ROUND #181:: Cú ChulainnDESCRIPTION
Cú Chulainn is an Irish hero from Celtic/Gaelic culture. He also appears in Scottish and Manx storytelling. He was a knight of the 1st century and often compared to Achilles in Greek Mythology. When enraged he would become a ‘bezerker’ as in Viking culture. He was slain in a fight and like El Cid in later history, was propped up in an heroic pose, spear in hand to strike fear into his enemies even after death, and it was only when a raven landed on his shoulder that his demise was revealed.
He was seen as an Irish hero, riding a chariot, and defending Ulster against usurpers including Queen Medb of Connaught and even appeared to Saint Patrick as a ghost.
Cú Chulainn‘s appearance is open to interpretation, but he is described as clean shaven, young ( he died at 27 ), and some tales tell he had seven fingers on each hand and seven toes on each foot. And seven pupils in each eye. There is much description of him on his Wikipedia page, as there is of his life. There should be plenty of inspiration there in his adventures for an interesting version of this mythological hero.
Remember, knights of the 1st century would have been nothing like middle-ages knights. Their appearance would have been more ‘Asterix the Gaul’ than traditionally styled Arthurian knights. So leather, furs and armour more suited to Romano-Britain and Europe.
Although not strictly a two parter, this ChOW will be followed up with a linked character next week.

How's the 2 parter going to work in regards to process and submission?
Can you also draw him in his berserker-mode (its description pretty is scary ) or is that something to tackle next week? :p
Next week didn't happen yet. Draw Cu Chulainn for crying out loud. Aaaaahhhhh!!!! Aaaaahhhh!!!!
ok so im aficially inspired, im gonna go with a design/illustration approach of the moment when Cú Chulainn is about to face cid
Hi Nebezial - Great sketch! Just to check, Cú Chulainn didn't fight El Cid, they were eleven hundred years apart. I was merely making the comparison to how their corpses were both used after death to intimidate their enemies. In fact El Cid died in his sleep.
hah, cool then i can do what i wanted to... him surrounded with an army of enemies XD
cu chulainn seemed to be cute guy - 7 pupils, 7 fingers and such the toes - lucky man))
Alas, CHOW, thou hast screwed me!!! Cu Culainn on a week when I am going out of town? Still, I have to try and get this on this one... its Cu Culainn after all.
love mythology stuff!
I'm no good at drawing men though....I'll attempt this one I think and see where it gets me to.
Already curious about next weeks CHOW though ^____^
lets hope I don't have too much uni work to actually do this on weekly basis!
Cu Chulainn and the Fomorians.
One of the most interesting legends attached to Cú Chulainn is how he died strapped upright to a rock so he could still fight his enemies despite being wounded. There's a famous sculpture in Dublin General Post Office of it. I suggest that would make for a strong scene.
Think I'll participate in this one. I've got a basic design down, and am working on poses. trying to decide between, heroic, in combat, or strapped tot he rock LOL. Should be fun!

freaking awesome topic!
one of my favorite bands, Suidakra, just released a themed album called Crogacht which is all about Cú Chulainn and how he killed his only son. The lyrics are pretty inspirational so here's a link to them:
and here's an awesome pic of him riding into battle by the peerless J.C. Leyendecker
Here's my first draft... I'm trying to present him as a relatively muscular but yet half-grown teenager, guess the proportions are rightish, but any help is more than welcome. And yeah, I went for the full epic thing with rain pouring and stuff.
The yellow, funny-looking thing under his left foot is the hound, just in case you were wondering. And no, I don't like the spear yet either
Going for a more classical feel. If I could get some crits to see if the anatomy's workin' I'd appreciate it:
Anatomically you have some problem areas. The leg coming towards us (his right, our left) doesn't appear to be working too well. The foreshortening is really bothersome and the form of the knee feels misunderstood. He's got a "grandmother cellulite" feel rather than a "classical muscular" feel in that upper area of that leg.
The musculature on the upper upper swordless arm (his left, our right) doesn't seem to be working with the musculature of the lower arm. Try placing your arm in that position in a mirror (I used my bathroom mirror to make sure). The bicep can't possibly be visible on what we see as the bottom of that arm if we're not seeing the elbow, which in your image appears intended to be facing away from us (placed on the other, far side of the arm?). Also try and pay close attention to how that shoulder muscle is connecting to that pec- i'd almost argue to move the arm out a bit, and possibly lift it.
Also- start thinking about exactly what you want that hand to be doing (the one with the sword). If holding a sword in that position I feel we'd be getting a lot more foreshortening on the sword (not the hand).
There are also some weird things going on on the nose, in my opinion.
I'd think you might gain from either taking a snap shot of a friend (or yourself if you have a timer on a camera) just standing in that general position so that you can refer to it to try and correct some things, or you could start looking at some more classical poses and then take a reference... either way I would urge a reference in this one, especially since your musculature is going to be so important to get the "classical" feel you're going for.
Hope to start this too...
