TEEN CHALLENGE 75


The Rules:
1. No old work, sketches or WIP's, finished works made specificly for this weekly only!
2. Be sure to focus on the topic (and try to be creative).
3. Keep the size of your picture reasonable (about 1000 pix either direction) if you think it'll add to the composition, you can derivitate from this rule.
4. Color and B&W are both allowed.

Special Mascot Rules:
1. Image size: no specific size, but take a look at the other weeklies and have your image around that.
2. Lay-out: Is the artwork seperate from the banner? Is the piece a part of the banner, or is it the banner? Your pick!
3. The banner must have space for the rules (posted above) to fit. (and be able to add more)








The Topic: 'The Essence'

Now, for this round i was thinking a lot about what the topic could be. And i just couldn't think up of the essence of the teen challenge (since we try to cover a lot of different topics). But i couldn't find something that would really please me, and then i realised it. If i would've found something, it would be what i think it is, but anyone could have an entirely different idea.

So instead of you machine-ing an assignment I give you. I challenge you to think about what this is for you, what the essence of the teen challenge is, and uleash all your creativity on it.

Two ideas, still sketching them out on paper a bit, basically focusing on improvement over the course of the piece, so at the feet the figure (whatever that turns out to be) is really rough and sketchy, then you have redlines and rough coloring and at the head/shoulders it's a finished thing.

And a beautifully rendered, epicly detailed, fully visualized (oh yes) sketch of a novelty banner format. Oh, the glory of this must sear your eyes.

Just throwing an idea out there, but someone better at that sort of thing than me (wouldn't exactly be hard there) might like it? Or not. Facebook style layout. Winning Design is the "profile picture" on the right, has the name of the challenge "The Essence" above it like a name, to the right the other winning designs are all in thumbnails on a sort of "friendlist" block. Instead of facebook.com, it is of course Concept Art Teen Challenge at the top. Maybe the info blurb could be on top of the block on a sort of wall-post style thing.

Anyway, back to drawing!

I've never had a clear grasp of the meaning of essence, I've heard it used so many times, so many ways, that there could be endless possibilities to what i draw trying to clearly image it.
though, i went ahead and associated it with the core, so i'm assuming heart?
I wasn't really sure if it was supposed to be specific, so please correct me. ):

Meh guys, this is kinda dissapointing. I gave you guys an ENTIRE month, and with only 2 days left there is 1 finished entry and 2 WIP's.

Perhaps people forgot about it. Or they aren't posting their final until the deadline. I've been working on mine, I'll get it in before Friday. But I guess it's also expected of the holiday season. Maybe wait it out until the deadline? And if there's still very few entries, make a Lounge post and extend it a week?

I doubt I will have mine in in time as I am traveling and have no scanner access, but if I do it'll be here. It's been a busy month, I won't lie, but I'm impressed with what has been shown so far, particularly Pokepetter's. Ace color scheme.

I get home on the 31st, so depending on when in the day you'll be counting as the endpoint for submissions, it'll be in.

Playing around with the idea of a the deadliest race, since this is a field where only the tough survive. I need to do some more sketches but this is what I have started.

Still need to integrate the layout for the rules also...

dunno what exactly is going on as far as banner-ing it goes... will see when someone is a victor!

if it needs explanation: i translated the essence to more the origins in the feel of the Teen Challenge
so it's a teenage Leonardo da Vinci, in his early years of being the first famous concept artist in history xD
my first idea was to make the feel of a prodigy, someone young and brilliant, but i couldn't figure out what they would be working on... so the flying contraption simply realized itself and then the then the style filled in the rest

Zelda Geek: It looks as a good charecter, interesting grab on halo modifications, paint brush feels a little out of place to me...would have been cool to see the gun become a paint gun, or something along those lines. In terms of touch up, I would just finish the glow in the back and place the final touches!

Jerik: pretty nice piece, I'm interested to see how convert it into a banner. Congrats on pushing your concept!

LightMode108: Sorry for the late critique! I just wanted to say that it looks like a very solid idea! You have a good composition and the lighting on the person is good. I still think the book should be darker, there should be almost no light hitting that book...since it's pages are the source of light.
Overall solid work!

Pokepetter: Good job with the open composition! Everything is well placed, and it looks ready to hang (well placed) as the Banner Bravo!
