Hey thanks, Lege1. I learned traditional illustration and am having a "challenging" time getting used to digital. I think I lose like 90% of the looseness from my sketch to final render because I simply have not figured out which brushes work well so I (lamely) primarily stick to the airbrush in PS.

And my demon-monkey-thing is looking too much like a flying monkey. I am working on some sketches now to further develop with the mixed anatomy I mentioned above and will post them soon.

EDIT: Sketch added. I don't think he is going to be termed "too human"... certainly less human than some past creatures that have won. But I guess time will tell.

    I just found this.
Turns out Merlin already has a familiar; Archimedes.

So let's say he died and we have to make his replacement (hah!).

haha yeah... Achimedes was also in T H White's novel too. Not sure if the disney movie was based off of that, but it's quite possible.

Who cares tho eh? Still a cool topic.

My initial take on some very interesting subject matter . I want the anatomy to be better this time around so I will have to sweat.
    Thoughts?

ActsOfBob lol that's cool man, thanks for showing!

I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of really cool images in this one. I am really excited about some of the things I have seen already.

I have been making good progress on mine, I am reaching that point that always kills me though... lighting and color.

will post later, making a video of my progress though.

EDIT: here's the link to my progress

doing the color for the fox (fur). when i'm done with that i'll add the half protruding wings, bone, 1/2 bird skull coming out of the top of the foxes head. and show some ribs on the very bottom (rough line drawing posted earlier.)C.O.W. #161 -- Merlin's Familliar -- Posting WIPs thread

    matj324 : nice fur ! but you remember what m.j. said :
"Your task is to design a new creature that would serve the purpose of being Merlin's familliar, his spiritual companion, in life. Really push to create a new creature design that fits the description. New creature. Not a lizard with a lions mane and devil horns. Look at real animals for anatomical reference, certainly... but create something NEW."
I think your design is way to foxy.

personally,i liked the frog better. imo it could have gone straight to the poll the way it is,all the information you need is in that picture, and it's just the right mix between real and fantasy.
    but oh well.

    Hai guise.

Just a sketch. Design needs work, I know.

    C.O.W. #161 -- Merlin's Familliar -- Posting WIPs thread

retter: looks good; you might try to push the values more to get a fuller range from lights to darks.

Wiggers: really nice! A bit too much black in the shadows, maybe. I would push the reflected lights, and perhaps also pay more attention the the temperature of the light source vs the shadows.

jspangler: like the design so far.

Carnifex: great sketches; I think the later design is a little too saturated in color, though; perhaps save the super-saturated colors for the focal area? Otherwise, it's a little bit blinding and it's hard to know what's most important visually.

Lege1; good anatomy; he's pretty huge. His lower jaw is maybe a little underdeveloped.

ActsOfBob: love the first design especially, but all of them are very good; great colors.

Arthur 'Two Sheds; great colors, great lighting. Looks like Archimedes.

mattj324: Looks a little too foxy atm, more like a study than a design.

JustSomeDude: I like the design, but I'm not sure how he's sitting in space. Is he floating? It's hard to tell atm.

yeah,it's just a "colour overlay" layer (or whatever you call it),which either makes really dull or really saturated colours. i'll have to balance it out later.

I loved Archimedes But, I might do some groundwork for this one as well, that would be three challenges this week :/

Retter: Nice head! The rest of the body could improve imor. It’s also a bit flat atm (the body).

Wiggers: I love Bosch too. A little extra colour wouldn’t hurt.

Carnifex: Interesting head. The rest of the body looks a little stiff so far. Perhaps vary placement of legs and arms… perhaps a small twist or turn of the head?

Jspangler: Nice imp-sketches. Why make an imp, may I ask? It’s not exactly a new creature…

ActsOfBlob: Good sketching, and good call to skip the frog. The new one has a lot more potential and life to it.

Jcpahl: That’s disgusting. I would never keep a familiar like that one.

Lege1: If you reduce the light on the dragon’s leg the head will come into focus.

Arthur TS: You have added a lot of bright and colour-full objects in your last update. They make the image a little chaotic, and steals attention from your owl. Keep the candle,
But let the owl be the next brightest place to look at.

I didn’t comment on everyone, because I had nothing to say. Generally I think there are many not especially new creatures here… so far.

If you can’t find a completely new body-shape, then change the details, colours, patterns and so on. Ears, fur, scales, tails, feet, hands, horns, nails, eyes etc can be changed around to make for a rather new experience.

I’m in too… these are just (not very successful) warm-up sketches. I’m not picking any of these.

I think it needed some sense of scale.

Added some more colour thanks cloister for pointing that out.
