    Chow 180:: The STEAMPUNK HAREM

    Chow 180:: The STEAMPUNK HAREM

    ROUND #180:: The STEAMPUNK HAREM

    DESCRIPTION

    They are pampered and preened for the Sultan and Sultana. Doused with pungent oils, washed with lavender and cinnamon scented perfumes, their skins perfect and their complexions refined and painted to reflect the whim of their master and mistress.

    They are treated with respect and adoring attention, but they are prisoners; birds in a gilded-cage. They are the concubines of the king and queen, the harem slaves of oriental fantasy. But the world these particular chattels inhabit is a Steampunk world.

    This week design a Steampunk harem boy or girl. Either gender, it’s up to you; and environment is also at your own discretion. This harem is fantasy, and we suggest looking at odalisques and Victorian Orientalist painting as inspiration, but keep in mind their costume and world they inhabit is Steampunk.

    If you’re not familiar with Steampunk, just type it into Google and browse the enormous amount of reference there is. Some reference for Orientalist art here:

    http://www.orientalist-art.org.uk/

    http://www.orientalist-art.org.uk/harem.html

    http://www.alloilpaint.com/orientalist/p1.htm

    Also remember this is a forum for all ages, so please bear that in mind in your design.

    Thank you.

    Holy crap what an awesome idea. Good opportunity to practice design, I should think.
    “It is enough that we set out to mold the motley stuff of life into some form of our own choosing; when we do, the performance is itself the wage.”
    -Learned Hand

    Sounds fun, though I wonder if anyone even realizes what 'steampunk' really is anymore.

    Indeed! It will be interesting to see if anyone takes a historical approach, as in taking the technology of the area and culture and giving it a 'steam' twist.

    I may have to drag myself from my self-imposed exile from the world in general to take part in this one... Pretty boys and steampunk? How delectably delightful!

    Just don't be too rough with the steam-powered concubines, you don't want to be scalded anywhere sensitive.

    Wonderful topic by the way!

    what a fun cross over... I think I kind of sort of know what Steampunk is... I'll give it a shot and please let me know if I'm out of line~~~

    Anyone feel that Clamp's Clover is really steampunk...kind of? here's an example. I know CA doesn't like anime, but just thought it'd be inspiring.

    Okay before you get too ahead of yourself I'm going to issue a warning. I haven't decided if your piece for last week's is off-topic enough to cut it yet, but it's currently on my list, especially since you only barely-heeded my warning about it.

    As for this particular topic. Orientalism is very different than Japanese Stuff. Oriental does *not* mean Asian. It has sometimes been used to refer to specific Asian cultures, but usually only for those countries that line up along the silk road, hence how China sometimes falls under 'oriental' but personally I feel like that's stretching it.

    Japan is off-brief. Sorry.

    Just warning you now, if you go that way, you're going to get cut.

    Chow is on it's 180'th round. There are tons of different topics covered and will be tons more. If you want to participate then you need to read the brief and stick to it. This isn't a 'find inspiration by what we say and then totally do your own thing' contest. This is a read the brief and do it to the best of your ability contest.

    Put in the homework.

    And for those of you having a hard time visualizing Steampunk... one my fav lists resides here:

    http://www.kaboodle.com/steamsociety and also
    http://www.kaboodle.com/jesseve/stea...unk-world.html

    If you go in through the two "Lists" available for the top link (I like the Jewelry list, myself)... you'll find other Lists to peruse on the side of the webpage. The second link is a compendium of some highly interesting modern-day items that could very easily be called victorian/steampunk/etc.

    Oh and... I'M IN!

    (Btw, Dae? If we wanted to include the Sultan or Sultana could we or will they be a future topic?)

    @ Daestwen - Not to be rude or arrogent, but once again, you never mentioned any specific races or cultures that can or cannot be used. How are we supposed to know what exactly to use when your vague about it. I mean last week I made a piece, but it wasnt human enough. This week, I try Japanese influence, but thats a culture not allowed, but yet nothing about using either isnt said. I will go with something else, maybe merging Persian and Egyptian, but please, its confusing when we dont know what we can or cannot use.

    Think of it this way: Your boss wants you to draw a "harem" you probably should stick closer to the Arabic / Turkish origin of the word. If you gave your boss a emperor's consort from another region you'd probably have to do it over.

    The term harem comes from many countries and cultures, yet always means the same thing. "Consort of women to serve and pleasure the chief/sultan/king/emperor" If you want ONLY certain cultures, let us know which ones! Thats all im saying.

    When using harem with Sultan and Sultana there isn't too much room to move it outside the region, imo. But, hey, your funeral.

    All im saying, is just say what you want. Do you want only humans? Say so. Do you only want one or two races? Dont try and word around it, be blunt. I have had many clients who say a short brief on what they want, and when I do what i think they said they want, they turn around and try to tell me something different. I tell them to go screw themselves, and that I dont have time to work on something that not even you think you want.

    And on another note, this is conceptart.org. I was led to believe that this site was about exploring your artistic abilities, tapping into the depths of your mind, taking the boring and making it awesome, and even advancing in your own skills, not just reading a quick and vague brief and doing that exact thing quickly.
