro 1 class taught by the awesome James Paick. as you guys know im not to fond of environments, i just dont like drawing them. so one way to try and get over that hurdle is to fucking draw environments!

I signed myself up for this course and im hopin ill improve my Bg skills come completion of the course. and so far im diggin it. James Paick really knows his shit, and i really like how, at least so far, its not bogged down by to much technical stuff. easy for me, a painting kind of digital painter and not so much of a technical painter, to easily wrap my head around what he was teaching.

long ways to go i think, content wise, these sketches dont have much to show for, but here i am, giving it a shot at least!

sketches are from week 1, 2 and 3. its currently week 3, so a bunch of weeks left. course ends some time in dec i think.
